Presentation slides on OSS

Post by rhoenix »

I found this presentation linked off an article at Slashdot, and found it fascinating. The slides don't have the benefit of the speaker, unfortunately, but for the most part it's quite informative about OSS and business.

Indeed, I took a look at that stuff earlier in the day. OSS actually makes for an excellent business model, in my opinion, as in many cases, you can reap the full gross margins of packaged software distribution without paying for the development, while additionally garnering a secure revenue stream from maintenance and support contracts.

He's right about why Oracle Linux isn't doing so well, and why Novellindows Linux is also headed for disaster.

Which is unfortunate, since Novell does contribute a lot to desktop linux software (Mono, compiz, some gnome and KDE stuff)

Not to mention the fact that SLED is one of the best distros around. I love it. In fact, this morning, when chatting with a certain SD.net member, I likened Rome: Total War (which I recently bought after reading Wong's rave review) to it in terms of quality.

To which he replied (justifiably) that that was the nerdiest statement I ever made. Fair enough. I guess you know your way too into operating systems when you liken a Linux distro to R:TW.
