Let me run down what you see in this three minute video.

1. Time of Day effects(Shadows on the fly)
2. Soft Shadows(Real looking shadows)
3. Real time Light maps (Super accurate shadows)
4. Sunbeams (Pretty lights)
5.. Long range viewdistants (No****)
6. Parrellx Mapping (Gravel floor LOOKS like one)
7. 3D Ocean (Looks like Silent Hunter IV but better!)
8. A whole crap ton of character animation, leaning in inclines, good lipsyching, ect.
9. Two meh effects
10. Breakable buildings!!!11!! (Buildings made out of acutal pannels of wood and metal, meaning when the Tank runs the building town, it distingrates)
11. Breakable Vegetation (Remember Predator 1? With the Mini gun firing into the woods? Same idea, but even prettier)
12. Some physics and editor stuff (Editer looks idiot proof)
13. Component vechical damage(Shoot out tires, transmission etc, GTA stuff but better)
14. Next-Gen Physics system

Ok, the last part, the part 14, has to be viewed to be believed. It's... wow.

In short, I've found a game I need to upgrade my video card for. This is the demonstration video for the makers of Farcry's new engine and impressive just scratchs the surface. Some parts are kinda slow or meh, but overall the engine is impressive enough I would look forward to ANY game done with it. Even Barbie Horse Adventure IX.

Voodoo Extreme has a link to a pdf describing the engine (it's a sales for brochure for those interested in licensing the engine). Pretty cool stuff, and CryEngine 2 is probably the most impressive of the "next-gen" engines (id's "Mega-texture", Epic's UE3, etc.). Project Offset and Alan Wake will probably give this engine a run for the money, but they're still very far out (mid-2008 or later).

Honestly, given what we've seen in videos to date, I'd love to see the next Elder Scrolls game use this engine. Of course, I'm pretty sure Bethseda's dev team would turn what appears to be a beautifully optimized engine into bloatware.

And the nuke flat out pwns the nuke at the end of FEAR.[/url]

The sandbox demo blew me away. I've decided that I'm going to base all my hardware upgrades around that game, as I'd *really* like to be able to play the game and have it look that good. I can't afford 2 8800gtxs, but by the time Crysis rolls out I *hope hope hope* there will be something in the $300 range that can run Crysis well.

Unreal 3 in gears of war looks good, but Crysis... now that is something else.

I´d love to see realtime procedural maps in one of the next gen engines. Megatexture and everything is nice but it´s a whole lot of more work than simply combining a couple of regular 1024 textures with some procedural noise.

Maybe at some point, but Crytek's CEO is on record saying that the 360 and the PS3 don't have enough ass to run Crysis as is. They'd have to redesign the engine around each console. Last I heard they looking at what would be needed, but I don't think they've gone beyond that at this point, and it probably won't be a priority until have Crysis ships.

The thing I'm wondering is how good are the tools, the PDF looks nice, but the idea behind the Source editors also 'looked' nice. This might be enough to drag some people away from UE3, but unlikely.

Did you watch the Sandbox demo? It looks fairly easy to use, and I know a lot of modders like Far Cry's editor. While I haven't used either UE2's or Far Cry's editor, and definitely not the new versions, I'd say CE2's editor looks competitive.

On the scripting side, Crytek looks to have UE3 beat, but I'm not sure about the rest.

Also, I'm very doubtful about Far Crys goodness map editor, I don't recall that many user modded maps.

I'll be honest, that map editor/tool thing was pretty fantastic looking. It was like the warcraft/starcraft map maker, choose what kind of terrain to plop down and the program does all the work. It does all the lighting and shadows automagically too. The guy doing the demo said you could import from 3dsmax or some other program (I forget the name). It didn't sound terribly difficult.

My one big question is regarding vehicles. I know the Farcry had them and they worked okay, but it was basically just Battlefield style vehicles. I know in one of the demos they showed a vehicle losing a tire or something and skidding out of control. That was pretty sweet, but I hope vehicles are done well enough to have both ground and air (those clouds were pretty cool) in multiplayer.

Hopefully importing models will be fairly easy (and that is one of UE's strengths). Companies that license the engine probably won't that problem; they can just license what ever model making software Crytek uses, and use Crytek's import/export tools. I'm hoping that Crytek releases some plugins for the community to use for model imports/exports, or at leasts provides and ICD so the community can make their own.

But if Crytek forces modders to go through the hoops Bethseda has placed on its community (such as creating model importers from scratch, with no or little help), then that's going to chase some folks away.

Also, I'm very doubtful about Far Crys goodness map editor, I don't recall that many user modded maps.

Well, is that because of the editor itself or because of Far Cry's shitty multiplayer mod? From the comments I've seen from some modders, I'd bet its the latter.

Some of the other videos show a gunship with location damage and fairly realistic looking flight model, and it was pretty sweet. The thing I want to know is can players fly the gunship, and how difficult is it to control.

It's a wait and see, I think one of the better marketing moves Epic ever did was ship the exact same editor to modders and licensees, limiting really only the engine to license rather then free. If Crytek does the same, they might start building a following, and that creates engine licensees.
