Actually Shadows of the Empire states that Leia convinced the Rebellion to spend quite a bit of resources to get Solo back from Jabba. She got Rogue Squadron significantly attrited and she didn't even get Han back, and all they got was a lost ally (Rendar) and they killed Xizor (but who cares? that wasn't the Rebellion's problem). Frankly I didn't see how flying a squadron of X-Wings into orbit of Courscant was a GOOD idea, but hey.
They were lucky they didn't get completely destroyed, mostly because the TIE's that came in and started blasting Xizors fighters were ordered to ignore the X-Wings and blast Black Sun.
Of course in universe, its entirely possible that this whole escapade was exactly why the Rebellion decided to withhold any special forces assets or such from the Princess and Luke in their mission to attack Jabba.
