Sex Watches hit the market (RAR!)

This is a follow up to this thread that has been bouncing around my head for a bit. I put it in SLAM because of the implications this would have on society but if a mod thinks this is a bad place for this go ahead and move it.

Today, Shipments arrive to jewelry stores, malls and such across the developed world delivering a new product. They are basically some middle price Chrome and brass plated analogue watches with an extra gold button below the six from a new watch company. The stores accept them and put them on sale and display and as they are a new product put on sale. People start buying them just as any other watch, but soon people find out the secret of them, if the button is pushed the person transforms into a relatively attractive member of the opposite gender of that persons age. Transformees still retain your ethnicity, age, hair and eye color, nail length (hair falls out if a dude becomes a woman), height and sexual preference, but still turn into members of the opposite sex. The Transformation is quick (taking about three to five minutes and for a pseudoscientific justification on how it works it uses nanites) and painless and there are millions of said watches out there and most middle class people can buy one and more are being made for export.

What happens because of these watches?

I assume you mean that the hair on men's chests, backs, etc. that women generally don't have falls out, and not ALL their hair falls out?

BTW Zor, newest version of Firefox has a built-in spell checker. Not perfect, but it helps.

IMHO, this is somewhat different. The previous thread asked what you, individually, as the only person with such a device, would do with it. This newer thread asks what will happen when a helluva lot of them are put out and used. Macroscale, as opposed to personal scale.

Personally, I expect it would end up much the same way things are now. Fundies and conservatives would condemn it as unnatural and against the Will of God, those freaky folk out on the fringe would embrace it, and LGBT would be expanded to Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transsexual/Watch-User. Life would go on, much the same as it is now.

Quick question: When you say that "Transformees still retain your [...] sexual preference", do you mean hetero-/homo-sexual, or do you mean likes guys/girls? Cause, it could get interesting otherwise.

Ghetto Edit: Almost forgot; in the previous thread, people suggested using the watches to provide near-instant and painless sex-changes for those who need them, and these numbers of watches will make it possible.

Think about it. A watch like that is a criminal's wet dream. In one stroke, the company just made it necessary to redo a significant portion of the criminal investigation system and procedures.

(See, discussions like this are one reason I much prefer "andro-" and "gynosexual" to homo or hetero. But I digress.)

Personally speaking, I'd get one of these watches as soon as I could, and use if as often as possible. On a more global scale...religious folk would probably hate them.

The government would have to hold some very serious debate about exactly what this means for gender - what does it do to marriage, or even just personal records, if you can easily change from the gender you were born into?

For me, personally, that watch would give me the heebie-jeebies. First, you would never find me buying one; I'm comfortable with the hardware I was born with. Second, there would always be doubt as to the gender of the person you're talking to; "Ah, excuse me, but are you really a guy or a girl?" Third, think what it would do to society, making a total shambles of gender based roles (not that that would always be bad thing). Fourth, if there were a military draft (which we do not have, hence my prefacing this sentence with "if") our female population would see an explosion of mega proportions; "Where did all the men go?" And then there would be those women who would become men in order to get into the draft or the armed services. Fifth, there's PeZook's erudite insight: just imagine what the criminals would do with it. And sixth, the list goes on and on.

So, the concise description of what would happen with gender-changing watches: societal chaos.

Also related to the crime thing, is that you may end up with other types of crime, because of the watch, and its potential.

One kind of crime that might start happening are people who slap the watches onto someone, hit the transform button and then take it off and leave the person as the other gender. Or at least there would be e-mail's that get forwarded around with anecdotal evidence about people who had that happen to, but without any actual proof.

Some places, like gyms and such, would require that all wristwatches be removed before they would allow you inside. Especially WRT the showers and changing areas. There might be some overblown fear from the watches that a potential rapist would use one to turn into a female, go into a women's changing area, and then turn back into a male once he had managed to get one of the women alone.

And then he turns into a woman. And how do you prove it was him who comitted the crime? How do you even find him, seeing as nobody saw his male form, just the female leaving?

It leads to some interesting questions on how the law could deal with things like these.

Or how about just rapes them AS a woman. Imagne how this would also effect anti-gay groups...

Yeah, but it was "You get a sex watch", not "Everyone who wants one can have it". And frankly, this thread is much more interesting. The first one was basically an opportunity to share a childhood fantasy with other posters.
