Alliance/New Republic Wealth Redistribution?

Post by Warsie »

One of the fears the Imperial Rich had was that the Rebels would dispossess them of their wealth. Did this happen, was it allowed to happen at all (circumstances) or did the Imperial Rich flee with their possessions and the NR never had the change to re-distribute wealth?

If wealth was re-distributed, did the NR use it to fund the war, treat it as regular money, use it for reparations to worlds the Empire hurt (like Kriselist, which was bombarded from orbit mercilessly) and for humanitarian gestures? What happened. :?:

I'm not entirely positive, but from what I gather from most EU sources is that life for the average human was little different under the New Republic as under the Empire, so I'm tempted to say that this did NOT happen.

IIRC, Planet of Twilight mentions, that there was a lot of chaos and plundering when the NR conquered Coruscant, but AFAIK there is little else mentioned. I, Jedi states that a lot of NR-dignataries were surprised when the Coruscanti/humano-centric upper-class shared their wealth with the non-humans after the DE-episode. However I wouldn't be surprised, if there was little left to distribute by the rebels when they reached most locations. The Empire and its break-away warlords would have filled their pockets first.
The optimist thinks, that we live in the best of all possible worlds and the pessimist is afraid, that this is true.

Can I just ask where the idea of the Rebels as wealth re-distributors comes from? I haven't come across it in my reading of the EU.

Furthermore wouldn't the hints put forward of Imperial nationalisations, particularly of war industries like the shipyards put the Empire at odds with the financial elites, I know that Kuat of Kuat (what a stupid name!) was strongly critical of the Imperial governments attempts to muscle in on the Kuat shipyards and took drastic measure to stop any nationalisation.

A lot of the NR leadership were either Old Republic elites like Mon Mothma and Leia, or ex Separatists, neither of who would particularly care for giving away their money, I imagine. Principles stop at the checkbook.
Turns out that a five way cross over between It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the Ali G Show, Fargo, Idiocracy and Veep is a lot less funny when you're actually living in it.

Well in the X-Wing books during the capture of Coruscant Horn mentions seeing shuttles fleeing, fearing that the rebels would steal their wealth.

It could be that the Imperials were fearing reprisals from the NR for supporting the Empire, including the confiscation of property. Afterall they're at war and it's not unknown for one side to penalize the supporters of the other side.

The New Republic also banned the use of Imperial Credits on Republic "reconqured" worlds. I believe it's in Isards Revenge when the Rogues capture and then relese the spy to Coruscant after she forced them to give her Imperial Credits and she was arrested.

Solo Command, actually. One of Allston's decent X-Wing books.

Obviously the NR would if just as a PR move. Imagine, you, Rebel, capture Imperial Planet A and the local rebels demand finacial help to build the Planetary Government. The NR, big on image, would obviously help. Where to get the Wealth the Loyal Imperial Citizens.
