In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, players will compete in events that take place in environments based on the official venues of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Using a supporting cast of characters from the amazing worlds of both Mario and Sonic, gamers will be able to compete as or against a range of lovable personalities including Mario, Sonic, Luigi, Knuckles, Yoshi, Tails and more. Innovative usage of the Wii and DS control systems to maneuver a favorite character will allow players to race the likes of Mario and Sonic down the 100m track, engage in exhilarating rallies in table tennis and churn water in a swimming heat, all while competing for the much sought after gold medal.
Whose bright idea was it to place it in the Olympics???
Oh well, I know I'm buying it. Hope this means Sonic will be in Smash Bros. And hope it's online.
This reeks of an early April Fool's Day joke to me. On the off chance that it's not, though, I'll second hoping that it means Sonic will be in Smash Bros.
"I want to mow down a bunch of motherfuckers with absurdly large weapons and relative impunity - preferably in and around a skyscraper. Then I want to fight a grim battle against the unlikely duo of the Terminator and Robocop. The last level should involve (but not be limited to) multiple robo-Hitlers and a gorillasaurus rex."--Uraniun235 on his ideal FPS game
"The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant compared to the power of the Force."--Darth Vader
It's on Nintendo and Sega's press sites. I have an email in my inbox straight from my friends at Sega PR, listing who I should contact at both Nintendo or Sega for questions from either company and including the press release.
So if it's April Fools, it is an extremely well planned joint April Fools joke between both companies who are sending out press releases to all their press contacts...
I doubt it.
(Sega has a sense of humor, too. The email said, "Pigs have flown…Hell has frozen over…and Steven Seagal has won the Academy Award!!!" as a preface.)

I think my sense of reality has just disapeared...
However if this means Sonic is in Smash Bros. awesome.
Marcus Aurelius: ...the Swedish S-tank; the exception is made mostly because the Swedes insisted really hard that it is a tank rather than a tank destroyer or assault gun Ilya Muromets: And now I have this image of a massive, stern-looking Swede staring down a bunch of military nerds. "It's a tank." "Uh, yes Sir. Please don't hurt us."

Where else would you put it? An olympic game makes more sense than trying to mix universes somehow. That would be just... ugly. My only question is how can Mario hope to win the 200m dash and Sonic the high jump?
Also, new Smash Bros + Sonic = beating my brother with a stick until he agrees to go 50/50 for a Wii.

I'd prefer something like Simon Belmont, Alucard or The Count making an appearence in Smash like they did in that wierdass game that had, like, Richter Belmont versus Optimus Prime and such. With the breach of Konami into Nintendoland, it'd be excellent to get some more. The addition of Snake, however, will help swallow the bitter pill that is Sonic.
The game seems to be online. Matt at IGN continues to refer to it as such, and IGN owns GameSpy which provides Nintendo's online network.
I've been sitting on the announcement for Mario & Sonic at the Olympics for awhile. It's one of those games I mentioned a few weeks ago. (There are still much bigger ones, so don't worry.) But I don't want to downplay the significance of this project and I can't, for the life of me, understand why some people on the message boards have already ripped it apart.
The game is being developed by SEGA of Japan, which has me a little worried, I freely admit. The company hasn't exactly dazzled me with its efforts in recent times. That being true, Nintendo is also directly involved and, more specifically, Miyamoto is on the job. I think Nintendo realizes how important this title could be for Wii and doesn't want it mucked up. Therefore, I'm confident that Miyamoto and crew will be ever watchful of SEGA's developments.
think some of you were expecting a Mario and Sonic platformer of some sort, but really, this title makes much more sense to me. It is, when you break it down, Wii Sports + Olympics + Mario + Sonic + online. What the hell is not to like about that? This game could very well be the next biggest thing since Wii Sports. Do not downplay its existence. If it is done right, it could be one of Wii's best-sellers of the year.
Some gamers also seem to have missed out on the significance of this announcement. Nintendo and SEGA are actively working together on a cross-license product. Do you honestly believe that Sonic won't be in Super Smash Bros. Brawl at this point? Of course he will! It would be an injustice if the mascot wasn't.
