I think we need to start demanding real names, years of graduation, and credentials for all of the apparently well-qualified climatologists like "wishful" who are suddenly appearing on the Internet and refuting the work of thousands of qualified climatologists. It must take a lot of education for someone to be so qualified that he can copy and paste Republican "talking points" and pretend that it makes him an expert.
I especially like the part where he claims that scientists have no answer for his arguments. That's how you can tell he's never bothered reading any of the scientific literature himself, and is only repeating Republican "talking points".
Tell me, Mr. Scientific Genius "wishful", if the CO2 greenhouse effect is a fraud, how do you explain the fact that the underlying mechanism has been verified in the laboratory? And do you understand that the greenhouse effect already warms the Earth so much that it would be a frozen iceball if not for this effect, so only a small variation in its total effect would be more than enough to create significant global warming? That's why it's stupid and ignorant to say that human CO2 production doesn't matter if it appears to be only a small proportion of the overall greenhouse effect.

A few weeks back I started privately passing around a link to an article about the US urging scientists to consider blocking out the sun. Possible solutions included flooding the atmosphere with reflective dust and launching giant mirrors into orbit. Building giant space mirrors is obviously easier than cutting down on emissions. His Divine Shadow wrote:So can we detonate a few volcanoes artificially? Or is it not technically feasible / short term solution only?
But let it get a bit warmer before trying. I like the milder weather up here in Finland

On the contrary, the antiGW types ALWAYS bring it up, along with the medieval warm period and the Sun and the rest of it.wishful wrote:What you WON'T see in the global warming controversy is that CO2 represents about 10 percent of the warming.
Then it has no impact on human-caused global warming, does it? It also says nothing of how much of the recent trends it is influencing, does it? It's just saying "hey, we contribute a small amount relative to this stuff we can't control, therefore that small amount can't have a significant influence on the climate," which is a total nonsequitur. The major greenhouse gas is water vapor which accounts for 30 percent of the warming. Scientists uniformly agree that humans can't control water vapor levels in the air.
Which only proves that carbon in the atmosphere didn't start the warming trends, not that it doesn't contribute to it.You also have to dig pretty deep into the research papers to discover that CO2 levels LAG temperature by 800 years over the last 100,000 years.
UN NWO AM I RITE???Global warming is an artificial crisis designed to garner money for scientists and publicity and votes for politicians.

Are people still buying this mass socialist conspiracy theory backed by scientists wanting more money for phoney research bullshit? I thought Moon landing deniers and Cretinists were dumb, but this is actually dangerous to society. You wouldn't hesitate to blow these fools out of the water if they advocated adding arsenic to the water supply, yet here they are, saying there's nothing wrong at all with poisoning our atmosphere to the point of irreversible global climatological change.

let's see it built reefs that saved the world from too much overfishing, it released enough sulfer into the atmosphere to cool down the earth a bit, and killed a good deal of the human population (between direct effects of the war, and reduction of food and medicine) that is still threatening the planetary eco-system.

let's face it the actuall conspiracy on global climate change, the poisoning of the atophere being observed back in the early industirial age when the phrase "acid rain" was coined around the coal burning towns in England, is those industries, dependant on cheap fuel for their livelyhood. Which is just about every industry actually, from manufacturing, to service, to medical, even and especially farming. While electrical motors have existed for over a hundred years, and nuclear technology has existed for quite some time. No one is working on them, because they are "too expensive". We'll now the public good demands that the bottom line pony up for some social responsibility, and every industry in the western world that has so far coasted on these luxuries, is very scared.

I wonder if wishful even realizes how ironic it is for the anti-GW people to accuse the scientists of making claims just to get more money when not having to pay to reduce polution is the #1 reasons why the GOP (which is nothing more than the mouth piece of corporate America) oppose GW so much in the first place.

I love the way he totally ignores the point I made earlier in this thread to Falcon, about how climatologists don't mysteriously get paid when energy companies build new power plants.Darth Servo wrote:This is all we need to show that wishful is an insane conspiracy nut.wishful wrote:Global warming is an artificial crisis designed to garner money for scientists and publicity and votes for politicians.
OK, so those last three words are redundant.
How anyone can look at the vast wealth in the energy industry and its paid shills and conclude that the big money is behind global warming "conspiracists" is beyond me. Only an idiot could conclude such a thing. Even the anti-GW people themselves admit there is huge economic incentive in their position, by saying that it would demolish the economy to do what the GW people say. This is literally like someone complaining that big mean David is bullying little ol' Goliath. All David had was the sling, and all scientists have is professionalism and knowledge. The money is all in the hands of the anti-GW brigade.

Here's an interesting letter taken from the 24-30 March edition of the Radio Times, criticising the dubious nature of The Great Global Warming Swindle:
Dear Radio Times
The Great Global Warming Swindle was the most irresponsible "science" programme I've ever seen. Made by Martin Durkin, whose 1997 anti-enviromentalism series Against Nature (C4) was censured by the ITC [a forerunner of Ofcom] for "distorting" contributors' views, The Great Global Warming Swindle was a compendium of innuendo, bias and inaccuracy.
Where to start? It overstated the brief cooling between 1940 and 1970, ignoring the likely cause of this blip (sulphate aerosols). It made much of natural C02 release, ignoring the natural absorption that balances them (a balance we're disturbing) and claiming volcanos produce more CO2 than human activities (they produce 150 times less). The sections on tropospheric tempratures and solar radiation/cosmic rays were based on discredited data; it grotesquely simplified CO2 "lagging". I could go on.
An overwhelming majority of scientists think man-made CO2 is causing climate change on a disasterous scale. Watching this superficially convincing film, non-experts might think otherwise, relying on Channel 4's responsibility to be rigorous and fair. This programme was neither.

I just have a little comment, maybe to raise a few eyebrows, and something to think about.
We are draining the earth of it's oil, at an alarming rate. When oil is removed from the earth, what takes it's place? Water, to fill the gaps, or air? What has greater insulating properties, oil, water, or air?
Thank you, just my peabrained scientific 2 cents worth!

Erm, well, actually, yes. Using the well-known correlations we see between carbon emissions and GDP, and extrapolating backward, reducing emissions enough to reduce temperatures by 1 degree C will cost somewhere between 5 and 500 trillion US dollars. For $20 trillion, you could launch around 5,000,000 metric tons of mirrors into space, even using current launch technologies and ignoring the effects of mass production. Assuming a thickness of 50 micrometers for the mirrors, that's 100,000 km^2 of surface area, enough to block out ~0.1% of sunlight from reaching the Earth, which is enough radiative forcing to decrease temperatures by 1 C. (Note that this is all estimation and just an exercise to show how ridiculous both plans are).Building giant space mirrors is obviously easier than cutting down on emissions.
Please read at least some introductory climatology stuff before making comments like this; this paragraph is so confused I hardly know where to start. Suffice it to say that underground liquids are not a major determining factor of climate. We are draining the earth of it's oil, at an alarming rate. When oil is removed from the earth, what takes it's place? Water, to fill the gaps, or air? What has greater insulating properties, oil, water, or air?

Water and various gases. Oil in the ground is basically like Coke, let the oil out and the natural gas bubbles in the oil will expand and fill some of the pores. Water, either in the form of aquifers or water that's pumped down into the ground helps to pressurize the oil and push it out, it too displaces the oil. CO2, N2, and other gases may also be pumped down into the reservoir to scavenge the oil. Putting CO2 down into the reservoir may have a very minor effect on global warming since it keeps the gas out of the atmosphere.vargo wrote:We are draining the earth of it's oil, at an alarming rate. Thanks Aerius.... for clearing that up for me .... I guess I was trying to say, from a different point of view............the earth core is molten hot lava. Remove the earth's insulation (oil) then the earth warms from below. It was just an peabrained Un-scientific 2 cents worth. Thanksaerius wrote:Water and various gases. It's perhaps not surprising that Channel 4 is acting in a irresponsible manner - look at the "Dr." Gillian McKeith fiasco, she was quackery combined with common sense about diets and made it more scientifically convincing that it actually was. It seemed like The Great Global Warming Swindle was a mixture of truths taken out of context then combined with intentional distortions.
