Edited (in bold) to reflect how the UN really functions. :banghead:
I'd be interested to see your justification for this statement. Oh, and before you scream "Israel" at the top of your voice, the terms are not synonymous.

I was only being partially serious, but since you asked..... I'm sorry, but your statement is patently untrue. The vast majority of anti-Israel rhetoric is people hiding behind the term "anti-Israel", to avoid the term "anti-Semitic". There are certainly a number of valid criticisms of Israel, but as I said, the majority are simply weakly hidden anti-Semitism.

I don't know any that specifically address Judaism off the top of my head. I suppose I could go read through them all, but unless someone really cares, I'm not particularly motivated to do that. See my previous post for a quick explanation.

Yeah, but you said that's "how the UN really functions." If most of the issues people worldwide have with israel were based on antisemitism, that would have no impact on the assertion "that's how the UN really functions," so you're supposed to be able to show that the UN is antisemitic to back that up, not point at people that have nothing to do with the UN's behaviour.

Oh, I see. Sorry about that, I just misread what you were saying. As for the UN, I was mostly being sarcastic. They have some pretty irritating anti-Israel resolutions, but nothing (that I can think of) dealing directly with Judaism. So, mostly meant to be a joke.

On Monday, the pope said he was "deeply sorry" for sparking worldwide Muslim anger with a speech he made last week in which he quoted an obscure medieval text that criticised some teachings of the Prophet Mohammed as "evil and inhuman".

The speech sparked several days of protests in Muslim countries against the leader of the world's 1.1 billion Roman Catholics.
What's really ironic is that with this anti-defamation proposal, Muslims couldn't protest the Pope.

It'll give lameassed pro censorship muslims another talking point. That's about it. Maybe now they'll feel extra righteous when they burn down an embassy and behead the people that work there.

I suggest you become a highly intolerant and violent religion first, then maybe you'll get appeasement.

Before everyone gets on their high horse (I suppose that's too late), how is this different from, say, Germany's longstanding anti-blasphemy law which was used in 1994 to ban a Catholic-bashing play? Or the anti-blasphemy laws in Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, and Poland? Hell, even Norway and Denmark have such laws, although an attempt to use them against the creators of the famous Mohammed cartoon failed because the judge ruled that freedom of expression was more important.

Many US states retain anti-blasphemy laws on the books as well, although it is unlikely that they could ever be enforced due to the First Amendment (unless the Republicans stay in power for a very long time).

I just think this is a weak justification to get all high and mighty about our superiority to Islam when the guy who made the chocolate Jesus has been receiving death threats. You're better off looking at domestic practices in Islamic theocracies than crowing about this.

Britain has such a law too, thankfully it's not used anymore, seen as archaic and the like, so stuff like Jerry Springer the Opera is unimpeded. I recall the muslims tried to get it changed so islam would be protected under it like christianity was, but that motion was shot down due to the law not really being applicable anymore. I think the ultimate lameness is that while our law is a leftover and to my knowledge, not really prosecutable anymore, the UN is inventing new laws to the same effect in the present, and it's something that seems to run contrary to the "universal human right to freedom of speech and religion" article that covered stuff like this.

This site has the document in several languages (not English, though), in case you feel like reading the original. It's not very long, and it's pretty straightforward language, so if you don't happen to be literate in any of the available languages a translating program should handle it without too much difficulty.

It's the first document on the page (A/HRC/4/L.12).

Blair did try to bring in a "Religious hatred" law which is much the same thing in reality. Fortunately the HoL kicked it out. Why on Earth do we need an elected second chamber - we'll just fill that up with the sort of worthless trolls we have in the Commons.
