Miami Forcing Some Sex Offenders into Homelessness

Post by raptor3x »

On one hand, they're sex offenders.

On the other hand a. there are some really stupid crimes that can earn you the title of sex offender b. these people are still humans c. what a great way to force people to violate their parole.

Here
CNN wrote: With nowhere to put these men, the Department of Corrections moved them under the Julia Tuttle Causeway. With the roar of cars passing overhead, convicted sex offender Kevin Morales sleeps in a chair to keep the rats off him.

"The rodents come up next to you, you could be sleeping the whole night and they could be nibbling on you," he said.

Morales has been homeless and living under the causeway for about three weeks. He works, has a car and had a rented apartment but was forced to move after the Department of Corrections said a swimming pool in his building put him too close to children.

The article makes it clear that:
Five men -- all registered sex offenders convicted of abusing children
That doesn't exactly rise my sympathies.

Fuck, there must be an old military base that has barracks that they could house them in. Practcally every city has an old armory or abandoned military facility.

And the fucking guy can't go live outside the city in a farmhouse, where he would easily meet the distance requirements to other children?

Gee, what a great way to ensure that they have no incentive what so ever of receeding back into their old ways...

If anything, I think this will ultimately lead to a number of them disappearing and resuming their old ways.

As the netscape link mentions, we're a really retarded species when it comes to this area... (Although, that link takes place in Utah...) Meh, I hope that rock actually does hit the earth... I want to be fairly sure that this species is gone after I die...

Or how about one of those adult housing communities?

I'd be more scared of having them homeless, myself.

And in the very story linked in the OP the crime a 13-year old girl was charged with was having sex with a child under 14.

Part of the rule of law is that it the laws applies equally and fairly to all. This is to prevent arbitrary exertion of power. However this is ridiculous and must be remedied immediately

b. these people are still humans
They are people who are a harm to society. I am more concerned that they will be more difficult to track and are set loose

Having a law apply equally and fairly to all is one thing, but it's another when the law produces such ridiculous consequences because it was put together haphazardly.

I forget who said it, but I want to say Kennedy, but you can't look at the effects of a law or regulation if it is administered well, you have to look at the consequences if it is administered poorly.

I too would be a little bit concerned about having a group of sex offenders living literally on the street in or near my community. Doubly so if I had kids. Apologists might like to talk about them "having paid their debt to society," but I would counter that as a general rule of thumb, people who've been in jail before, will be there again. A lot of times, its for the same damned thing too.

And that's but one more reason why I wouldn't want them "living on the street."

With the shit some of the communities in FL are coming up with, I wouldn't be surprised. County and city governments have been coming up with shit that makes it impossible for offenders to live within them. One city in central Florida made it a crime for offenders to live within a certain distance of school bus stops that conviently covered the entire city. I can understand the desire to do shit like that, but you're literallyn just pushing them right into someone elses town.

That's exactly what these laws are about: making it someone else's problem. It's no different than rounding up homeless people and dumping them in a less prosperous section of town, or even the next town over. They're out, problem solved.

Come to think of it, isn't this what they did to the criminals in the middle ages that didn't get hanged? You'd banish them from the city/town, and they'd go along their merry way and show up at the next one down the road?

How does it go? The more things change, the more they stay the same?

Pretty much. I can completely understand the desire for these people to be kept away from where children might possibly go to, but frankly it's just not feesable if you're going to release them from prison. From everything I've read, stability can help these douchebags not reoffend, so effectively putting them out on the street and forcing them to constantly move just increases the odds that they will harm children again. I don;t have a problem with registeries (for those classified as predators, not some guy that got drunk and was pissing in an alley when a carload of kids happened to drive by) and restrictions on where they can live, but unless society is prepared to incarcerate these people for life then there has to be some give.

Yeah, urinating in 'public' is a sex offense.

Hell, I've heard its a tactic the Cali PDs uses against homeless in their cities. Follow the guy around, tell stores to not let him use the bath room, and when he finally breaks down and uses an alley, they accoust him and take him to the city limit and tell him not to come back.
