Players take command of the German Panzer Elite as they struggle against the might of Operation Market Garden, or lead the British 2nd Army in the vicious battle for Caen, France. The standalone title features two unique armies with full length campaigns, new multiplayer modes, Microsoft DirectX(R) 10 support, mission persistence, improved vehicle and soldier AI, enhanced physics, and a dynamic weather system. Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts is fully compatible with Company of Heroes, allowing players to wage war with four unique armies.

While any CoH expansion is cause for great jubilation, I am profoundly dissapointed that it is not on the Russian front. How much more of a no brainer can it be? The Japanese I can live without easily enough, but the Russians offer the best option for diversity. You know you want to spam conscripts where every other guy has a rifle. :D I like playing as Germany but would much rather have an entirely original faction added. Works for lazy developers as well, just add new maps and Russians to fight the existing Germans.

Mmm, it makes sense. Adding those other sides would require tons of new artwork for landscapes and such. But what kind of side is German Panzer Elites?

This is what really excites me. Mission persistence, in multiplayer? Does that mean we'll get to play mini-campaigns? That would be amazing...

Eh? It's usually bloody Americans and Germans, Thankyouverymuch :P I might actually get the game now, what with a somewhat growing Mod community and this, it should quite a good buy.

Gut feel is that we're going to get style over substance. A lot of flash that looks great, but once into gameplay, nothing really new.

Though I do look forward to hearing the brits bitch and swear like the yanks and jerries :)

Seeing your thread title made my heart leap up.

The Ostfront? Island-hopping? I might finally buy this!

Then your body of text crushed my dreams.

I maintain that CoH would have been superior if it had forced you to manage your manpower and heavy metal in a manner similar to Mechcommander.

At least they put in the British, but how do you not do the eastern front? Thats a damn shame especially in the post Blitzkrieg series era.

Some kind of unit and situational persistence between missions would really benefit almost every RTS type game. It would be a good way to take resource management off the board and still make it interesting and vital to gameplay as well.

I notice a distinct lack of games about the Polish 1939 campaign, the Finnish Winter War and the Italian Front. Extremely interesting theaters, but precious few games ever touch on them. Such a shame...

I, personally, am pretty damn bored of seeing the same sides over and over again.

I just checked out their site and it seems they will have all the theatres I missed. Jubilations!

Bah, some Poles on horses fighting tanks? Color me uninterested!*

*Yeah yeah, I know that they were more like Dragoons or recon rather than Cavalry. Just messing with ya.

We're talking the first Blitzkrieg - the testing of German strategy and tactics for the first time since versailles. Acts of heroism worthy of any other war theathre to come, the last cavalry charge of the war (no, not against tanks :P), heavy use of armored trains, nasty city fighting, a small garrison holding out for 7 days with nothing but earthworks and little brick buildings against a battleship, dive bombers and a heavily armed batallion
with armor. Evolution of infantry tactics on both sides. A desperate struggle for survival against ovewhelming odds (a theme that makes any story :) ) Little things like these.

Also, they never fought German armor mounted. Just making sure you don't have the brainbug ;)

I think the reason we are getting the British instead of the Russians or Japanese is that both those sides would require entirely new terrain sets and completely new maps to be played on; by contrast the British (and new German) side will both be compatible with existing maps and terrain.

Well, it happened once, but that was when the cavalry routed German infantry and then got ambushed by panzers. They never deliberately fought armor from horseback.

Yeah. There were two camouflaged halftracks there who supported their infantry with machine-gun fire, and so the cavalrymen retreated. No charge with swords against tanks - Polish cavalry had Bofors anti-armor guns and AT rifles for that :)
