PS3 breaks sales records

Post by Ace Pace »

So no one claims we're biased towards any console..

PS3 breaks UK console records
Chart Track says approximately 165,000 PlayStation 3s were sold in console's first two days on market in UK, second-best regional debut only to PSP.

UK gamers apparently didn't hold a grudge after Sony delayed the launch of the PlayStation 3 in Europe for three months. The console went on sale in the UK this past weekend, and the first round of sales numbers are in.

According to industry watcher Chart Track, the PS3 became the fastest-selling home console (does not include portables) in UK history, with almost 165,000 moved in its first two days on sale.

The PS3 was still behind a portable in the all-time gaming platform ranks, but it's doubtful that Sony will mind. The PlayStation Portable holds the record for fastest-selling gaming console with approximately 185,000 sold in its first two days on sale. The previous record holder for home consoles was the Wii, which sold more than 50,000 units in its first 12 hours, and was widely reported to have sold approximately 105,000 units in its opening weekend.

The PS3 helped two Sony software titles take the top spots on the UK's all-formats chart last week, with Resistance: Fall of Man and Motorstorm falling in slots one and two, respectively. Overall, six of the top 10 all-formats games were PS3 titles.

Translation: Europe dosn't hate the PS3 that much. Or, that it's proving itself as the biggest gaming market there is. Or both.

It's worth noting that no other home console has launched with as much stock as Sony had for the PS3 launch.

When I was in Game today, Wiis were still selling out within hours of delivery as well.

What. Didn't this story get posted a while ago?

Also, I seem to recall demand dropping sharply within the first two weeks.

A sales drop after a launch? Say it ain't so! Say that it didn't happen for any other console!

A sales drop was expected, a sales drop of this magnitude is obviously something to worry about. The question is what happens later on, short term we're looking at good figures for the PS3, and the Wii, and the Xbox360.

You're never going to see good EU/PAL data. Unlike NPD and Media Create, GfK doesn't regularly distribute data to the public.

Occasionally, subscribers who are competitors in the market will give vague citations or data for a limited territory, but the PAL picture is very murky compared to NTSC/NTSC-J
