Penn & Teller Bullshit Season 5 - Apologist?

Post by Xon »

After sampling the available episodes for the new penn & teller bullshit season, I find it deeply disappointing that they have gone for what is mostly an apologist route.

The episode on obesity was bait & switch which ended up mostly talking about wieght loss companies, and even then they flipped between what they where talking about in a way which sure as hell didnt help thier case.

So what was the point there were trying to get across. Or was it so confusion you had to ask, was there a point.

Bullshit is fun, but biased as hell.

Make your own research and do not belive all that bullshit says.

Yeah, though it is nice that they do make retractions when new information is brought to light (Global Warming, Second-hand Smoke).

I haven't watch any other episodes except the one on circumcision and the recent one on breasts. I liked both. They were very anti circumcision and we use that episode to convince a lot of parents. With the breast episode, they did a section on nursing in public and it was great, they were very supportive. We had a nurse-in at the toys r us in NYC and they were there filming. :D
Say NO to circumcision IT'S A BOY! This is a great link to show expecting parents.

Some states have regulations allowing mothers to breastfeed in public, other lack them, others have legislation that states that a mother should cover up while nursing...it kinda depends by state. Here in PA we have no laws protecting mothers and we are having increasing numbers of incidents involving discrimination of nursing mothers (such as being thrown from restaurants, reprimanded for nursing on mall benches, etc). But we are trying to change that with Bill 34!! :D

I think the Penn and Teller approach really helps people see our side. It's light hearted and funny. However, their language probably turns off some of the more conservative people we are trying to convince (at least I have found that with their circumcision episode more conservative parents are turned off by it). But we have other materials for those types.

That's about the sum of it. People complain that they don't want to see a woman's breasts because it's immoral or some such nonsense. Ironically, they often go into Mrs. Lovejoy rants that boil down to, "Won't someone please think of the children!"

They do think of the children, the children are hungry and needs feediing. :D

This is of topic but why do the US think that nakedness/sex is worse then violence?

To be fair, we have much more violence than love on the tv/newspaper/whatever here too.

The American right wing is all Osama Bin Lite when it comes to social issues.

Some of them, like Dinesh D'Souza, virtually admit this up-front when they say we should modify our society to suit the wishes of Islamic fundamentalists. Hence, laws forcing women to be "modest" (gee, where else do we hear of such laws?)

I've found Bullshit! to get more wishy washy the further they've gone along.

The best episode, hands down, IMO, was Bottled Water. This show is predominantly entertainment, after all, and it was damn entertaining watching people pontificate about the differences in premium exotic bottled water that in reality all came from the same garden hose, unmodified.
