Yeah, after her sending me a pic of herself in civvies out of the blue, I was amazed at how quickly she dropped contact after that "security" excuse.

Right, on to Fanfic, I'll check the back here tomorrow night.

CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAPPPPPPPPP!!!!! I was clicking on the no button and the screen shifted as it was loading, making me press yes. Can anyone change that?

I think those aliens that abducted Geordi and said "We find things, we find things that make us go, We are smart" would do bette fighting than a Starfleet security team.

what is a hopper? I know they are their dropships of some kind, but what do they look like?

p.s. I'm not in the military, I'm going to be in a year, the only problem is, and ya'll may find this as silly. I can't decide which branch to join. Could ya'll tell me which branch ya'll recommend.

A certain crowning jewel would be "Chain of Command," where three senior officers on the flagship of the Federation, including its captain, are sent on a covert mission into hostile territory.

The scenario: Captain Picard, Doctor Crusher and Worf are sent to destroy Cardassian facilities to create a super-virus. They run through "intense" training, which just means that they run through simulated tunnels over and over again. None of this training apparently involves target practice, nor torture resistance (which would have come in handy). They are ordered to destroy the super-virus stuff at any cost, yet they have no explosives.

The whole deal turns out to be a trap (great intel on the part of the Federation), and Picard is captured. Note that Picard has no cyanide tablets. Nor does he have something that will just incinerate his body, so that the Cardassians have no proof of Federation involvement, should he be captured ... which he was.

Also note that the team is made of recognizable Federation personnel, especially Picard. How is the Federation supposed to officially deny their involvement if Picard is captured? He's easily identifiable!

Why the fuck is Crusher there? She's a sickbay doctor, not a field medic! Didn't it occur to those planning this mission that, if the need for serious medical attention arose, the team was probably screwed anyway, and thus the doctor is more a liability than an asset?

Why weren't any of the three given the chance to refuse the mission? Crusher and Worf didn't know what the mission was about until after it had begun! You don't just divert flagship officers from their duties to go on a specialized, covert operation without giving them the opportunity to turn it down!

I'm Army and have been for 12 years and love it. I recommend it, or Marines, if you're loking for a real ass-kicking challenge.

If you want travel and don't mind being away from friends and fmily for loooong periods of time-- and want to play with some cool toys-- go Navy. But if you have serious ties to somone at home, it may not be so great.

If you like the sea and want to do something shipboard though, then try Coast Gard. Those guys are kick-ass sailors. They tend to stay in one port area, and get deployed out to sea for periods but nothing like six months (more like a couple weeks at a time, I think).

Also, there are serious needs in the Border Patrol, if you want a serious mission for clearing out drug runners and potential infiltrators. Long jeep patrols in the desert, if you don't mind it.

There's also the FBI and CIA, they're looking for good people and should not be discounted, same with most State, County, or local police departments. INS also has a armed patrol service.

Armed police are also employed by the US Postal Service and the Railroads, the IRS actually has an armed service, and the Secret Service protects many important personnel. The Forest Service and Fidh & Game services also have armed backcountry patrols.

Don't overlook traditional community service bastions as Fire, Paramedics, smokejumper, EMT, either.

Airport security is increasingly important, as are private security guards for such companies as Brinks or Wells Fargo, or even site security.

A person can always take survival camp courses and try to sign on as a mercenary.

And it is still important to be involved in strong community organizations such as Eagle Scouts, or to be a councilor for the equally important Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts or Campfire Girls. Or a school crossing guard.

There's also the Air Force.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

 Um first of all, you don't divert naval personnel who have no training in covert ops to do a mission like that. Period. That's what specialists are for. It'd be like sending one of the Joint Chiefs into afghanistan to find the bin liner himself.

Infantry. Not that I'm biased or anything. Afterall, who'd want to be a girly Marine, or a pantywaisted Pilot? And I'm pretty sure the Navy only eligible for Lady-boys, so that leaves the real men's service infantry - an exciting life of pretending to be a shrub whilst firing lumps of metal at each other. :D

Seriously though, look at what you want to do in the military, explore the branches, gather the facts and don't listen to the recruiters. What sorts of things are you looking to do?

Good point, how far into Molecular stability does Transporter Jamming go? SI it just an inteference field that would make People and tech beaming unviable, or does it actully prevent any meaningful reintegration at all- so you end up with disperate atoms blowing in the wind?

If you've got the Qualifications (if you want to be a pilot), then go for it. After all, where else in the world does lying in a Sun lounger having chilled champagne qualify as basic training? :D

Seriously though, do your research (flying doesn't preclude the USMC, or Navy), pick the branch that you think will serve you best and go for it.

Thanks, I guess I will look at there websites, but I wonder if the recruitment website is just full of bold faced lies or are thy giving the whole story?

p.s.In the voyager episode where 7 of 9 has scitzophrenia, she has a phaser and is a Klingon I believe, but then she goes to a scared child. Tuvok comes up to her and asks her to give him the gun.

Shouldn't he tell her to keep it on the ground and kick it to him, so there won't be a chance of her shooting him when she has it in her hand? Yep, he sure is trained for security, isn't he?

Well, they certainly have some nice toys but so do most of the services and it's pretty much unanimous around here that the Air Force is the wussiest service :D , of course I don't think any Air Force people have been around to voice their opinion.

Anyway, pretty much all the services deploy on a semi-regular basis these days. The Navy is probably away from home the most during non-wartime but in the US the Air Force has been sending squadrons from bases all over the country to do regular tours enforcing the no-fly zone over Iraq.

If you want to fly all of the services have their flying elements. It all depends on what you want to fly. The Marines, believe or not, probably have the most diverse choices of one service. Various helos in various roles, EW planes (EA-6B), Hornets, Harriers...I don't know of them flying any cargo planes though.

Not that I know of, most of the cargo capability the Corps has in in CH's.

I haven't really looked through the recruitment sites in awhile but what I remember about the Navy's was that it did not lie to you. It didn't tell you a whole lot because they really want you interested enough to talk to a recruiter.

I haven't known a recruiter to actually lie but they do paint an overly rosey picture of things. Exageration and not telling you the whole story is the part that annoyed me. A bunch of guys in my boot camp division joined, in part, because of Top Gun. The jobs that most of them joined as did have them working on the flightdeck though just not flying. In theory they all potentially had a shot at trying to become and officer and a pilot. In truth, working a Navy job, especially the flight deck, doesn't lend itself to a lot of time towards doing that. Also, you might have people actively trying to disuade you or slow down the process because they don't want to lose the manpower. There are people who are helpful as well but I think it is best to join a service with a clear plan on what you want to do and if possible a written contract stating what you are going in for. Be careful about joining "as a stepping stone" to what you really want unless that is absolutely the only way because the stepping stone can very easily be a stumbling block.

Watch out for "Sea Stories". These are typical guy stories except they envolve a lot more sex, drinking and having a good time than even your most partied out college drop out. Although, those are mostly enlisted stories and if you are planning on flying you'll need to be an officer anyway. On that note, I'd recomend either going RotC or OCS. The academies are good schools but four years of hell compared to the alternatives. If you plan on making it a career being an acadamy grand is generally believed to give you a slight edge towards making Admiral from what I've heard.

I don't think any sailors would be offended at someone pointing out that they are not soldiers. It's exactly that failure of division of labor that makes ST suck to high heaven. OK, maybe not exactly, but it's a contributing factor!

That and the use of Command Staff for every type of mission. Why have specialists when you have the Multi-tool officer?
