Weird MP3 problem

I've noticed recently that mp3s and the audio from videos tends to skip occasionally (only in a minor but irritating fashion, like by giving me an extra drumbeat in places, but still, it pisses me off, given the ridiculous amounts of music I listen to) if I'm doing something like typing a reply to a forum or msn at the same time. I recall this happening with my old soundcard too, before it broke. I've only just bought this one (a terratec aureon), so I doubt it's about to break again. I thought it might be the PCI slot that was fucked, so I changed the slot the card was in, and it seems to do it less but it still does it.

I've had the rest of the computer for a while now, so it's possible that it's just giving me messages that I ought to upgrade in the near future, which I planned on doing anyway, but will have to leave till after I go to New York for obvious funding reasons.

Are there any options anywhere that people can think of that might be contributing to this?

You aren't using Winamp, are you?
I've had weird artifacts just like you describe occur when playing back mp3's with it that didn't happen when using Windows Media Player to do so.

I am using the ol' winamp, yes. That may be it. I really loathe WMP, though, but I will have a go with it for a while. I have a pretty huge playlist (9600) is it possible to search through it and enqueue specific tracks? Rather than bollocking around with all that library business and playing one track and then choosing another.

I'd recommend snagging Foobar2000. It's lightweight and is vastly superior for handling huge playlists than WMP.

Okay, WMP has an excellent sound quality if I mess around with these settings for along enough. Only trouble is, it doesn't seem to keep the playlist around after it's been closed and reopened, which means I have to wait for like 2 minutes every time I open it again.

And I thing I just just noticed another fucking skip, grrrr.

I've moved to Quintessential years ago, give it a try. I know quite a few "lite" audiophiles who swear by it, and personally I can't see myself ever going back to WinAmp.
