Silly headset question...

I have a Plantronics M110 phone headset, and when I plug it into the headset jack on my wireless 360 controller (I use it on my PC with the Wireless Gaming Receiver), the sound output works fine but I can't get the mic to pick up a damn thing. The headset works fine on my phone, so I don't think it's a problem with the headset. Any ideas?

Check the pin-out specs for the controller and the headset. The mic on the headset is also most likely a condenser mic (or possibly an powered dynamic mic, due to the size), which requires that a voltage be applied to a portion of the mic in order for it to work.

I think I figured it out. There are two odd-looking jacks with two pins each on either side of the headset jack onto the controller. The official 360 headset has a puck on the end that plugs into the headset jack and has a volume dial and a mic mute switch. As you can see from this image, the puck has two little connectors that plug into the jacks on the controller. It's possible that the controller powers the mic on the official headset through these connectors, thus explaining why my phone headset doesn't work right. It seems that if I want to use a headset with the controller, I'll have to buy a 360 headset.

Hmm, odd. It doesn't work when I click the link I made. Go here, then scroll about a third of the way down the page. There's a series of images of the 360 and its accessories, and the pic I linked is the second one from the left in the bottom row, which clearly shows the connector. Click on it for a (much) larger version.
