I'm Army and have been for 12 years and love it. I recommend it, or Marines, if you're loking for a real ass-kicking challenge.
If you want travel and don't mind being away from friends and fmily for loooong periods of time-- and want to play with some cool toys-- go Navy. But if you have serious ties to somone at home, it may not be so great.
If you like the sea and want to do something shipboard though, then try Coast Gard. Those guys are kick-ass sailors. They tend to stay in one port area, and get deployed out to sea for periods but nothing like six months (more like a couple weeks at a time, I think).
Also, there are serious needs in the Border Patrol, if you want a serious mission for clearing out drug runners and potential infiltrators. Long jeep patrols in the desert, if you don't mind it.
There's also the FBI and CIA, they're looking for good people and should not be discounted, same with most State, County, or local police departments. INS also has a armed patrol service.
Armed police are also employed by the US Postal Service and the Railroads, the IRS actually has an armed service, and the Secret Service protects many important personnel. The Forest Service and Fidh & Game services also have armed backcountry patrols.
Don't overlook traditional community service bastions as Fire, Paramedics, smokejumper, EMT, either.
Airport security is increasingly important, as are private security guards for such companies as Brinks or Wells Fargo, or even site security.
A person can always take survival camp courses and try to sign on as a mercenary.
And it is still important to be involved in strong community organizations such as Eagle Scouts, or to be a councilor for the equally important Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts or Campfire Girls. Or a school crossing guard.
There's also the Air Force.
