I've had a thought about the GE conquering the ST Galaxy

Post by Steve »

That thought is simple. Why bother?

The powers there pose no threat. To go to war with them would be an expenditure of military resources, not major since you probably won't take many, if any, losses, but still an expenditure. Finally, once you obliterate the powers of the AQ, the Dominion, the Borg, and every other race, you're left with a second galaxy that needs occupying, garrisons, and the like, and one that has an infrastructure millennia behind the Empire's, requiring material and resources to upgrade to the standards of the GE.

Now, I know Mike's reason, namely, an enemy to distract the common citizen from the Empire's internal problems, a unifying force. But actually conquering them makes this only a temporary bonus: once the enemy is vanquished and occupied, the same old problem pops up.

So, my idea is, why not get the best of both worlds? Move through the wormhole, whatever it is that links the SW Galaxy to the ST Galaxy, encounter the UFP, and then back home use propaganda to make the UFP into a bigger threat than it really poses (Much bigger threat, actually :)). In other words, a one-way Cold War situation, a bogeyman to keep the citizenry and the individual worlds in line with the Imperial government. Lie about the UFP's size, scope, and technological advancement, maybe capture some UFP ships and mock them up with Imp tech to be used in recordings of "border skirmishes" and the like so that the people would really think they were caught in a Cold War with a hegemonistic Communist empire that would dismantle their economic system and subject them to a violent revolution and the like. In turn, paint the Rebels and vocal elements of the "Loyal Opposition" as being sponsered by the UFP to discredit them.

Maybe, eventually, the Empire would go ahead and conquer the UFP, but for the most part it's smarter to leave them "intact" and use them as a bogeyman for the citizens of the Empire to rally against.

So, what do you think? Good point and idea? Bad? Should I go lay down and lay off the M&Ms for a while? :D

It is a requirement that they kill Wesley Crusher for existing. If the UFP tries to defend Wesley, then it must get stomped.

Didn't Palaptine manipulate the Clone Wars to gain popularity? I Don't see why the Empire couldn't do it again. Still, the Feds are easy game, and they can manipulate a war with the Borg afterwards.

Why bother? Well we can go about this too ways, one the way it would really happen, ie how would the UFP get into a conflict with the GE? That could be complicated. We can aslo go about it a second way and that is to say who cares? ie no reason really, lets fight! Unless your writing a fan fic, i choose to go with the second option.

You conquer it because it's an entire galaxy with a very small price tag. The ST Milky Way doesn't just have Feddies, Klingons, Borg, etc., but it has stars, planets, black holes, pulsars, and all other manner of lucrative property.
You colonize it for all the reasons empires ever colonize. More resources, an outlet for population, new markets, and as mentioned, a unifying political goal for the citezenry.
That's what empires do. In the end, the more territory that is won for Rome, London, or Coruscant, the better the standard of living for those lucky enough to be living in Rome, London, or Coruscant. Think about it: if the GE can relocate a bunch of its industrial infrastructure to this ripe and distant yet accessible galaxy, there's more room for the service industry in the Coruscant galaxy. They're effectively upping the property value for the home galaxy.
As I said, this is what Empires do. Rome had France, GB had India, Exxon has Nigeria, and the GE would have the Milky Way. It's about property, not war.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

I was thinking of doing a fanfic along those lines except that for the Imperials, the whole thing would not be a challenge and therefore would not interesting reading. [Except in one possible circumstance: as a sequel to "Conquest." There, the New Empire would want an excuse to keep martial law in the "autonomous" Federation.] As a result, I started experimenting with with the NR instead. After the YV are finally defeated, the galaxy will be a wreck and all sorts of resources and strip mining will be needed. Do you think the NR members will tolerate this in their own star systems? But the Federation would be easy pickings. All they would need is some BS justification and they could bring civilization to the alien primitives.

Which do you think would be more interesting? Imperial or Republic deception and scheming against the UFP? Or even the Corporate Sector Authority? I like Republic because the conspirators would be fighting elements of their own government too.

Oh, come on, these debates aren't about "realism". Realistically, Palpatine would try to negotiate a treaty of friendship, and then slowly try to consolidate power and support in the ST galaxy... then, when he's got enough on his side, THEN he'd make his move.

Indeed. Palpatine's an evil sadistic bastard who couldn't care less about his subordinates, but he's smart enough to fight only when he has a good chance of winning.

Forget the federation, try the Borg. Their tech is better so they're less fudging the numbers, and the thought of being turned part droid would be more terrifying to the citizens of the GE than the UFP taking over.

I don't think being cyborg is that big of a concern. What the Imperials fear is losing their "soul." They feared losing it enough to ally with the Rebellion at Bakura.

You see theres only so much you can do with folks like the Borgs. There big and slow and stupid, and did I mention slow? Seemingly they pose less of a threat to the Empire than does the Federation. Whats more if cowardly Feds are outgunned they might surrender themselves and their ship, not so the zombie-istic Borg who will march to their doom in gloriously numbers! They'd probably just as soon blow up the ship than let the Imps get it. That is assuming of course they don't let the Imps mover freely around their ship and quietly place a thermal detonators next to each group of borg they see.....they leave without incident...then 3..2..1..BOOM! All Borg are dead they take the ship (or more or les its undamaged core at least).

Actually - I'm sure that there are more superpowers in the ST galaxy than those we have heard of - ie. the Dominion, UFP, the Klingon and Romulan Empires, the Cardassian Union, the Ferengi Alliance, the Borg Collective and Species 8472.

After all - while the Voyager explored the Delta Quadrant, we know very little about the Gamma Quadrant except for the Dominion - and very little of the ST galaxy is charted anyway.

However, whether they can withstand the empire is unknown, since these imaginary superpowers are entirely hypothetical.

Now if they had anything to match Imperial technology, they would already rule the Galaxy or at least large portions of it. Since they don't, we can assume they have roughly equal tech like the Feds and their little playmates.

Well there is always the possibiblity of some super powered race (by ST standards, at least) like the Voth, I think, and if they wanted to they could take over the galaxy, but are peaceful and try to spend there time ignoring the pitiful organization(s).

Well now if there is a race which has the technology to take on the Empire, but didn't expand because they're peaceful, then they'll still be overwhelmed by the superior numbers of the Empire.
