There's a good reason for that. The games have some special things built into the Pokédex which only become active when you trade for Pokémon from foreign language versions. You'll find an NPC trainer in game from Germany (or at least, he was from Germany in the Japanese version), who'll trade you, IIRC, his Magikarp for something equally pathetic, which opens up the first of those.

They are using hacks.

The North American release and newer copies of the Japanese games have the glitch fixed, but the launch copies from Japan had a very exploitable glitch that essentially allowed you to get as many Pokes of any kind you wanted.

I mean, yeah, there are bonuses to trading internationally, but COME ON.

Quick question: How many lands have they plonked in this one? Can we *finally* Go Kanto, Johto Hoen and whatever the new one is called?
EBC: Northeners, Huh! What are they good for?! Absolutely nothing! :P

No, it's just Sinnoh. Personally, that's always annoyed me about the post-Gold/Silver/Crystal sequels. I hate being stranded in ONE region of ONE country. If there's like 500 different species of Pokemon in Japan alone, imagine what there must be on the mainland, or throughout the rest of the world? At least let us go back to the old regions. That was one of my favorite things about G/S/C; apart from the day/night/morning transitions, which they did bring back.

That's the first I've ever heard of this glitch. I have one of those Japanese launch copies, so could you perhaps elaborate?

It was mentioned yesterday or the day before in the Pokemon thread on the PA forums. So that means it's somewhere in the middle of a locked 100 page thread. I'm sorry, but I don't know that I can track down the specific post about how to do it. :P

I have to admit, I'm fairly skeptical about there being a glitch like that. If only because I would've thought I'd hear about it before now, if it was a legit hack, rather than something like an action replay code. ^^; I don't run a huge Pokémon site for nothing.

Really though....it's not hard to get starters, etc, via breeding. If the Japanese started trading legendaries, or ones that are only available through event tickets, then I'd start to be suspicious, but just trading things that could easily be obtained with a little effort? Nah.

Electric pokemon + Thunderwave? :P Limiting their movement is always a good idea. (And if they don't have Pikachu about the place, they deserve to be punished!

I'm currently trying to play Leaf Green. It's really depressing how old it feels.

Fucking yes! I replenished my supply and knocked one down to a sliver of health and then used 5 Heal Balls and 4 Net Balls before finally catching the damn thing.

And luckily it had the ability I was looking for, Super Luck, which ups the Crit-Hit ratio of all attacks.

I'm the webmaster of Bulbagarden.

As far as catching Pokémon goes, might I recommend that you try Friend Balls for the early game, until you're able to get Ultra Balls in...I think it was the third gym town. You'll find that the Friend Balls have a superior catch rate to those ones you were trying.

Holy shit dudes, I bought a Wifi dongle today. I've battled twice (and lost twice) already and I am having a BLAST.

I can't wait to trade for stuff.

I've been busy with post-grad studies as of late, so I haven't played the game in quite some time, but if anyone was wanting to trade for a Japanese Pokémon of some description, just let me know, and I'll see if I can get it for you. My friend code is 2964 3290 1888.

I haven't finished the Elite 4 (like I said, haven't played for ages. ^^;; ), but I can get you anything that wouldn't require me to trade it from my GBA games.

Seriously, battling and trading online is sooooo awesome. I just got a female Chimchar from Japan for a Pichu I caught last night.

Sinnoh Dex: 150/150

Time to start minmaxing! EVs work exactly the same in D/P as they did in 3rd gen, right?

My FC is: 1890 7686 0995

Let me know yours and we can perhaps battle or trade sometime. I haven't started breeding yet, but I'll be getting a Ditto sometime soon.

Is it just me, or does this game have one of the worst selection of Pokemon available for team building?

Nearing the end game here and I was seeing if anyone knew of some good training spots arround level 40. So far the best I have found is a bird trainer that usually responds to the Vs. Seeker in the foggy area with two Noctowls that can be taken down rather easy by my entire team for a total of 2700 exp. Just wonder if there is any thing better.

I have the same problem. I need to level my team up to make it all the way through the Elite Four and the Champion but there aren't any great places to train (that I can find) once your team gets to the 50's level-wise.
The best thing you can do is the right thing. The second best thing you can do is the wrong thing. The worst thing you can do is nothing.

I think if you use the Vs. Seeker outside the restaurant, the people inside will battle you again.

At least, I used it outside then went inside and was able to fight them a second time.
