I'd almost hesitate recommending Escaflowne (the series, not the film*) to Shep since it does have mechs in it, but it is very good. But he might also be turned off by the shojo-anime aspects.

That may be true. But in the case of Anime, the characters and plot are not what makes it better than real life, but instead its what keeps it a cut above the utter tripe that is North American cartoons and (generally speaking) gives it a status comparable to shows and movies played by real people. Its one of the reasons why anime is so popular and has such a huge cult following, because the characters and themes are either very captivating and entertaining, or are very "realistic".t's not that. Of course there are many childish and completely unrealistic anime features out there, but even those sometimes have more substance than alot of American cartoons and they certainly aren't the majority of anime.

Notice, that we haven't been mentioning who can beat who in terms of Anime vs. whatever you like. Also notice that I didn't mension anything of the sort when I WAS debating with you (Sakura vs. Nazis, and please for the love of doG let that thread stay dead).MKSheppard wrote:It's not that.

Anime is generally not meant to be realistic. The settings are there only for the purpose of telling the story, not the other way around. In addition, Anime plots tend to be rather . . . creative, something that Americian filmakers could learn from.

I wonder how Shep would react if tied down and forced to watch Shojo Anime. Better yet, Magical Girl anime.

Nah, I'd never buy the DVD for Sailor Moon. I can't even be bothered to download the stuff (not that I download anything illegally at all). I only saw the Sailor Moon S movie, and that was bad enough (I don't beleive in bashing anything until I've at least seen it first).MKSheppard wrote:I'd sleep through it and when you untied me, I'd knee you in the groin, and put my foot through your TV, and then use the broken shards of your Sailor Moon DVD to perform unnecessary surgery on you.
What's more disturbing than Sailor Moon, are the guys who LIKE Sailor Moon and other similar shows. Hitoshi Doi for example, has much too much time on his hands. His site is a gold mine of information, especially on Sailor Moon, but, ERGH.

Yeah, but I'm usually to lazy so I just read the first few posts on the first page and then the last page and maybe if you're really lucky, the page before the last; particularly if it doesn't seem to interesting. I've now read all the pages and still don't understand why it's so popular. I don't understand what the hell most of you are talking about.

Actually come to think of it. That Sailor Moon S movie with the Ice Queen was sorta good and entertaining. But everything else I have seen of Sailor Moon turns me off from it except for the cuteness and sex appeal of the chicks.
Oh yeah and back on topic. Shep, do yourself a favor and watch Jin Roh if you can get your hands on it. It should definately show you the true potential of what anime is capable of. Particularily if you prefer realistic artwork and storyline
