How do you install the flags? I dumped all the new folders into /empires but they're not showing up.

The colors are off, in that it's supposed to be silver, but it probably don't look good in silver. Then again, I think Nemesis retconned the Romulan flag to be a picture of the Romulan-Federation border, as if the entire reason for the Romulan's existence was to avenge the wrongs of hundreds of years ago .

Where are you getting your shipsets, any good one-stop places.
I linked to a place with all the ship sets in the post. Here it is again.

Yep. It's only 500 points, after all.

They also need to go in GameTypes/BalanceMod1.05+/Empires.

The United Federation of Planets, circa 2286 is in. Using TMP shipset and flag.

Temporal weapons of doom.

I just watched a group of connies fight in real time. This should be fun.

About the graphics bugs. If you turn to low detail and low textures, almost all my graphics bugs go away.

Sent reeling by the destruction of the Sa-Matra at the hands of the New Alliance of Free Stars, those Ur-Quan that remain have fled far, far away from Alliance territory. With their morale and cultural definition shattered, will the Ur-Quan be able to return to dominace? Only time will tell.

Brian, thanks for the tip, I'll give it a try.

Tux, just checking, should we set tech points for new players at low or none? Don't want to create false starts.

Does anybody have any tips or hints. I don't know anything about SE:V.

I just fooled around with some sims and it looks really good, at least at 0 tech level. I sent 100 fighters against 10 frigates, the kind you make on turn 1. The frigates had 3 point defense guns and 2 duc's each. In stock, 100 of the most crap kind of fighters manage to kill whole swarms of frigates. Now it looks like fighters aren't broken.

I simmed 10 frigates with 2 capital ship missiles and a bit of armor versus 10 frigates with 3 point defense guns and 2 duc's. Surprisingly, the capital ship missiles won. It looks like missiles aren't useless anymore -- travel at 50 km/s, the PD guns only get off one shot if they're lucky, and a 50% bonus to-miss while PD guns look like they've got no inherent bonus to hit missiles.

How does it work out on the higher tech levels in Balance Mod. Are there any "uber" weapons we should look out for like Meson Blaster and Blaster Turrets in stock. I'm looking at the max tech game and everything seems really balanced.

Hey. I was attracted by the SE:V game you started over on PBW, and came over here to have a look around, becoming immediately impressed. Never have I seen such an awesome combination of science-fiction and smart-assedness. Very nice.

Thanks for clueing (clue-ing?) me in.

Anyway, I've signed up as the Rhak'Thrallan Exiled. I'm at work, however, and don't have access to the name of the shipset I'm using. It's the bluish crystal one from stock, if that helps at all. I'll post again when I get home tonight, with my flag and shipset names.

Thanks again!

Anybody have a saved game of Balance Mod for me to try. I'm looking for something in the middle, from maybe medium fighter and cruiser and a decent level of shields, weapons, capital ship missiles and PD. All I've got is level nothing and level 100, and the sims aren't too reliable.

Set to none.

And good choice on the Ur-Quan, I was close to picking them myself.

I don't really have much experience with Balance Mod either, but I remember missiles being good early on. Lots of range and damage, not easy to shoot down.

Oh, great. Well, I'll go remake my empire, you might want to change the details on PBW.

Context, please? Don't know what you're talking about.

Oh yeah in the unlikely event someone needs replacing, everybody should use a unique password, that isn't their bank account or SDN password (lol).

And everybody make sure to use a password. It's not that everybody will go and try and cheat: if you don't, sometimes there's a bug when I log in that lets me see everyone, even if I don't deliberately try and cheat. And besides, far less headache involved for everyone (we're talking 6 months of game here I'm sure it'll get heated.)

Heh, yeah...

Anyway, I've uploaded my empire, using the stock Sergetti shipset, with the Eee flag, and the Neutral 9 race portrait.

Thanks.

Man why are you even saying that, take as long as you need it's not like we don't wait weeks to start a game anyway. Besides Tux said Monday, which really means next Friday.

Personally I want all these people in the game: SirNitram, MkSheppard, Stark. I know all those people play now, so I want to kick their ass. Especially Stark. I'd wait 3 weeks if we could convince them to show their face.

I meant the tech points. I also forgot until now that I could just load and edit the empire I already made.

Agreed. I'm getting Nitram or trying ( I sent him a copy of SEV with a copy of Machiavelli's 'The Prince' packaged with it, to get him in the mood). I've got Covenant interested I think.

I'll probably use the Cylons as my side. Unless I want colonials, since their models are a /lot/ better in the sets I'm looking at...

Edit: What patch have we settled on? Balance mod over what update?

The Star Trek shipsets by Atrocities look the best to me. My TMP shipset looks really polished, though there's some non-canonical stuff in there. The TNG shipset looks really nice, even numbers on the hull if you zoom in close enough.

I think we're using 1.33 and the latest balance mod.

Tux, what happens if stock SE:V updates and balance mod doesn't. Is there a chance the saved games aren't compatible, or when Kwok says it will never break saved games, does that mean I don't have to back up my Steam.

Man, I didn't get a book!

I got the game and patched. Looking at the shippiesets. The Ngrath caught my eye. Once I'm not pressed for time at work (WOULD HAVE BEEN THIS WEEKEND IF I HADN'T GOTTEN A GODDAMN WEEKEND CALL-IN) I could even mod my own ships like I did last time with my Vree, Tholian, and Zerg shipsets.

BTW, how do I get Shep's flag pack to work for me? And are we going to swap shipsets, or just download them online? I want to know, since if we swap, I could change the racename and such. ;D

When SE V updates, we'll probably have to go on hold until the BM releases an update, which doesn't usually take very long. But we should all make fresh backups anyway, and then replace our backups after a successful update.

The installation procedure for ship sets and flag packs is to unzip the Empires folder into both your SEV and SEV/GameTypes/BalanceMod105+ folders. If you want to see other peoples' ship sets, you'll also need copies of theirs, too. Previously, there was a bug where PBW would permanently replace a custom ship set with a randomly picked one on the second turn, but I think that was fixed.

Ahh, good. I had to erase the flagpack because it wasn't working right, but this should fix that up nicely. I'd like to make my own flag, but honestly I don't know enough about this new game to decide in what manner I shall strive to dominate the universe.

No. 1.06 is correct. It's under the folder 1.05+ because all versions that are savegame-compatible with 1.05 have that folder name.

I can just substitute whatever empire I want as long as the filename matches, right? If not, I'll just leave the Rebel Alliance flag (if that's what that is), as it's really not worth the bother to rejoin.

I'm hearing that the next patch is supposed to be out next week, so we should probably start right after that. Hopefully we won't have to recreate the game for that.
