I say nay, I agree with Dalton, although I thought it looked more like an American or British officer.

Nah, the round cheeks is a German trait. My grandfather's side of the family has the heavy cheeks (his grandfather, IIRC, was the one from Germany, though it may be a generation further back).

He's probably not a hillbilly. I'd need to see what he was wearing to decide.

Also, C. Ryan interviewed everyone from General Walther Wenk, Busse,
and the commander of Army Group Vistula, General Heinrici.

There is nothing in Tolkien's work to compare with Ryan's description of
the opening barriage of the last Great Soviet Offensive of World War 2,
in which entire forests were set afire, and blood ran from soviet
artillerymen's mouths even though they were screaming to reduce
the overpressure, and how so many shells landing in a small area
actually caused an atmospheric disturbance in that area.

Or how the soviet infantrymen didn't wait for the bridges to be thrown
across the flooded Oder river, and began to swim across in full combat
gear, despite the freezing temperatures, to get back at the Fascist
invaders....

I'm sure the Soviets have some form hillbillyski that live in the southern Ural's, though no doubt there stills where confiscated during the war to provide wiring for more tanks.

Actually that happened in Virginia during the American Civil War, though for other uses.

Well, a hillbilly is any backwoods person who lives in the hills, so him being russian doesn't rule it out. It only rules out him being a Redneck or a Good Ol' Boy

The Russian Front doesn't get a lot of mention in AMH courses other than the Battle for Stalingrad. I focused on the Pacific War for my writings, particularly analyzing the Battle of Midway and OP-20-G's redeeming contribution to solving the AF puzzle.

Why the fuck are you even trying to compare WW2 anecdotes with modern British mythology? Is this another one of your pretentious and trollish digs at Tolkien fans? You complain about fanwhores when you yourself are one?

Just on one of my rants.
Why the fuck are you even trying to compare WW2 anecdotes with modern British mythology? Is this another one of your pretentious and trollish digs at Tolkien fans? You complain about fanwhores when you yourself are one?
I'm on one of my rants, inspired by certain Tolkien fans who like
to scream that Tolkien was the Greatest Author of the 20th Century,
and that we should all STFU because he was an Oxford professor
in English.

It's fucking funny that with all that brainpower, he wasn't able to comprehend
the fact that it doesn't matter if you have a great story or plot,
if your writing is so leaden and dull that it makes people want
to stab their eyes out with icepicks to end the PAIN THE PAIN!

I tried to read the Similarrion a few days ago, and I put it away
after a few minutes because it was reminding me of those goddamn
worthless novels they forced us to read in High School.

Cornelius Ryan may not have had the stature that Tolkien had
in the literary community (he was derided in his own time for
being too "light", much as the late Steven Ambrose was in our time)

But he understood more than anyone else how to write an
ENTERTAINING BOOK. That is the key to being a successful
author of a novel. You have to ENTERTAIN your readers, rather
than overloading them with backstory, which Tolkien did.

Tolkien's son, Chris suffered from headaches and lots of sleepless
nights trying to figure out how to edit his father's books after
his dad's death, because Tolkien wrote them like old legends,
with no central moving plot, etc.

It's a damn shame that The Odyssey, Homer's epic from
Greek mythology, written thousands of years ago, with a
good translator and editor, manages to outdo LOTR for
sheer fun.

For sheer breadth of the backstory, LOTR is good, but if you
try to read it, prepare yourself for MINDNUMBING HEADACHES
as you try to figure out WTF is going on.

I've also had problems with this kind of "backstory creep", as I read
Imperial Phoenix and I feel that I could cut a lot out and rewrite it
to vastly tighten the plot up and get it moving a LOT faster than the
current version on the archive does.

A quote to end this rant:

"People who rave about Tolkien should read Robert Howard & Clark Ashton Smith to find out where the conventions they love in fantasy writing really came from"

David Weber and David Drake

I read LOTR when I was 15, with no background whatsoever. I had no problem, and enjoyed it immensely.
