Driving Music - I want your opinions!
So, for my summer job, I spend a lot of time driving about town. I need a playlist or two that can fit on a single CD-R. What makes good around-the-town driving music?
Requirements:
* One or two club bangers aka loud music to blare at stop lights to scare the old ladies
*Not crap music
*Some slow, long distance, across town, cruising music
*Some fast, weaving in and out of traffic, energy music.
Recommend.

Hm. Some random suggestions:
America - A Horse With No Name makes for great cruising
Iron Maiden - Aces High ought to scare the old ladies. Good for those high-intensity maneuvers too.
Judas Priest - You Got Another Thing Coming is a good all-purpose track. Depends on your tastes, I suppose, whether it qualifies as energy, cruising, or scare-old-ladies.
Various Dire Straits tunes come to mind as well. Money for Nothing, One World, and Ride Across the River strike me as good cruising music.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."
Dr Mckay is in the lead so far for most songs that I actually have. But don't despair, friends - I will find the music you talked about. And I will have a listen. Until then, it's gonna be CCR and Steppenwolf, and BSG (maybe).
Good thing I got this spindle of CDs recently. I'm gonna burn through it quick.
And keep the recommendations coming.

Er, if you already have them, why do you need to be told if they're good driving music?Phantasee wrote:Dr Mckay is in the lead so far for most songs that I actually have.

I have a large collection now. And I can't remember half of it off the top of my head. But also, I don't listen to much music when I'm driving regularly, but my cousin likes music, so now I'm getting in the habit. So I'm not really sure what good driving music is like, but I wanted an idea.Soontir C'boath wrote:Er, if you already have them, why do you need to be told if they're good driving music?Phantasee wrote:Dr Mckay is in the lead so far for most songs that I actually have.
Don't let it discourage you. For all you know, McKay is getting a prize for losing. Which he is. Because I have those songs.
Man, it's hard to encourage people. You praise one guy, and the next wonders why he isn't getting any...good thing I'm not in management. I'd fail so bad.

Some of Rob Dougan's instrumental tracks are awesome for driving around town. Probably his best-known tune is "Clubbed to Death", but he's got a few others that are great.
If you want crazy loud music to blare with the bass booming, get some Amon Tobin. Jazzy electronica at it's finest, and holy shit does it shake the windows.
On the classical side, there's nothing better than the old faithful, "Ride of the Valkyries".

Rammstein's always good for scaring the old ladies, especially Te Quiero Puta and Sehnsucht. Disturbed is also good for this.

I would just get the first Matrix album. The songs on that are all quality. Other than that, I would get some Fear Factory and some Ministry albums, probably obsolete, demanufacture, archetype, and psalm 69, houses of the mole and rio grande blood.

"Gear Jammer" by George Thorogood & The Destroyers as found on Maverick and at least one other compilation album. Ol' Lonesome George may be better know for "Bad to the Bone" but I prefer "Gear Jammer." Not surprisingly, it's about driving. Fast.
"Brightness" and "West Side Highway" by Lanterna, from Highways and Sands, respectively. These two will serve you well, especially if you happen to be driving down a wide open freeway in the South West. Actually, I recommend all of Lanterna's music, if your into acoustic guitar-dominated instrumental music.
"Not Now John" by Pink Floyd From The Final Cut. The best part (aside from the female background singers chanting "Fuck all that") is Roger Waters literally shrieking in French about finding a bar towards the end of the song, after calling out Japan, Vietnam, Russia, Sweden and Argentina.
"Sabotage," Beastie Boys, from Ill Communication. 'Nuff said.

The "Breakbeat remix" of The Death of Optimus Prime from the Transformers soundtrack is absolutely perfect for long, peaceful drives.
