Irony: Ottawa playing the neutral zone trap to perfection for the entire 3rd period after gaining a two goal lead on New Jersey, shutting them down completely and eliminating the Devils from the playoffs.

Ottawa Buffalo it is. This will most likely be the best series of the entire playoffs, skilled teams, bad blood, this has all the ingredients of a memorable series.

Bring the Violence! This will give me a most excellent show as I wait between games of the WCF. There's seems to be a lot of time in between Rounds 2 and 3 though from what i'm seeing so far...

I wonder where MoO went, I haven't seen him around ever since the Sharks went on a losing skid. One more loss and they're gone.

Well we haven't seen DgG even though the Wings are winning. Perhaps the two fought to the death and nobody won? 8)

Looks like the Sharks are toast. Unless a miracle happens, it looks like Ducks and Redwings for the conference finals.

So, to Canadian fans with better access to Hockey News. Is there truth to the rumors I've heard that Roberto Luongo had to take a huge dump right before the 2nd OT with the Ducks and not an equipment failure?

That's one strange question, and I'm afraid I don't have an answer to it. There's unfirmed reports of an unspecified Marty Brodeur injury but I've heard nothing about Luongo.

Why is it that when Brodeur just flat out sucks for a few days everyone thinks he's hurt? Maybe he's just not always the greatest thing ever 'fer crying out loud.

This is speculation going around mainly through Vancouver fans and I was told secondhand that a reporter speculated as much and never recieved a straight answer from the Nucks.

Ottawa takes the early series lead with a 5-2 win over the Sabres. Buffalo didn't look like they were there for half the game and got outshot something like 34 to 20, and it was a bit of a surprise that they kept the game close for as long as they did. Lots of big hits in the game, the bodies were flying, I have a feeling game 2 is going to be real ugly.

I was initially thinking that the Ducks/Red Wings winner would have an easier time with Ottawa than with Buffalo, but the Sabres have showed pretty clearly in this game that they can be beat if you have a good enough defense to limit their shots on goal. What's that? The three Norris Trophy finalists are in the WCF?

Bold Prediction: Western Conference, regardless of representative, claims the Cup.

Assuming Ottawa makes the Cup final (I still say there's a 50% chance they'll choke), it's not going to be easy, or even possible to stop their top line. New Jersey which had the best regular season defence and Marty Brodeur couldn't come anywhere close to shutting down the Heatley/Spezza/Alfredsson line, which is cleaning up the scoring race in the playoffs. The Ducks will have play Pronger & Neidermayer against the top line to have a realistic chance of stopping them, and I don't think Detroit has a shutdown line that can handle them.

Pronger and Neidermayer are out there for 50-55 of the 60 minutes of ice time, and everytime the HEatley line is on the ice I can almost guarantee Coach Carlye will go with the Moen/Pahlsson/R Neidermayer checking line which has consistenly shut down opponent's scoring all season. Just look at what happened to the Sedins. They've also handled the Sharks top scorers for the most part all season, and combined Crosby and Ovechkin managed just a point between the two of them (Ovechkin assist on a garbage goal) in our games against the Caps and Pens. Emery is looking better right now than I believe he actually is, I do not see him being capable of winning a seven game series against an experienced playoff team with multiple scoring lines.

From last night's game we learn that Detroit is damn lucky the Dominator's on form, they were outplayed for most of the game and getting killed in shots on goal and scoring chances. It also seems like the Ducks have a bit of a weakness on the penalty kill, as both Detroit goals were scored on the powerplay. Speaking of which, it's not a good sign when your team comes up empty on every powerplay.

I'm a little bummed the Sabres lost again, but I had a good time watching the game, at least. The people at the bar were nuts.
"Frank Deford and Jim Rome both lean hard left on almost all social issues, but they openly loathe the proliferation of soccer. And that position is important: For all practical purposes, soccer is the sports equivalent of abortion; in America, hating (or embracing) soccer is the core litmus test for where you exist on the jocko-political continuum."

I heard a lot of fans left with over a minute remaining in the sabres game and couldn't get back in after they score

Two good games in a row by the sens.. this could end fast. I thought the sabres had it in the first. If the first goal had counted and the one off the post gone in :o

Sabres need to stop getting penalties. Those two power-play goals came back to murder them.

To avoid making a separate thread:

In non-NHL related news, Canada wins its 24th World Championship title in ice hockey, sending a lackluster Finland home with the silver medal. Fuck it all.

In all honesty, congratulations on a deserved win, we sucked and lost it fair and square. Starting to play at 10 minutes into the 3rd period from 3-0 behind against a team like Canada is a recipe for losing, but we did get it to 3-2 until Rick Nash sank our hopes with a rather impressive goal. Damn.

HOw much entertaining is that game if Finland's best Forward and Canada's best defenseman (best two defensemen?) aren't wearing the black and orange at the moment ;-).

Rick Nash's goal was one of the most impressive goals I have ever seen in all my years of watching Hockey.

-----

Comments on Ducks-Wings:

-The Brothers Niedermayer strike for another OT winner.
-Niklas Lidstrom fucked up on the Andy MacDonald goal. He did that a few times against Calgary as well.
-The Ducks Special Teams really are special (in this series), they need to get their collective heads out of their asses. All of Detroit's goals have come on them.

Sens take a 3-0 series lead on Buffalo, and outplayed them badly except for the last 5 minutes or so of the game. Great penalty kills by both teams, but let's just say you're not too likely to win a game when you're outshot 32-15 and outchanced something like 17-6. It also doesn't help when the Sabres are 0 for 17 on the powerplay.
