I don't mind that Mara was killed, what I mind is that a hack like Traviss killed her, and in such a lame ass way. Her death written by Zahn or Luceno would have been infinitely better.

Stark: if it's the same poison that was used in the last book, it's incredibly fast-acting. Plus, Vergere wasn't around to save her this time.

Lumiya's death actually sounds pretty good, believe it or not:

I'm told it's brief, brutal, and ends in Shira slipping off the edge of a cliff. She reaches for Luke-- and he grabs her arm, promising to "never let [her] fall"...

And then cuts her head off.

It doesn't lessen my loathing for Luke, but cool. Good on him.

Anywho, whether or not Zahn could write Mara's death to be less lame doesn't mean her death as it stands isn't lame. She could have at least gotten shot, much less lame than poison to the leg.

Apparently, Mara's death comes from a combination of wounds, fatigue and then getting a poison dart. From what I hear, her poisoning in the NJO books required all her strength to survive and she wasn't in a duel at the time.

Yes and that's part of the reason why Mara's death pisses me off. The last time I actually gave a shit about the release of a Star Wars novel was at the height of the NJO. There was conflict and a genuine fear that someone might die with every installment. Now, we've got a contrived rehash of I-III and while I'm somewhat pissed that Mara's dead, I'm more so pissed because Karen Fucking Travis performed the deed.

I guess that's the nature of franchise writing: characters can never die in the middle of something awesome, because the franchise is 'growing' and they'll be needed to sell books later. Thus they usually get killed on the downward slope, when their deaths are dramatically meaningless.

I was more affected by Anakin's death in NJO. They'd set him up to be something special for ages, and then dropped him. After that, I'm not really caring what they do with the rest of them. And you're right, Mara's age makes her a good candidate.

Of course, if we want to be fair about it, age shouldn't matter in the heat of a battle (unless we're talking stamina). Yoda seemed perfectly capable in his older years when he had to be.

Seems to me like the books thus far are a combination rehash of NJO with the movies. Bringing the relative success of the NJO series together with a rehash of Darth Vader seems like an almost desperate move at this point. Killing off another major written character in the middle of the series is very much like "Star by Star" (and I thought Denning did a decent job with that death, at least compared to what I'm hearing here), and seems like a "get a ratings boost".

I certainly won't buy this one in hardcover, if I get it at all.

Would have prefered to see Mara go out in a blaze of glory like Anakin or Ganner Rhysode. So far Jacen has been a pussy, a kick ass no-holds barred fight with Mara might make him an acceptable bad guy. Mara Jade has been way out of character in every book so far so I don't think she's much of a loss and the effects seems to have let Luke find his balls again.

*gag* if that is the truth of it. You can kill major character, but it better be...well in character. Mara has been from day one, an ass kicker to make Luke Skywalker blush. I think that's why he loves her as he does. Even in the NJO books, this trend continues with her ever so stupid...poisoning. She can die, but like Captain Kirk, it shouldnt' be on a silly wooden bridge defending an insignificant planet against an insignificant threat....

Oh wait....that did happen. Grrrrrr.

So exactly why the fuck did KT think it was dramatic to have Jacen kill Mara in some lame-ass way? Why NOT have her go out in a blaze of glory...not to mention instantly sell Jacen as a bad-ass Sith Lord?

He can poison some complete schmuck to show that he's underhanded. KT managed to cheapen both characters, as it is described here. Nice going.
