So, Typhonis and I got into a discussion about memorysticks, and after a bit of websearching we found a nice stick of 1GB 240pin DDR2 for only $36.
So, the question of the hour is this: Will DDR slots accept DDR2 memory?
There's also the question what makes the DDR2 better, will we have to make sure the Pin Number matches to install it, etc. Anyone out there with the answers?

Memory Question: DDR vs DDR2
Nitram, slightly high on cough syrup: Do you know you're beautiful?
Me: Nope, that's why I have you around to tell me.
Nitram: You -are- beautiful. Anyone tries to tell you otherwise kill them.

Nothing. Well technically it can reach higher speeds, but with higher latency and the differences tend to wash out. It's cheaper, though, so that does make it better. There's also the question what makes the DDR2 better
DDR is 168 pin (I think) while DDR2 is 240 pin, so it's a total non starter for trying to install in a DDR slot., will we have to make sure the Pin Number matches to install it, etc. Anyone out there with the answers?

If you're looking for cheap memory, pm me Tevar. My brother just spent months and months worth of cash buying a core 2 duo overclocked to 3 ghz with 4 gigs of ram (also overclocked) and 450 gigs of HD and a geforce 8800 gts 640 all in a shuttle box he made himself. It's getting in the top 93% in 3dmark. Capitalism is truly fucked when he can get a better computer than married people.
Actually if you're looking for a "new" box I might be able to send you the whole old shit. It's just gathering dust. P4 uh something, I think 512 megs of ram, some kind of nvidia video card. Maybe under a hundred bucks, maybe even free. I own half of it so I don't know how it'll fly. I bet he'd take fifty bucks for it, the guy thinks himself king of the world now. The only problem is at that low a price you might not get the hard drive with it: there used to be a 1 gig hard drive in it but it was replaced recently with a brand new 350 gig hard drive and that can't go for cheap. And before anybody else asks, sorry, deal's only good for Tevar. I have no idea how much the shipping would be though.
EDIT: good news, I found the 40 gig hard drive so I got a complete system on my hands. It'd be perfect if it came with an operating system, but my brother destroyed the Windows ME CD and ripped off the cd-key number, the fool, I told him maybe it'd be useful someday. So it'll come with no operating system at all. I can get Windows XP for around 100 cdn from my school, non-crippled OEM version, but I wouldn't spend that kind of money on my piece of shit.

DDR is 184 pin. I was looking to upgrade the memory in my computer and went through the company that makes the motherboard to see if it had any recomendations for compatible memory, thats how I found Crucial Technologies.

DDR2 starts getting a marked improvement over DDR, but not at the 533Mhz level. When you start getting up into the 800 and 1066Mhz area, then yeah, you're seeing a speed increase. It's a lot like the Northwood-Prescott shift in Intel chips a while back. Didn't do anything for performance, did a lot for headroom.
