Some people, I've noticed, seem to think transparisteel (windows) is weaker than durasteel (everything else). This is not true, if we are to believe EU sources by any rate. I'm guessing this "weak windows" theory comes from ROTJ, when the A-Wing crashed through the Executor's window, and destroyed the ship. I believe the the real reason this happened is because it was more dramtic to see the ship smash through a window than the drab, grey hull.
After all, transparisteel is only durasteel compressed a whole, whole lot. It's desribed as being just as strong as durasteel, only more expensive. If so, then it wouldn't have mattered where the A-Wing crashed, because he would have still done similar damage.

You're right as far as the transpairsteel is concerned, but the hull armor wasn't as thick in this place as in other places because of the windows. Look at the ICS pic of the ISD. See how thick the armor of the main hull is. The armor of the bridge is probably thinner, but it's the thinnest in the place were the windows are, only about 20 cm. Otherwise, you'd have to make the bridge windows as thick as the rest of the hull, and you wouldn't see much out of them now would you?

No, I don't think that's it. After all 20cm of transparisteel does not equal 20cm of durasteel. Because they compress a chunk of durasteel, that is resiliant enough to protect them, until it is see through. In effect, it is-possibly-as armored as the rest of the hull, but window-like. After all, that would make a hell of a lot more sense, its better to have no windows than frail ones.
