Space Empires V PBW game?
Moderator: Thanas
People should note that there are problems with the Balance Mod tech tree pdf. I think it's an outdated version.
I'll leave you to find the problems, but I've already found one which changes early game warfare entirely. Nothing cheating or broken, but just something that if overlooked can cause you major pain. I suggest everybody right click on theoretical areas in the game and check for feeders, rather than relying on the pdf.

This seems like the time to mention this then too; I'm going to be away the 29th and 30th (Tuesday and Wednesday of this coming week). I'm fine setting a good Q and just missing it or having somebody run it if they feel like it. I'd just rather not be ambushed on the turn or two that I'll miss.

All right, I'm leaving soon. As I have met no empires nearby, then I have no clue who to nominate. I'm really sorry guys...
I'm going to send my Game Info to Tux, as he is the "Administrator." If you would like to take over my empire for a few turns, (and I don't care who, just dont screw me over worse than the AI...) Just PM him.

Turn timer goes off in 90 minutes, Gups. Might want to get that turn in.

Anybody got a late game SE:V saved game with a rather large fleet I can play with?
I'm trying to work through the fleet and task force formations and the combat simulator is being annoying. I'd rather use a real turn and use real fleets and task forces and see how they array themselves.
A saved game with a really large fleet about to attack a planet would be perfect.

New turn uploaded as a replacement to fix when I accidentally uploaded twice. Pay no attention to the fact that it's a replacement. For the movement and combat logs, look at the first post.

Remember everyone who hasn't done it already, check the box for AI not making changes. In the later game, the AI can put you from first place to dead last in one turn by sending all your attack ships piecemeal to dash themselves against your enemies' (or sometimes your allies') defenses.

Well you're almost dead last shark so it doesn't matter *ducks*.
Score doesn't really matter this early on.
The main thing is how to avoid this in the future. I say make the nag work for the last 4 people, and if possible have it activate 24 hours before and not 12 hours before.
Also when people upload through e-mail they should check. E-mails can die or get eaten. Which means e-mails sucks and people should just use the pbw site. Yeah yeah I know the buttons are close uses java etc, but there's a text based version and if you use IE it gives confirmation dialogues so it's not so bad, free is never bad.

Personally, I hate getting nagged, so that's why I made it that way. Don't really see the benefit of nagging more people than one, either. I suppose the nag time could be extended from 8 hours, though. 24 might be too much, but 12 or 16 could work. What do people think?
Definitely agree on the double-checking, though, especially for e-mailed turns. PBW is down a lot, often for hours at a time.

Nag should be long enough so if someone goes to work or bed and comes back and checks his e-mail, it's not too late. Nagging at 16 hours to the due date is good.
Nagging more than one person is just to make turns go faster. If you nag one person in a 4 player game then nag 4 in a 13 player game. But nagging is kind of stupid later on. It only works early when people don't have to take an hour a turn but it just takes 10 minutes.

Nag changed to last 2 people at the 16 hour mark.

I've decided not to get into the planet trading business at all. The Federation is not in the business of trading its citizens. That means I'll be spread out over a lot of space, but that's not too big a turn off. Consolidating every planet in a few systems means if the systems are taken out, there's no comeback. But I'm still doing migration.

What is the deal on gifting ships so other people can use them?
I'm personally not against it, because it just lets close allies work together. But I can see why people would be pissed, because it might allow people to violate the spirit of the technology trading rule, letting one person focus on researching one thing and someone else other things. But I don't think it really matters, because it's not getting 2x the number of ships with high technology -- it's just having two empires work together.

Well, given that there's a rule about no reverse engineering gifted ships, I'd say gifting ships is okay.brianeyci wrote:What is the deal on gifting ships so other people can use them?

Gifting and analyzing is not just against the spirit of the rules, it's against the letter. Explicitly forbidden. Gifting a ship to someone for them to use against their enemies, however, is A-OK.brianeyci wrote:What is the deal on gifting ships so other people can use them?

Maybe the same situation as gups last turn. I saw kingside on a few times on sdn in the day, and he hasn't done his turn yet, so maybe he thinks he's already uploaded.
Regardless, be a hardass tuxedo, it's the only way to be fair with 13 people . I pmed kingside, someone could try e-mailing him. Let's hope he uploads before, and if not well the universe can't wait.

Warning to all: either the filters are bugged or doing half a turn, saving, and doing half the turn later is bugged when dealing with construction queues. I had my homeworlds to produce colony ships, and when I load last turn's saved game, the filter's empty. I seem to recall the same bug in SE:V 1.0.
But none of the colony ships shit out, and this turn my homeworlds are empty. Also, I know I didn't upload the wrong file, because I made one important change to one colony ship last turn and it went through, so my turn wasn't skipped entirely.
Moral of the story: do your turn all at once, don't save and do half later.

I must be retarded or something, because I cannot get this transport to load population. Its got 600kt of space and no matter WHAT I do, it refuses to pick anybody up. I've tried 'remote pickup' and cargo transfer. I've checked and double checked and this is like the 4th turn in a row where I just can't seem to make this fsking thing work.
How the hell do you get transports to pick up cargo, move somewhere, and drop the shit off?
I thought "hey, remote load population, and then remote drop - oh that should be easy!" Nope, the transport is half way to its destination, without any cargo.
Okay, I'll do like I do in a normal game, cargo transfer; set it to all, choose population, check the log: Ah good it says its ordered are to load population and then move. "Bzzt!" again my transport makes a half trip for nothing.
This is really... really pissing me off.

1. Make sure the planet you're trying to load from has enough population.
2. Click the transport, press backspace. Make sure there are no orders.
3. Press o. Click on the planet. Select the planet, if there's more than one item in the square. Make sure you select the right thing to load from, a planet not a base space yard or anything.
4. That should be it, click move to move after you've finished loading.
If that doesn't work try this.
1. Move transport to planet. Wait until next turn or until the transport is on the planet.
2. Press o when the transport is on the same square as the planet. Load population.
3. Don't move at all.
4. Wait until next turn when the transport's loaded. Then move.
If worst comes to worst try and make a single player simultaneous game and see what exactly's wrong. Colonizers load cargo too, if you do it exactly the same way as you load a colonizer there should be no problem.
EDIT : It may be that remote load and remote drop are executed BEFORE any kind of orders to move at all. In that case, make sure your population transport is on the same square as the planet. Remote load, but DO NOT remote drop. Move to the planet. Wait until the transport is on the planet waiting, then remote drop. Not ideal, but if that's the way SEV handles it, oh well.
