Superman vs. Darth Vader...
Let's say they are on our planet and they're free to use any of their capabilities to win.

Superman wins.
Let see Superman has tremendous strength (cabable of moving planets) heat vision, icy breath, super breath, can fly around the world in under a second, seems to be nearly invulnerable (get's a mild head-ache from a hydrogen bomb), cabable of inter-planetary travel on his own, Etc.
I don't really see how Vader could even harm The Man of Steel, even if he just stands still and let's Vader poke him with the lightsaber. Superman on the other hand can tear Vaders head of his shoulders, crush him in to pulp and scorche the remains with his heat vision.

So ... why the hell do people like Superman exactly? Why don't I just create my own character who has no weaknesses and blink out entire galaxies by clicking his fingers- maybe I'll get a cult comic following with that one too.Sir Sirius wrote:Superman wins.

And yes, superman phanboyz, I do know about the kryptonite.
At a friend's party he played episodes of the REALLY OLD Superman cartoon. Great artwork but boring as fuck.

Kryptonite isnt that much of a weakness anmore for supes if I remember my most recently read supes crossover.
Supes has been on a decline of fan base since the late 70ies his fan base now is a solid core of true believers as stan lee would say. Dc has made attempts to make him human make him more powerful etc but hes still a little to uber.
As for weaknesses I would see how well the force could be manipulated in a magical way supes big weakness has been his inability to stop the nastier magic attacks that arnt defined by natural physics. Unfortunatly short of force storms I dont think the normal force powers would hurt him since they all have an overt RL physics explanation.

Assuming Superman is doing everything he can for the win, he flies up into orbit and starts blasting his heat vision until the area for 1 mile around Vader has been turned into molten slag.
That, or he decides to being weaving, dodging, and punching at .99c. Force speed or not, Vader can't keep up.
That, or Vader decides to send the Imperial Fleet after him in which he flies into the nearest yellow sun, charges up to Our Worlds at War level, then tears though the entire Imperial fleet like he does with Imperiex Probes. Not sure if he'll even need the sun bath.
With Q it's also a curbstomp, in the other direction.

I am grasping the reigns of the universe's carriage, and every morning get up and shout "Giddy up, boy!" You may never grasp the complexities of what I do, but at least have the courtesy to feign something other than slack-jawed oblivion in my presence. Sadly enough Superman books do sell well even though the character is as boring as hell. And one problem with him vs the Imperial starfleet...Superman still needs to breathe(Byrne may be wondering why they don't call this versio0n SIlver Age...but 95% of writers who do Superman do not ignore this one small bit) no matter how much some morons who wrote OWAW want to ignore it...so him fighting the Empire requires him to find planets with oxygen...every 72~96 hours.
As for the contest...Vader could screw with his mind...but as to hurting him...this is much like Superman vs Hulk. Hulk doesn't have the variety nor the range to combat this level of power.

Yeah and when that runs out ?
I mean it's Superman's oddest freaking weakness...he needs to breathe...why?
I mean it's injecting bad science to look cool without trying to understand why the mechanism is there in the first place.
Eh enough ranting...but that is a problem I've had with Byrne...he tried injecting science into a character to make it more vulnerable but added in variable that would make any scienctist scream on what the fuck is he.

Jonh Byrne(in 1985~86) was the writer who rewrote Superman's origins and powers for the modern age, and place constraints that made less sense then it 'just happens' on Superman's powers. I'd rather just have to figure out how much energy is needed then try to somehow firgure out how much Solar energy he must need to produce a 1/10 of his effect, given the size and volume he possess as well as time he's been within the Earth's Sun(another bizarre Silver Age thing Byrne put into the Modern age, and amplified it to some unknown degree...Superman is solar powered by only a specfic colored sun)
One such was the whole he needs to breathe bit to me is like the Solar power bit(sorry by far the most screwed up thing...unless Byrne heard Solar energy and thought it was a catch-phrase)
I mean him going at any Supersonic speed(especially those time he approaches c...such as when he races Flash) wouldn't you thinking breathing would be extraoridinarily detrimental on him somehow...let alone all the time he leaps into the vacuum of space as well.
Seriously depowering him is one thing...trying to give him bizarre constraints is just something writers do because when they need to we can get Superman tales of him losing Solar power because he was underground for too long(don't laugh they have done these types of stories)

Vader mind tricks superman into hiding in a dark closet for a decade, then beats him to death with a stick.

Sadly...wouldn't take a decade.
According to JSA/JLA...a week...at most, and Supes would be drained near totally.
So best guess...a year.
Screw it I say the costume gives him powers and Byrne was off his fuckin bloody rocker.

Vader could simply use telekinesis to slam Superman into various buildings for as long as he cared to. The Doomsday comics showed that, given a sufficient pummeling, Superman will die ... and come back from the dead as if he was Jesus or something.
Also, I find it difficult to believe that Superman could survive if Vader decapitates him.

I figure that Vader's best bet is for Supes to get to close and then nail him with his light saber. Whether it will damage Supes is another question but it might.
By the way, I thought the more recent Superman comics had made it so he doesn't need to breath anymore? Either that or he can hold his breath a lot longer.
I also consider Superman a boring character. The animated series is the version I like best. Other than that I don't mind him in team books like the JLA but his own series are boring. There have been some good one shots with the character but most of those either have to do with his humanity or dealing with the responsibility and limiations of the power he has. Can't do that every week in a comic book (IIRC Supes has 4 books of his own).

And this is a problem for him why? ALL matter within the inner blast radius of a nuke (aka right there by the nuke when it goes off) is reduced to its constituent atoms... unless it's Superman's body!

Which is why I said that it would take an extended period of time. Doomsday showed that Superman can be pummeled to death, and that he bleeds just like everyone else.Sir Sirius wrote:I doubt that Vader can slam Superman around with TK and even if he can the only result will be holes in the buildings + Vader wouls still have to deal with the heat vision.
How would Vader decapitate Superman? The guy can survive nuclear explosions, the sabre won't do it.
As for the lightsaber doing damage, it would at least set his spandex on fire, given that it can melt durasteel in a fairly speedy manner.

You forgot that his spandex was left completely intact after being exposed to the intense gamma rays and heat of a nuclear explosion, but for some reason, Doomsday can tear it by punching him.AWACS wrote:And this is a problem for him why?
