Most egregiously Bad Science movies ever

Post by Crossroads Inc. »

Recently I caught "The Day After Tomarrow" on TV and had forgot just what a wretched piece of poo it was in terms of any resembelance toward real 'Science'

But of course, I am rememebred of some of the many, many other movies that make us simply want to haul when faced with thier take on 'science'

Now many movies do this, Sci-fi especially, but the movies for THIS Thread are for the ones that commit the sin of actually trying to Use science as a central part of the movie, and club the thing lik a baby seal...

At any rate, my vote's going for "TDAT". The weather plunging in a week and ships freezing half way to the dock....

The Core is in a realm of its own when it comes to bad science. It doesn't just have a stupid premise, or a few instances of bad science, the entire script is packed with one idiocy after another. Plus it keeps ramping up, just after you think you've heard the silliest possible misconception, the writers surprise you with something even worse. I literally could not stop laughing the first time I saw The Core. Armageddon and TDAT are merely films with bad science, The Core is the only one to elevate bad science to an art form.

The Core takes that. Utter piece of shit when it comes to science. A fucking underground train-like machine? A nuke? WAT?

The only redeeming thing in the Core is the term unobtanium, which I have heard used by people who have never heard of the movie itself.

Armageddon is surprisingly the most realistic of the films, cause its bad sciences are rather minor. I mean, the basic premise is to fly onto an oncoming asteroid and blow it to fuck. Simple. The others? Less so.

Armageddon got my vote.

We launch two shuttles to have a backup - but we launch them within a few minutes within a few km, so an accident might knock out both.

We have to save weight but still have guns on our meteormobiles (am I in the right movie or was that in another one?)

Any science advisor they had must have ended up as a madman at the end of the shooting - if he survived reading the script ;-)

It was hard not to vote for Armageddon, but The Core takes it.

I haven't seen The Day After Tomarrow.

(Nor have I seen The Day After Tomorrow, for that matter. :P)

TDAT gets my vote. Love the bit where the helicopter freezes in mid air.

Armageddon was bad, but I think tried to steer clear of meddling too much with science and focused on the (rather bad) drama. I couldn't finish watching TDAT.

Haven't seen The Core, it looks too... painful.

Thankfully, I have not seen The Core, nor TDAT. I have seen Armageddon, or parts of it and it was not too bad. But guys, give Relic a go and see if you aren't scarred for life. It's hilarious as comedy, precisely because it tries to be so seriously scientific. The comment from a biologist friend of mine on the supposedly basic equipment in that movie was "And where the fuck can I get THAT?! Gimme already!"

While we're talking about other films, worst line ever I'd give to Jurassic Park. She examines the Triceratops and says the pupils are dilated.

Now, I'm not a doctor, but I would have assumed she'd need a point of reference. Does she know how open a Triceratops' pupils should be?

If I was gonna have a meteormobile, I'd put a fucking gatling gun on it too.

Haven't seen Day after tomorrow but I doubt anything can compare to the notion of "jump starting" 2500km wide ball of metal with a few nukes.

In Plan 9 From Outer Space, an alien declares that sunlight is made up of atoms and can therefore be made to explode. Shortly thereafter, he begins yelling at the humans, calling them "Stupid! Stupid!" with their "stupid minds."

The Core. A lot of movies have bad science. But The Core is just so completely filled with it from beginning to end it's unwatchable.
Though I did find that ozone death ray or whatever the hell that was to be hilarious.

I'm having a hard time choosing between The Core and The Day After Tomorrow: Both definitely butchered science much worse than Armageddon did.

If I were to choose Day After Tomorrow, it would be for that immensely hilarious scene where the guy runs across the corridor with TEH SUPER FROST! following his footstep and then stopping at the door  that was just plain insane and painful to see.
