People, The Day After Tomorrow had dudes being chased by cold. Chased. By. Cold.

uber-Fail.

I'll add my voice to the pile-on. It's clearly The Core. Sucky as the other ones were, The Core just kept returning to its awful premise, and kept hitting you over the head with how horrible it was. Even worse than "outrunning the cold front."

The only redeeming thing in the Core is the term unobtanium, which I have heard used by people who have never heard of the movie itself.
That's because it predates the movie.

Never seen Core or DAT, so I can't vote. Armageddon was, of course, hysterical.

Unobtanium - a Super Substance so named because you can't obtain any
But that term was used well before this movie came out. I first heard it in the mid '80s in reference to the materials required to construct Larry Niven's Ringworld. So I wouldn't give The Core any redemption.

I voted for TDAT, in part because of some measure of sympathy I give one of the Core's scriptwriters (John Rogers) after a long, drawn out argument I had with him on ENWorld.

I've never seen The Core or all of Armageddon. The premise of the former alone though... Damn. Armageddon wins a specia place in my heart for all the astronomy shit it messes up on. And TDAT is just awful. WHERE DID ALL THE HEAT GO?!

All three movies need to be destroyed before too many people are irreprably miseducated. Raping science like that should be as crime akin to treason.

What went on in that argument that you give him sympathy? Did he explain himself or was it simply that he got roasted enough?

No, we should keep The Core to show to students graduating from high school. After seeing it they will be asked to point out any scientific errors they noticed. If the answer is anything other than 'the entire movie was one colossal error' they FAIL and have to go back and retake all their science classes.

I remember a movie called "absolute zero" which was similar to TDAT except worse. The basic premise was the same, except the climate change actually lowered the temperature to absolute zero as the title said.

The Core, for crimes against physics, chemistry, biology, computer science and geology. I'm pretty sure even economics takes a hit there.

No film should be allowed to shit on that many fields and not have super heroes and/or space ships (the shuttle doesn't count).

Huh. I did not know that.

So I guess The Core really doesn't have any redeeming features...

I've not seen The Core and as bad TDAT was, it at least had somewhat of a scientifically valid message. No, Armageddon gets my vote. On top of all of the other utterly retarded shit in that movie, no one sees an asteroid the size of fucking Texas until it's only 18 days away?!?!

I strongly agree. Realizing that you're using silly fake science is okay. I enjoy a great many movies that crap on science, so long as they don't pretend to be believable. I didn't get the impression that The Core was trying to be believable.

I went to see The Core with the UC Davis geology department. It was AWESOME, because we were all laughing at parts that weren't designed to be funny.

My year 11 and 12 physics teacher used to bring in movies for us to watch and pull the piss out of. He brought in a TV miniseries called "Asteroid" one day. Think Armageddon, but with less plot, less action, worse science and no Liv Tyler to keep us visually entertained.

Now my poor wife has to put up with me doing this to every movie we watch. She has made the mistake before of asking me if something in a movie would really happen. She regretted that. :D

A bit of both. That and a tolerance for everyone making mistakes, etc. etc.

Do note that that's a four year old thread and such.

To quote him, though:
John Rogers wrote:All that said -- it's a frikkin' journey to the center of the earth movie. If you're reading and posting on these boards, you pretend to fight orcs in your basement. I'd ask for a little suspension of disbelief. Where we could keep the science real we did, and where we couldn't we bent it rather than break it. The primary difference between our flick and Armageddon is that they assumed you're too dumb to know when they're making up science, and we assume you're smart enough that we have to at least lie to you convincingly.

Yeah, I'd actually forgotten how badly they treated the writer of the Core. It took almost everything he had short of slitting his own wrists to get the networks to not put a WINDSHIELD on the dang thing.

How can the writer of the Core say that they "bent" science rather than "breaking" it, when the entire premise of the film is some stupid shit about the core of the Earth suddenly eliminating all of its angular momentum?

If you want to have crazy-ass subterranean fantasy films with no resemblance to science, you should just go the whole nine yards to CampVille, and have Mole People tunneling under our cities to attack us. Now that would be a fun movie.
