[40k] Imperial Guard vehicle sizes
I know, another 40k thread. I had read in an earlier thread about a scene from one of the books about the Sabbat Crusade where Guard Basilisk's attracted a lightining bolt and were subsequently blown up. The scene also mentioned how a treeline went up in flames.
Now in my mind I'm imagining these gigantic vehicles who's barrels poke out above the canopy of the jungle if they're going to attract a bolt. I figure they've got to be close to a story or two in height just for the chassis, with the barrel making up the rest of the height. Yet looking at modern self-propelled artillery pieces, the chassis doesn't look higher than ten feet or less.
I really don't think Dawn of War would qualify as an accurate representation of size. The look certainly. Wikipedia didn't yield any information and not having the Codex, I figure it's information is fairly accurate. Does anybody have any ideas?

It's about the size of a modern tank, if you want the dimensions, then find a copy of the Imperial Armour books from Forgeworld.

As mentioned, it's not much different in size than any normal real-life vehicle. Guard armor is heavily inspired by WWII vehicles and is in many respects nearly identical, so just look at any WWII SPG.
And for the record, DoW's scale is way out of whack.

From Imperial Armour vols 1, 2:
Leman Russ: hull 7.08m long
Baneblade: hull 13.5m long
Chimera: hull 6.60m long*
Despite the actual miniature being 120mm long compared to the Leman Russ being 116mm long. Maybe the length includes the hull lascannon, or maybe Forgeworld fucked up again.

That's it? 13 meters? That's kinda small for a giant wank tank.

No their not, Baneblades are a Super Heavy Tank and can only be properly produced at a few forgerworlds, although some others will make their own inferior copies.DEATH wrote:Baneblade's are the high end of mass produced, normal tanks.Shroom Man 777 wrote:That's it? 13 meters? They are probably the most mass produced of the super heavies by virtue of being all 'all rounder' in design while others are more specialised towards anti-titan or infantry work.

Baneblades may be called "superheavies", but they are downright tiny next to an Ordinatus or an Imperial command vehicle. They also show up in far greater numbers.
Now, as for what you consider wank... Keep in mind that the humble Leman Russ can fire a shell equivalent to a modern battleship cannon's. And according to the codex, its battle cannon is considered to be less effective against (Imperial or Chaos) armor than its lascannon.
A superheavy tank is meant to take on other armor or even Titans while withstanding the kind of punishment that would kill Leman Russes.
So we're already knee-deep in "wank", although this actually seems to be consistent with the materials technology that the Imperium demonstrates in its ships, hives, and space fortifications.
It's the ordinatuses (?) who are the giant wank tanks. They blow up mountains.

A new intermediate design has been produced as well by the Lucius forgeworld, and presumably the chassis isn't a unique custom build one, because the Imperium just doesn't mass produce that sort of thing, and the Macharius was meant to be a "Baby'Blade"Lost Soal wrote:No their not, Baneblades are a Super Heavy Tank and can only be properly produced at a few forgerworlds, although some others will make their own inferior copies.DEATH wrote:Baneblade's are the high end of mass produced, normal tanks.Shroom Man 777 wrote:That's it? 13 meters? I wish they hadn't nixed the Hellion missile racks for superheavies, they were a cool, if slightly dangerous idea.

They haven't 'nixed' the idea; they just haven't made a model for that one. The Stormblade in IA1 is a different pattern to the old 2nd edition Space Marine-era vehicle.
The Baneblade is about 2x the length and 2x the width of a Leman Russ tank, and substantially taller. They made a remote control 1/6-scale one for Gamesday last year; it barely (with about an inch either side) fitted into a Ford Transit van. There's videos on the internet somewhere, take a look.

Epic Armageddon states that Hellion missile racks were withdrawn, along with the big arse heavy missile that came with them because the missiles tended to all go off at once if the tank took a hit

Yeah, but the Terminator cyclone missile launcher wasn't likely to take out the nearest Titan/Hive City block if it accidentally went offLost Soal wrote:So did the Terminator Cyclone Missle Launcher at one point.white_rabbit wrote:No mate, the " Imperium/Ad-mech" have apparently nixed the ideaandrewgpaul wrote:They haven't 'nixed' the idea; they just haven't made a model for that one. Pah, a city block can be replaced. Those multiple suits of Terminator armour which get obliterated when the missles detonate can't.

Here is a Capitol Imperialis. There's a much better description of one in His Last Command, but at least this is a good picture.fusion wrote:I have a question: does anyone have a pic to either a Imperial command vehicle or an Ordinatus? My Google-fu is weak.
This picture shows an imperial Leviathon. Not quite as big, but still impressive.
I can't quite find a pic of an ordinatus, but one is described (extensively...) in Iron Hands.

the Ghostmaker incident, when 14 basilisks were wiped out by an Eldar-incited warp storm gone out of control, was actually in a jungle, not a forest. The basilisks in question were in a "dry creek bed" when they wre struck by lightning, so they were technically out in open space.
Neverminding that, Basilisks have some pretty effing long barrels (7-9 meters IIRC) plus the height of the chassis itself (another 3-4 meters)
