I was in a meeting with College interns that come help us out during the summer with grunt work and the like. They're quite bright and eager to work and we like having them around. I had to take them out to lunch yesterday and in order to steer the conversation to something less boring than "So how's your first week in a law firm like?" I ask the question "Ok guys, I'm in the market for a new console, help me out by choosing between the XBox360, PS3 and the Wii. Know that I am currently leaning heavily towards the Wii."
Well I got some great discussion going and in the end the consensus was pretty clear cut from the college crowd -
"PS3 is the way to go over all because it might be expensive and there may not be any good games right now but its the best option for longterm gaming. It has the Bluray, the PS2 game catalogue and it will eventually have its own kickass catalogue too. After a year you'll forget you paid $600 for it."
"Xbox 360 is nice but it has too many problems, it overheats, it scratches disks, it freezes on you. It takes months for Microsoft to fix it for you." [Out of 3 kids that owned a 360 two had serious issues with it that required a return and the third said it was not 100% reliable like his roomates' PS3 - Furthermore as an aside when I asserted I had never played Halo in my life it drew wide eyed reactions from the guys as if I said I had never jerked off in my life"]
"Wii is a gimmick really. The controller is cool and its better for little kids if you want to get it for your daughter but as an older gamer you'll get tired of it pretty quick and the games aren't that great."
OK, the young 20somethings have spoken, in particular the college gaming crowd that has sampled all the consoles. What are your thoughts on the consensus from my samlping of 11 college kids?

I never buy a console until it has been out for at least a year. At that point you can see what games are coming down the pipe and what has already been established. So far, PS3 and Wii do not have very competative gaming libraries, and the PS3's exclusive library is growing smaller and smaller by the day. This may change by the end of the year, but we can't say, which is why I like to wait. At the very least you have an idea by January of what games will be coming out that will be ones that you want.
The 360, meanwhile, has had some technical problems, but you have to take some of that with a grain of salt. My 360 hasn't had any problems as of yet, and the store where I bought it offered a simple extension to the warantee for no additional cost in case anything did happen. Additionally, you can walk into a store and look at the upcoming games for all three consoles and see a lot of excitement about several upcoming 360 games, but not so much for PS3, and the Wii still doesn't have much coming for it aside from Smash Brothers and Metroid.
The 360 also has a good selection of Casual games available from XBox live, so that's something to consider.
The PS3 Sims-esque menu system coming soon is interesting, but not enough to warrant buying the system just for that. The Blu-ray addition is nice since Blu-ray is doing well in the format war, but again, I'd wait for that to be decided before plopping down $600.
In the end, it's all about what games you want to play, what games your daughter wants to play, and what is the best fusion of the two.

Praxis? Did he die? I don't see a page of reasons to buy a Wii yet.
I don't know where those guys got "ps3 for long term gaming" from... what exciting series are left there? God of War? Final Fantasy aaaaaaannnnd......errrr
For me it comes down to this:
If you like games with huge budgets, nice graphics and long storylines, especially FPS's. 360.
If you don't care about graphics and the "big names" in the industry and just want to play a damn game thats simple and fun. Wii.
FInal Fantasy/Metal Gear Solid/God of War 2. PS3 (Had to mention them, big fan the series)

The Wii is a lot of fun, and really, even a simple game like ExciteTruck is made so much more engaging by the control scheme. I don't mind gaming on the controller or anything retarded, but I long for Wiimote games to play like you would not believe. It's really a fantastic experience and it's only problem is that it has no fucking games, and the ones it does have are just full of minigames.
Stupid.
The biggest one coming out is Smash, and that uses gamecube controllers. It's fun how they made those compatible though, since that's a good way of extending things. Plus, you can get lots of cheap little games online, and that's fun too. I have Link to the Past on mine, as well as Contra.
So I think the Wii is really a great system as it stands. If people want to bet on long-term system viability, the Wii will stand up just fine, since I can only imagine that the controls will get better and better as makers get more experienced with Wii controls. There's not a fucking doubt the PS3 could be the premier gaming platform of all time if everyone poured their games into it. NOT A DOUBT! But really, it's got such a relatively minor market for games that you can't really expect to convince me it's any more of a 'hardcore gamer's platform' than the 360, which is not onyl capable of gorgeous graphics but a bunch of other stuff, and has a suprisingly dense lineup of games coming out.
The Wii vs PS3 is like debating the merits of pie versus a roth IRA. If you have 600 bucks to spend you could get a Wii and a bunch of shit to buy to play on it, and you should be able to get a lot of fun out of it. But the Wii is a social system, and if you have no friends then the PS3 will do better.
The real question isn't if the Wii is better than the PS3, but if the PS3's cost is justified for non-social gaming compared to the 360.

The nice thing about the Wii is that just about anyone can play it. It's very easy and inuitive: you point at the screen and hit the button, and shit happens. It's a great social device, because even people who have no clue about videogames can play it and do well.
And Stravo, you're in NYC? Go to the Nintendo World Store on 48th by Rockafeller Center. If you get there like a half hour before the store opens, you're guaranteed a Wii; that's how I got mine.

Wii will be good for the same reason that the PS3 may be good: future games. As soon as the 3rd party developpers get their act together, we'll be seeing great games for the Wii. The marketshare is there, so the incentive is there as well.
PS3, on the other hand, may end up with just a few good games by Sony and loyal 3rd parties. With a significantly smaller marketshare, the PS3 might not seem attractive to smaller devs.
As a Wii owner, I can say that you won't regret buying the ~300$ console-with-a-controller-you've-never-played-before, but you might regret the ~700$ PS2-feel-alike. (Assuming a 15% tax) In other words, if you don't like the Wii, you'll be saying "Eh, 300$+ down the hole", instead of kicking yourself over spending 700$+ on a console you don't like.
Yeah.

It's also worth noting that there is a fully compatible PSX emulator and a 80% compatible PS2 emu (can even run MGS3 now ), but ZERO good xbox1 or gamecube emu's. Just something to ponder if you're thinking about the "vast library" of the Ps3 due to backwards compatibility.

So far i've not seen a single game on the Wii that even remotely nakes me interested. Most are almost childishly simple. I like simple things, but i dont like a game so fucking retarded it insults my intelligence. Plus, yeah, i flatly refuse to flail my arms around like a moron for hours to play a game, not when there is a viable alternetive that makes such things all but useless to me.
Right now the PS3 has no games that interest me, but future releases probably will.
As it is, my next console purchase will be a 360. They have a good combination of games, and i see several already i am interested in. The only thing that bothers me with Microsoft is that, and this is true of all three, they arent just GAME systems anymore. They're game systems, they're DVD players, they're mobile Nintendo libraries, etc etc. I long for the days of the PS1 or N64 when a GAME console just played GAMES, period...but for now i'm with the 360. In fact i predict that, unless something changes, i'll most likely be sticking with Microsoft for the foreseeable future.

The PS3 is so totally just the NEO GEO debacle all over again with their horrible pricing. Except unlike the Neo Geo, the PS3 doesn't have any particular stand out titles.

Oh c'mon, flail your arms? Nobody is flailing. I mentioned excitetruck, where you drive your car by holding the Wiimote like a wheel and turning it, which is pretty fun and there's zero flailing involved. That's just a silly criticism, since I haven't played a single Wiigame that forces you to flail. Just encourages it. Observe....
The childish games are a viable criticism though, and that's the Wii's big issue. While there are a few good games that stand out, most of them are either hampered by terrible developer-side support (splinter cell, red steel or whatever that yakuza game was) or are well made but simple (excitetruck, zelda, etc).
Getting the 360 is a very viable option. But saying the Wii is only for kids, for people who want to play NES, or are for the braindead is just kinda goofy and wrong. It'd be like saying the xbox is only for moroic fratboys who want to play the next Halo with slavish devotion. I still think the 360 is the strongest current contender. Fun games, large library, lots of power, and not restricted. The Wii controls are great on games that use them right, but so far they're just minigame collections.

The NEO-GEO was aimed at a niche market since the beginning; i doubt anyone at SNK though about getting a large chunk of the marketshare of videogames.VF5SS wrote:The PS3 is so totally just the NEO GEO debacle all over again with their horrible pricing. anyway, the PS3 is more like a PC-FX for the moment (i have one of those )

Funny how they use the word "gimmick" as if it was a bad thing, when the DS supposedly is the hugest gimmick in the history of gimmicks. If they mean "gimmick" as in "marketing device", then they're absolutely right. Only that device isn't so much just a "kewl little controller" as it is a "very accessible controller to everyone, creating possibilities for new and very intuitive control schemes and new sorts of games". If you think that is a bad thing, well... then you are wrong.
Still, some PSP-touting moron thought it would be cool to call the DS a gimmick, and then other morons said "lol u r rite", and here we are now...

The fact is that most of the major Wii titles simply haven't hit yet. The list is HUGE.
I'll post this for the third time.
Summer games drought. By the end of the year, THEN we'll see about whether it's a gimmick or not.
Honestly, the Wii is my multiplayer platform of choice, but I haven't been enjoying single player that much; not just on the Wii, but single-player gaming in general. XBox 360 for online play, Wii for friends. The person who said Wii is a social gaming machine hit the nail on the head.
Right now, at this minute, XBox 360 is the single-player gaming platform of choice; simply because, you'll spend forty hours on Zelda, twenty hours on Super Paper Mario, and ten hours on Excite Truck and run out of fun single-player games on the Wii. Multiplayer on the Wii is unmatched though, and with the huge upcoming Wii library, we'll see what happens.
I'll post this for the third time.
The same thing happened with the DS. Does anyone remember all the people complaining about how there were no good games for the DS in the first year? Then Mario Kart hit and a slew of awesome titles followed.
With Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Super Mario Strikers Charged, Mario Party 8, Mario & Sonic At The Olympics, Batallion Wars II, Metroid Prime 3, Manhunt 2, Pokemon Battle Revolution, Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition, Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles, Guitar Hero III, an exclusive Tony Hawk game, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, Wii Music, Soul Calibur Legends, Fire Emblem, Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party, and several other major titles all due in 2007, and multiple Final Fantasy titles, a Kirby game, and a ton more games to be announced at E3 '07 due in 2008...
The Wii's going to do fine.
Of all the games I listed there, Guitar Hero III is the only multiplatform game, and Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition is the only port.

I think it's very telling that Wal-Mart and Best Buy in DeKalb both have surplus PS3s, but I have yet to see a Wii in stock at either. They sell out of them within days of getting a shipment. Don't forget, you could get a 360 and a Wii and thus get roughly twice the gaming goodness as a PS3 for close to the same price.

Wii for the wacky games, 360 for the traditional. Seems simple as that.
The visual differences (and really, isn't that all there is?) between a 360 and PS3 is pitiful. Certainly not enough to make up for some pretty fun 360 stuff like Dead Rising, which is a blast. Or their library of downloadables.
As for the Blu-Ray medium.. do we really need games that take up 45 gigs? Wouldn't 99 percent of that be bloat? We do just fine right now on 9 Gig DVDs, since the bottleneck is the rate and cost of creating media, not the storage it's on.
What's the point of buying a 600 dollar console when the only game on it that's any good is an FPS that's pretty much Call of Duty with Space Aliens? Or some clone football game with new graphics that isn't any different mechanically compared to one from 1997?

Wait, what?! "Soul Calibur Legends" is some sort of Wii-sclusive?
Well now here's the best advantage of the Wii: if I get it for that game -- on top of an X360 -- both are only barely more expensive than the PS3 standalone.
$600 for PS3 or $650 for the XWii60? *puts on thinking cap* (I assumed the good, but not best, version of X360) edit: bah, Executor beat me to it, but then I'm a huge Soul Calibur fan; the exclusive on PS2 was nice even if it did have a file-save-destroying bug
edit2: apparently that game is not a full-fledged sequel to any SC fighting game iteration, but a 3rd person action adventure. There's not a good history of fighting games pulling that off.

All we really know is that it's an action-adventure spinoff, focusing on Siegfried, and Wii-exclusive.

Stravo, you have to keep in mind that there is a certain subset of university kids who are, well, status-obsessed twits who always assume that the most expensive thing must be the best thing. I don't know how many of your little interns fall into that category, but I remember guys like that from school. They would buy the most expensive super high-tech toy in any given category that they could, just because it was "the best".
I knew a guy who could regale you for hours about the superiority of his fancy $10,000 electrostatic Martin-Logan speakers, but who was so fucking tone-deaf that he couldn't sing the national anthem (and if you've ever heard the Canadian national anthem, you have to be really bad not to be able to sing it). It's all about finding out what the most expensive thing is, buying it, and then shoving it in everyone's face to remind them of how much money your Daddy sent you to college with. And every one of these guys would have gotten a PS3, because it's the "most advanced", most expensive, and therefore best platform.

Especially not Namco.SPC Brungardt wrote:edit2: apparently that game is not a full-fledged sequel to any SC fighting game iteration, but a 3rd person action adventure. There's not a good history of fighting games pulling that off.
I'm not going to get excited about SCL until I'm sure it's not another "Death by Degrees".
The OP is so strange to me. PS3 has perhaps two or three important games even on the cards (their remaining exclusives). To my mind that means if you buy a PS3 for AU$1000, you're spending that money to play those three games. That's retarded, even if you ARE a fanboy.
The 360 has good games in most genres (except the animated storybook genre), and has several holy-shit-awesome games coming out. Many of them are also on PS3, but 360 is significantly cheaper. I haven't seen anything to suggest the PS3 has more than a marginal advantage graphics-wise. Of course, they're also assholes who haven't released any GH2 songs in almost three months, but hey.
The Wii is currently suffering from a lack of 'normal gamer' games, and some truly lackluster efforts (like Cookin Mama, which is far lamer than the DS version). They have plenty of neat stuff coming, and frankly for all the middle-age and up people I've seen or heard of, Wii Sports is enough reason to buy the console alone. My parents borrow my Wii some weeks ago, and I'm not sure they're ever going to give it back.
The fact that you can buy both a Wii and a 360 for the entry price of a PS3 is pretty damning, I think. Unless you're a rich idiot who just has to have all three (in which case relative merit is meaningless) the 'cool game per console dollar' is lowest on PS3.

Looking at Praxis' future Wii games, now i KNOW i dont need that system. Not one of those games is interesting to me.
Wow, more Metroid and RE games. Cause i didnt get bored with those around RE 3...
And Mario! Looka isa Mario, yay. And Zelda we have already, which along with Metroid and Tony "Old Dude" Hawk creates the ULTIMATE outdated franchise avalanche.
Thank you. You've made my decision far less difficult. I'm buying a 360.
PS3 so far is just too expensive, even though some games for it interest me. I dont have eleventy trillion dollars to spend on a game system right now. Wii just doesnt appeal, at all, to me in terms of games, forget the gimmicky controls the games are just too redundant. I feel like i played every one before just reading the names.
360 looks like my only viable option right now. Unless PS3's price comes down or something AMAZING comes out for the Wii.
