GitS:Solid State Society Movie

Post by LadyTevar »

Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society will be showing on Sci-Fi Channel tonight at 11p EDT. As of this point, I'm not sure if it's a marathon of the series, or a movie. Either way, catch it if you can!

Edit: Zod told me it's a Movie :)

Solid State Society is a movie according to AniDB.net.

It's a continuation of the SAC plotline. It's 'SAC3', in movie form.

Additionally, this airing signifies a return of anime to the Sci Fi Channel for the first time in about...seven years, I think.

Sadly, Manga Entertainment seems to be the only US anime distributor providing content for the new weekly Monday night block.

So for someone who's watching the series from the beginning, would this be a huge spoiler, or one of those "hey, here's a little side adventure that happened along the way"?
'Ai! ai!' wailed Legolas. 'A Balrog! A Balrog is come!'
Gimli stared with wide eyes. 'Durin's Bane!' he cried, and letting his axe fall he covered his face.
'A Balrog,' muttered Gandalf. 'Now I understand.' He faltered and leaned heavily on his staff. 'What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.'

Thanks for the info. I wouldn't mind seing the series as well on Scifi rather than the bland crap on most of the time.

I'd suggest watching the series in its entirety first as the movie seems to hint major plot development which might spoil the events of the second gig.

This is considered GitS: part 3, basically. It will continue things from GitS: 2nd Gig.

This would be a huge spoiler of sorts. There's a lot development in the characters from what they were in the 1st Gig, continued on from the 2nd. It also has new characters which were introduced later in the series.

It is very good though.

Thanks.

In my frustration, I remembered that we have an old VCR and a few good blank tapes lying around. I have promptly hooked them up, and now plan to watch it after work tomorrow.

Normally, I'd just watch it, but I have to be up early tomorrow.

Though Transformers and SAC: SSS on the same day is too damn good to be true. :P

I was a little disappointed when I watched first time, about four months ago, using alternative means of viewing. I was kind of expecting another Mamoru Oshii movie, like the first two movies had been.

And less bassets, too. :P

But I like the movies (though the first was too short and had too much superfluous nudity), while I could never get into the TV series, for a few various reasons.

Man, fuck Mamoru Oshii. Everything he makes is utter shit. Gawd, his shitty directing makes me so angry.

I like the movies too, though I will admit that the first had a silly amount of nudity. Innocence was good because it was essentially a movie about Batou, as opposed to the Major.

I'm sorry, is someone suggesting that robots skiing on the moon isn't awesome? Because that would just be silly.

I liked the first Ghost in the Shell movie. The nudity is supposedly part of the symbolism some how. Not sure how that works but I guess.

The second was so-so. It would have been a bit better movie had it been more tightly plotted instead of the absurd amount of scenes which are pretty pointless story-wise and make the movie seem utterly lethargic.

I'm liking Solid State Society for the same reasons I liked much of SAC itself. It's got a good plot with a fair amount of depth. Yet it doesn't short change things in terms of action, character, or pacing.

If you're not wearing clothes no one can see you? *does mannerism*

I will admit that there were many scenes which just helped to make it longer, but dammit man - it's Batou!

Not all of it made sense. It is based on a Shirow Masamune manga. But all the same, it's not something that really detracted from the movie either.

And I liked the underlying idea behind it. It worked in that respect. It's just the sheer indulgent film-making really hurt the better parts.

Let's see:

1. Plot/conspiracy by high-ranking Japanese officials? Check
2. Puppetering of various bodies? Check
3. Good, solid suspenseful whodunnit? Check
4. Social Commentary on current Japanese society? Check
5. Kickass fight scenes? Check
6. The Major pulling the top airlock off a rampaging mecha to get at the person inside? CHECK

Ok, folks, this is a Ghost In The Shell movie!

Seriously, it's a very good one, not too high on the techo/psycho-babble, a plot that kept up a quick pace, and the surprise twist villian reveal that I never saw coming. Two Thumbs Up.

It was good, but 1:15 AM is way too late at night to figure out WTF was really going on with that villian. Also, I got the feeling that there was some racism going on with the subject of the refugees, but that might have just been the Japanese fear of Gaijin leaking through the translators.
All in all, it was very good, a worth successor to SAC. And the Major's antics did on occasion give me flashbacks to the first movie.
