I was only able to watch 36 minutes before I became too tired and had to go to sleep, but what I saw was AWESOME. I do NOT regret pre-ordering the DVD.

I think they installed the thermal-optical camouflage in the Major's artificial skin just for that reason, e.g., to show her in a "pure" state before she enters combat. Maybe it's because Oshii prefers to make films that are more like dramas. No, but if you read the comic you'd be expecting little else from Ghost in the Shell, because even for Shirow it's epically word-heavy. (It's not quite Luther Arkwright in terms of dense text in a graphic novel, but it's getting there).
I'm not the biggest fan of Oshii, because most of his more recent stuff seems to spend way too long on pretty and atmospheric visuals, and not enough time on having Stuff Happen. (GITS:SAC blended the two very well).
Patlabor was great though.
