Illegal U.S. guns flood Canada

TORONTO -- Rapidly rising numbers of smuggled guns are coming from the U.S. and being sold, flooding black markets with dangerous weapons, according to gun control opponents.

Canada Customs said there was a 50% increase in the number of weapons they seized at Ontario border crossings in 2002, up from the 956 weapons that agents uncovered in 2001.

Gun control critics say this is only a small fraction of what is coming into Canada. "High-calibre pistols, machine-guns, assault rifles, you name it and it is finding its way into Canada, notably Toronto," said Lloyd Graham, 52, a Toronto gun owner and member of the group Preservation of Firearms Ownership.

"Border officials only check about 3% of the people coming into Canada. It is that easy. Just put it in the trunk and off you go."

TRADED FOR DRUGS

Criminal Intelligence Service of Canada studies show that increasingly, firearms are being traded for drugs in the U.S. then smuggled into Canada for resale. "People who are smuggling things are quite successful and they do it to continue their gang activities in (Toronto)," said Jack Wilson of Canadian Unregistered Firearms Association.

"People cry for gun control and it seems like a quick and easy solution but it doesn't work. You have to focus on the criminals and the choice of most criminals is to buy guns off the street illegally."

Gun advocates are urging the government to scrap its registry and pour the money into tighter border controls. "How is registration going to stop (shootings) here?" said Bruce Hutton, founder of the Law-abiding Unregistered Firearms Association. "Having registration legislation will not stop that from happening. More funding for police and border security will help."
