Overlord demo for PC out

Post by Vympel »

Get it from- well, wherever.

Quite enjoyable, IMO. I love the Sauron-from-the-LotR movie look they give to the actual Overlord, and the humor is cool.

Oh, and the game is gorgeous.

While you can kill innocents in Overlord, adding to your "corruption" rating (whatever that is), apparently it's not a good long term strategy, as long term serious evil requires throngs of human supporters.

Just downloaded and tried it a few hours. Fun concept, but preformance was utterly unacceptable, or maybe there was some sort of issues with my machine. Sound and visuals were frequently unsynced, and even though the game(on my machine) looked worse then oblivion, it preformed far worse.

I'm putting this down to issues with my machine, and hopefully will pick up the game when it does come out.

Well it gives me an honest-to-god 'don't play this game' warning because I have a 6600GT, so 'efficiency' obviously isn't a major priority. :)

Xbox demo is also out. The obvious result of sticking Dungeon Keeper and Pikmin in a kitchen blender and setting it on high for five minutes. Game's fun, though the first level was fairly straightforward and didn't give much of a feel for where it might go in the future.

Still, looks like it's worth a purchase.

I'm not sure, actually: the demo makes it seem like a straightforward, inflexible puzzle game. More Dungeon Keeper and less Pikmin (and something interesting to do) would be an improvement.

EDIT - and after it's pissing and moaning about my video card, it runs fine after the shadows are turned off (as usual with my old-ass card). However I didn't get any problems like Ace describes.

But you bought all the TF movie toys after describing them as 'okay', so you've obviously got unlimited money. :)

I haven't followed the development, but I expected something much more freeform than 'push the pillar' 'get more minions' puzzles. It looks like the kind of game that you'd finish in 10 hours and never, ever play again. I'll probably abuse EB's return policy with it, but I doubt I'll finish it before I got bored. In other words, I think 'play the tutorial that is also boring and lame' is a bad approach to demos. If there's fun to be had, show us THAT, not the rigid tutorial.

Looks like my processor doesn't meet the minimum spec.

It warned me that my system doesn't meet the minimum specs when I installed it. I installed and ran it anyway and it was fine.

The game istelf seemed very Pratchett-esque in it's style. It does seem to fall into the cliche of "Evil = being an absolute dickass to everybody," although the gameplay looks like it will discourage that from happening too much.

I don't see how- it cautions you against killing "innocents" (which appear to be humans, for the games purposes- all other races are to be exterminated) for no reason.

If you ignore all the 'rar evil' flavour text from the idiot tutorial guy, you're really no more 'evil' than any Diablo character. You perform meaningless quests to level up, helping group x and killing group y. You smash things to get items.

Face it, he's as evil as LINK.

I'm making allowances for the demo being a tutorial - I assume things get more evil- I hope.

The demo was a pretty terrible example of the game - snipping out the tutorial (that's fucking boring and 15m long) is a stupid way to sell your game. If it becomes open-ended, flexible, or in any way reliant on skill the tutorial has lied to us all! :)

Man, I'm so evil I totally got those Villagers to dance for me. I'm a fucking hardass. Dance you freedom-loving hippies.

Actually no, that wasn't so evil. Kinda annoying! I liked the concept, but c'moooon, let me actually be evil instead of just making it a tounge-in-cheek Sauron spoof. Spree? Bleh! I like the idea of this, but it looks like it's going to be way to based on the gimmick of "You Solve Every Problem By Doing This One Thing" that so many of these games tend to do. The mentor is just as formulaic. Humorous, a little cartoony, over the top... blah! This game looks like it can be totally excellent, but this demo didn't really demonstrate the good parts.

I was really hoping for a little more Dungeon Keeper, a little less Fable. Building up my base would be sweet, but it sounds like it's more-or-less just a run-through of environments in order to unlock the next item to complete the next quest to unlock the next item. I bet it'll be a blast to play on a console, but it seems a little light for a PC release.

From what I've seen, I may buy it. Unfortunately, my computer has barely any space left for games and it'll be a while before I buy my second one (Right now I have one Compaq running Windows XP that both me and my mom use), so no demo for me.

Besides, it would take me six hours. Though, my friend has a 24k modem because only his father works, and only a paper route because his wife is too high off her "homemade herbal tea" to continue her job as a hairdresser. We did some calculations and found that it would take their computer the better part of a week to download.
