Which faction of the Inquisition do you belong in?
I was just leafing through the Inquisitor rule book and I came across the summary fo the factions present in the Holy Orders of The Emperors Inquisition and wondered where would the inhabitants of this venerable board, and so I prepaired a summary for your perusal.
Two main factions that are divided even further. Puritans who believe in following the law to its fullness and Radicals believe that they are free to follow their goals to the end regardless of the results.
Puritans
Thorians.
Believe that it would be possible to bring the Emperor back from death even though the result would rock the Imperium as believer and non-believer fought each other or the potential changes the Emperor might have undergone during his Ascension.
Monodominants.
Believe that the only way that humanity would be able to survive would be to destroy everything else that does not fit their black and white depiction of a God Emperor fearing human.
Amalthians.
Are considered to be the middle ground in the Inquisition as they believe that things are going on in accordance with the God Emperors plan and the Imperium needs to be held in readyness maintaining the Status Quo and destroying anything that might upseat the balence as it stands.
Radicals.
Xanthites.
Believe that the power of chaos could be harnessed without any spiritual or bodily corruption this is the offspring of the Idea that since humanity uses the warp to survive the shoud master it for the good of the Emperor.
Recongregators.
Believe that the Imperium has grown old and stale (bout time SOMEBODY did) and needs to be torn down from within to allow something better to be errected it its place and this is done by manipulating various cults that are steered onto the path that the Inquisitor wants.
Istvaanians.
Believe that humanity has allways been at its strongest when it has been acing an enemy, any enemy and so take their name from the attack that started the Horus Heresy and will even go as far as pit whole worlds against each other to toughen both sides.
This is hardly a complete list but should give the basics on the main factions for you to choose from.

I've read Eisenhorn, I don't remember which specific factions were represented in that but the last two sound stupid to me.
Do the Recongregators actually declare themselves as such to other Inquisitors? Considering the Inquisitorial hackles raised by 'merely' being a known Radical, surely declaring ones goal to be the destruction of the Imperium would be suicide.
And do the Istvaanians actually encourage humans to fight other non-Chaos-tainted humans for no reason other than to 'toughen them up'?
I personally would have to be an Amalthian. Playing with Chaos powers is just too dangerous. It's not like your simply tapping some unused, unconcious power source, you are literally dealing with demons who will try betray you at every opportunity and no matter how good you are you only need to slip up once and your done.

Possibly. There's a short story about one infiltrating a Genestealer cult and causing it to infest and overwhelm an entire planet (He kills the command staff, etc') to cause some "toughening up". I'd probably be a moderate Recongregant, e.g. the Empire desperately needs massive reforms, but tearing it down would just threaten the survival of the human race.

Personally, i think that on that list should include a faction of Inquisitors that see chaos as far more of a threat to mankind than anything else and as such beleive that Mankind needs to work with non chaotic Xenos to put an end to them. And i would not be suprised if someone at GW thinks the same.
As it stands the Imperium needs an overhaul and as such a moderate Recongregator seem the best choice as they are the most practical of the bunch.

Congratulations. You've pretty much described the whole Inquisition. Particularly the Ordo Malleus.Zor wrote:Personally, i think that on that list should include a faction of Inquisitors that see chaos as far more of a threat to mankind than anything else and as such beleive that Mankind needs to work with non chaotic Xenos to put an end to them. Amalthian with Thorian sympathies, I'd think. Faith in the God-Emperor, basically- oh, and purge everything Chaos with fire and the scourge.

I think his emphasis was on the part about having the Inquisition work with non-Chaos Xenos, if need be, thus sapping some of the Imperium's "purity" but also to have the most resources against Chaos. What groups in the Imperium actually have sympathy for the Eldar and the non-openly-malevolent-against-Terra aliens?

Parts of the Ordo Malleus have Eldar connections and have been granted access to the Black Library as a result.

A mixture of Xanthite and Recongregator, and though I'd hate the imperium, I would also hate Chaos a whole lot more. I would be a prime candidate for corruption, on account of my desire to not only destroy the imperium as it stood but also my desire for humanity's mastery of the warp.
Consequentially, I would keep myself surrounded by untouchable bodyguards, the idea being that the warp itself wouldn't get as much of a look-in to my personal goings on and I would rely on others for discrete warpcraft to further my goals, blowing their brains out if they start to turn.
I would also probably have great fun messing with the cults and having them kill one another off. The biggest threat would be Tzeentch and his cults, but hopefully, they'd be dealt with by my approach.

First of all, there's probably nothing really stopping you from being a Thorian who follows the ideas penned out in Goldo's Monodomination. Except, you know, good taste (though Inquisitor Tyrus is a very snappy dresser).General Schatten wrote:Wish there were Thorio-Monodominants...

'Parts' being one guy (Czech or something like that) who once this info was known was hunted down by Ahriman until the Eldar took matters into their own hands and he 'disappeared' after the Eye of Terror campaign.Imperial Overlord wrote:Parts of the Ordo Malleus have Eldar connections and have been granted access to the Black Library as a result.
Draco was also Malleus but he wasn't 'granted access', he broke in and stole a book.
I'm with Ravenor, for most inquisitors radicalism is inevitable, the question is how much good you can do before you go too far.

Unless Slaves to Darkness has been retconned out of existence, the eldar do take some inquisitors there. Draco also saw another inquisitor being lead around the Black Library when he was there.2000AD wrote:'Parts' being one guy (Czech or something like that) who once this info was known was hunted down by Ahriman until the Eldar took matters into their own hands and he 'disappeared' after the Eye of Terror campaign.Imperial Overlord wrote:Parts of the Ordo Malleus have Eldar connections and have been granted access to the Black Library as a result.

Only the poor sucker that had to spend any time with the giant pus bubble, although myself would be a Horusian, one of a splinter of Xanthites that believe that Primarch Horus was a possibility to lead humanity as a great and powerful person that has been granted great chaotic powers.

The C'Tan just want you to have a long, full life, so when you die, they can enjoy you.
The ugly part would be if the Necron managed to do some research on Eldar Wraithbone, making Chaos into just another science.
