I wanted to get all the human/terrestrial powers together to hammer out a rough backstory for Earth. I've sort of tossed out a big religious war in Europe 3 centuries ago, concurrent with a Russian Civil War between Republican and Imperialist factions, both of which use nuclear and biological weapons. There will be other European and Earther powers, and I'd sort of like to see if we can make all the little peices fit. I'm of course totally cool with changing my backstory a bit to better incorporate others.

My only contribution to history is that 'mass disappearances' of entire towns would have happened. It's probably been explained many times over by entirely conventional means, but it turns out they were abducted, and they're coming back.

My guys fled from the wars centuries ago using an experimental drive system that they hoped would get them far enough fast enough for them to avoid the worst of it. Unfortunately, 'experimental' and 'refugee' should never be combined in the same sentence describing a ship, so they had an accident that resulted in the weirdness described in my OOB. The oldest of them remember the troubles back there and have kept the population ready to defend themselves in the event of discovering the origin world and the wars that drove them away.

I'd like to propose that, despite its appearances of becoming an actually workable model for a federal European country, the collapse of the European Union as a viable entity post-Peak Oil sent the Federal Republic of Germany through some economic turmoil became an authoritarian constitutional monarchy, albeit one with a democratically elected lower legislature.

Further that this German Empire, utilizing the lack of centralization in the colonization race for humanity, established their own colonies as Extranational Departments of their country despite any other international regulations by extranational entities such as the ones mentioned on Page 15 of the STGOD thread for any such fripperies as a United Humanity or whatnot, explaining where they run to when the Poles in a twist of irony invade and enforce a puppet government on Germany for the first time ever.

Okay, that's the best rationale I can give for Space Kaiser. Come on, it's fricking awesome. Sensibility takes precedence BEHIND awesome.

As I envisioned, the original inhabitants of the colony sleeper ship to Gliese was the first long-range international colonization effort - scientists, engineers, and former military personnel from many Earth nations were gathered for this research and colonization mission.

(insert odd event here that knocked out communications to sleeper ship, or made the sleeper ship forgotten) happened, causing brief panic amongst the colonists at the silence from their former homeworld. Fragmented signals from that general area weren't encouraging, either.

Believing themselves the last humans alive, the Golden Sky grimly set about pushing their own limits of potential and ability.

Actually, I don't have a puppet government in Germany. My thought on the matter was that Germany was one of the worst-hit nations in the Relgious Wars, and the Poles basically closed their borders to the West. There was actually heavy fighting, especially in the north near the city of Szczicen (Stettin,) where Orthodox Catholic troops from Germany attacked; the resulting back-and-forth campaign ended with Berlin (whose growth had lead to it's outskirts merging with those of Szczicen) in Polish hands by the end of the Religous Wars. Lacking a real Terrestrial German gov't to even talk to, they maintained their occupation there, but left the rest of the country for whatever.

My guys are going to be the descendants of colonists on Mars and other star systems. So I absolutely need some Martian development in the timeline.

To be clear, I don't claim exclusive control of the whole planet (although I'll take that). I just need a chunk of it.

After revolution, China was reborn as an Empire and began to gobble up Asia, Australia and all the small fry around it. Kinda like a bigger Co-Prosperity Sphere.
I am also claiming, as per main thread, the moons around Jupiter.

Africa is ruled by a brain in a jar, who calls himself the Uche and it has several ground to orbit facilitates. He has been ruling since the 2020s, or so he claims. America had a small theocratic psudeo government for around 10-30 years, until a democrat suppressed them. This could happen with the Russian Civil War

Redleader- as for Africa, I've claimed the islands of Sao Tome (to the Poles, Sant Tomas,) as an overseas dependency as a base point for my space elevator. Being the overlord of the Dark Continent, what is your thought on the matter? It would interest you, as Sao Tome is right off the coast of Nigeria...

While I don't maintain a power on Earth, I should note that in the SPEI's backstory Microsoft was demolished in an online/offline combined arms assault by the Open Source community in 2061. Just in case it factors into any backstory on anyone else's end.

The Polish Republic's primary religion is Reformed Catholic, which is a much more moderate and cosmopolitan religion, noted for it's direct opposition to the Anti-muslim pogroms during the Relgious Wars- in fact, it became a seperate church when it refused to join the German Crusades. The religious fanatics in Poland are the Orthodox Catholic and Lutheran and Muslim extremists, who are very much enemies of the state. I've got no fanatics to send, though it would make sense for the religious wars to have extended to the US.

I'm still working on my OOB, but I've got the following key historical events:
Third French Civil War - Internal strife in France boils over into open civil war. Destabilizes region, esp. Spain.
The Last Spanish Civil War - Attributed primarily to the Third French Civil War. Fighting between Basque Country, Catalonia and Spain.
Portugal creates Iberian Federation. New Spain (ruled by Portugese Kings), Catalan, Basque, and Portugal make up this new alliance.

The First Energy War - Major world powers conduct heavy fighting in parts of Africa and the middle east over world's largest cheap oil reserves. Massive loss of life as local populations are outclassed by modern militaries. North Africa and most of the middle east devastated. First world nations eventually succeed at great cost. Middle Eastern and African pipelines to Europe, Asia and North America become lifeline of first world nations. Portugal takes ownership of larges parts of North Africa.
Iberian Federation brings many north african nations into its alliance after the small reserves of these nations are no longer economically viable. Morocco to Liberia join.

The Second Energy Wars - Light crudes phased out in favor of more plentiful natural gas and heavy oils. Russia and Canada enjoy stranglehold on world energy markets. Russo-Canadian Alliance formed, controlling majority of the world's energy supply (via Pipelines between the two). US tries to control key pipelines in Alaska, war breaks out. Catasrophic global war follows.
Iberian Federation remains neutral and largely energy dependant. South America breaks out into civil war, Brazil and Venezuela accepted into the Iberian Alliance during the war after United States shuts down all major pipelines into Central and South America.


In addition to earth, there is also Mars and the moon as possible points of contention.

The Second Energy Wars - Light crudes phased out in favor of more heavy oils found in canada and Scandinavia. Canada, finland, Sweden and Norway enjoy a stranglehold on world energy markets. Canada and the Scandinavian Accord (bad name, oh well!) ally, togather controlling majority of the world's energy supply (via Pipelines between the two). US pressure on Canada and European pressure on Scandinavia leads to major war.
