Should we merge SW vs ST with Sci-fi debates?

Post by ray245 »

I find that this section is well...quite dead, due the fact that star wars has won the vs debates and most scenario has already been considered. So, should we close this or not?

The primary purpose of the website is Star Wars versus Star Trek. It only makes sense that the board has a forum dedicated to it, even if the subject has gotten old for the regulars here.

Even though the war is over, there is still a Trekkie insurgency which won't accept defeat.

We can't just lock the versus forum and say "Mission Accomplished" because "Trek-Qaeda" is still out there

Until the day comes that we have a victory parade in San Fransisco, the debates against the Trekkie insurgency will continue

No, for two reasons.

1. We still get the occasional chew toy.
2. The inactivity of this forum is one more piece of proof that we have moved on while certain rabid stupid assholes continue to obsess over the debate, in contradiction to their claims that we're the obsessive ones.

I've thought about suggesting something like this - the focus of the board's SF section has certainly shifted to general SF as opposed to ST or SW specifically. I was thinking maybe something like this:

Star Wars (no VS)
Star Trek (no VS) --if there's still enough interest
General SF (no VS)
Fantasy (no VS)
Versus board (VS rules apply)

However, that'd do against the purpose of the original board. Question is, do you keep a token dead board just out of principle, or do you cut the waste and move with the times?

A lot of boards move to different software or different venues entirely when the purpose of their boards have been served. The only reason that hasn't happened here is because Mike is a successful man who can afford to keep his own huge bandwidth server up and has the technical skills to run it. Any other community this size would've imploded or splintered into a hundred different morphs, each less than what would've been together and a shadow of the original.

So to me it looks all up to Mike. I'm guessing one day he'll want to change it, but I don't see how that is any of our business. It's not even our business if Mike decides he doesn't want to spend money anymore and closes it. And people are complaining that the Senate is too presumptuous in their power trips? Who are peons to suggest such a huge modification to the site?

So if Ray245 has a suggestion that he thinks will benefit the board, he just has to shut up?

he didn't demand a change, he didn't even say a change should happen. He just brought up the issue, asked if this was a good idea - why are you blowing a fuse over it?

Well maybe I read it a little too harsh, but there are no qualifiers to his post at all, as if the results of the poll were binding.

There's also the fact that the debate has been over for years, and if Mike wanted a change due to that, he would've made it already. It gets staler by the day, but you can only get so stale until it doesn't matter anymore.

Then again maybe you're right. We'll see.

Just because most people can recognize that the entire debate was pretty much over when the ICS ATOC came out (thus why some try to reinterpret the statements about cannon for starwars) it doesnt mean the debate is over. When the starwars TV series comes out expect a lot of activity, unless it is not cannon. On the whole most trekkies still hold to firmly held beliefs - in a way similar to religeon and dont seem to argue as they know the facts are against them *now*. Hoever if there is something even slightly so-so brought out they will try to nitpick it or just plain use red glasses to make it gel with their faith that star trek is more advanced etc.

As such just becuase it is quiet rght now dont believe the fundie trakkies are no longer they are just quietly waiting till they can abuse reality again with insane arguments in order to prove their faith right.

I'd vote no on this, just because despite the severe lack of traffic in recent times, this was the point of Mr. Wong's site to begin with.

Besides, having all the old threads here within easy viewing makes it much more amusing for the random Treknocrat to get the back of everyone's hand.

I don't believe so as the SW vs. ST is the subject of the main site.
Please forgive any idiotic comments, stupid observations, or dumb questions in above post, for I am but a college student with little real world experience.

Given that the latest entry to the apparently we haven't run out of stupid gits who give Trek fans a bad namegallery is less than 8 weeks old, that topic is apparently not quite as dead as it should be, regardless of wether the forum is..
And rhoenix brings up a good point-as long as SWvST is here, all it takes to defeat a point that's been done to death umpteen times before is link to the threads were it was. It makes a nice reference point for latecomers to the debate.
