LucasArts "Full Throttle" on Vista

Post by jegs2 »

Bought Full Throttle for my wife's computer (got it on eBay). Thing is: My wife's new machine runs Vista, and from what I understand it won't run games full-screen. I've got DOSBOX, which ran the FT demo well enough (though without any sound or music), though in a small window. Really enjoyed the game when I first played it years back on my ancient Windows 3.11/DOS system, and would like Sherri to enjoy it in the same manner.

So .... how many DOS game fans out there can lend a brother a hand on the best way to run this puppy on my wife's computer. A backup plan is to install the game on our desktop, which runs on XP.

SCUMM games don't play well with Windows XP and Vista.

That's where ScummVM enters the picture. It's bascially a fan made updated SCUMM engine made to run on multiple platforms, even Windows.

I haven't used it myself, but Full Throttle is mentioned as having no significant issues, so it should be able to run it. Try downloading the Windows version, it's an Open Source program. And it will run in full screen, with optional filters, if that's what you want.

I run DOSBOX on my Mac, it's available for just about every platform.

I haven't yet bothered with Vista (and don't plan to until I positively have to) so no help there I'm afraid.
While this ScummVM thing does absolutely sound like something you might want to try, I got MI1 and 2 to run flawlessly under XP Pro in fullscreen mode using DosBox.
DFend won't run games properly full-screen (as in has a nasty habit on running them in a window the size of the games' resolution and painting the rest of the screen black when you tell it to run fullscreen), but for DosBox itself it was simply a matter of hitting ALT-ENTER to make the window fullscreen.
In fact I just installed Full Throttle, and it runs in fullscreen just fine. So under XP at least you should be set.
'Next time I let Superman take charge, just hit me. Real hard.'
'You're a princess from a society of immortal warriors. I'm a rich kid with issues. Lots of issues.'
'No. No dating for the Batman. It might cut into your brooding time.'
'Tactically we have multiple objectives. So we need to split into teams.'-'Dibs on the Amazon!'
'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'
'You know, for a guy with like 50 different kinds of vision, you sure are blind.'

ScummVM works flawlessly with full throttle. Haven't used it on Vista but I haven't heard about any problems and as it's free there isn't any harm in trying.

Haven't tried FT, but have tried a couple of other games in ScummVM under Vista and it works flawlessly and allows you to apply image filters to remove the extreme blockyness of the original 320*240 resolution (to think it used to be considered high res...). Recommended.

Damn it, I thought you were talking about Full Throttle being re-released on Vista or something.

I wish they'd do that with Crusader: No Remorse and it's sequel (No Regret).

Thanks for the help. Downloaded SCUMM, and it worked great on Vista. It's a shame the game was so short.
