Alpha 1

Post by Hawkwings »

Who is this Alpha 1 character I keep hearing references to in VS discussions regarding fighter pilots? Why is he so good? Or is he the character that the player controls?

Thanks for your eighty-seventh hand summation, there. I liked the punctuation, too!

Alpha One is the callsign for the player in Freespace 2. Due to the mechanics of the game, his wing (and often all allied ships in-theatre) are destroyed, and yet the player is able to complete objectives anyway. It's just an extension of the 'no mission objective ever fails when the player is there' thing: you could just as easily talk about the TIE Fighter guy (and indeed people do, since Stele has novels etc and is one of the greatest non-Jedi pilots in SW history).

Frankly, it's an amusing piece of wank because most people play on default (ie, easy) and the game is SERIOUSLY slanted towards the player. However, regardless of how many attempts a mission takes, they still often boil down to 'Alpha One killed everyone by himself'. :)

Actually, the wankage goes a little further than that. The idea goes that, since Alpha 1 is the player, then he must have all the combined skill of every Freespace player ever, with the skill stacking together.

If I hadn't read this thread, I would have assumed that Alpha One was Isamu Dyson, UN Spacy officer and YF-19 test pilot.
