I am starting to get worried about stages: it seems like Nintendo is more concerned about making the stages change rather than making them interesting, but we'll see.

Yeah, I'm getting the feeling that many of the stages are going to be Battlefield With Background Gimmick X.

They seem so far to be focused on making "tournament legal" stages and avoid things like Poke Floats or Termina Bay, which I think is a shame.

The Lylat stage looks like it'll interact with the environment at least a little bit, and I'm hoping that Halberd turns out better than it seemed in the trailer.

I think making half of the maps 'tournament legal' so that you don't end up having to play on the silly ol' purple platform area that is so goddamn boring would be nice. An interesting, dynamic zone that doesn't kill you (Pokemon Stadium was a great example of a dynamic map that provided changing challenges but never actually shot at you) would be perfect. The rest can be hellish minefields for all I care, but a nice sense of variety would be good. There's such a variety of characters that some are obviously heavily favored on certain maps.

Oh - holy shit - they could just make proper danger levels with an option to turn them off. Like the Lylat level in SSB:M: if you could turn off the IDIOTS shooting at you, that'd be neat without making the game bland. But hey, I *like* the danger, since I'm actually GOOD. ;)

But this is Nintendo, so that will never happen. What, a simple fix to the different approaches to a game?

Pah! Being good doesn't mean you never get shot! Now what would be cool is if the shootings fired at the person who was a) leading or b) hadn't gotten shot, instead of just the guy who happened to be standing there when an off-screen thing shot you.

But if the item-setup area had a toggle for "Area Effects" or something to lower the damage from shots, that'd be fine too. What I never liked was playing a tense match where I was trying to whack someone and my percentage was high--only to be shot offscreen by the Arwing and die. It always felt like someone ran up and slapped my controller, and called it some added challenge.

It is an added challenge, but it's not an evenly dispersed one, as I never did quite figure out how to tell if the shot was coming. Maybe I just need to play that level more often, but it was often annoying. I want more transforming or destructable levels.

No, being good means 'getting shot once in a while isn't enough to ruin your game'. Adaption, you know? :)

But really, the lack of options in Nintendo games is a big problem for me. You'd think turning off the explosions/giant bullets/acid waves/etc would be an obvious place for an option, but no. The Arwings in particular (as you say) could insta-kill you if you were mid-jump, and the ones that come from the back seem to simply fire randomly. My biggest downer would be the bloody acid wave, though: it adds almost nothing to fights (unlike shit like moving racecars or the rotating level) but can do nothing for ages then suddenly repeatedly bounced all the way up and kill everyone. THAT is lame. :)

Super Smash Bros. Tournament Edition

Sadly, this is how my friend forced people to play the game.

^ that's how a lot of people seem to play, according to the other smash bros thread. I personally don't like it that way, but to each his own, I suppose. I just hope they have the stages to support both playstyles.

I'm one of the most anal "no fucking foxjet shooting me" type of people, and I'm more likely to just scowl at the Shiek/Marth players than ban them, and I'd never play on either of those two maps! Too boring! That's a terrible way to play!

I like Final Destination, because it lets me take full advantage of Pichu's Skull Bash in a 4 way. It's also a good place for dueling.

Its also nice for being a cheap bastard with Jiggilypuff's Rollout attack. I never win those matches, but I do make for an interesting variable in the game.

Personally, I'm anxious about the maps. I despised the moronic "tournament" players who insisted on stripping every match down to Final Destination with no items and two Marths. Why the fuck are you playing SSB if you want straight brawls on a flat surface? I honestly don't get it.

I mainly liked Final Destination because if a friend insisted you keep winning because of cheap coincidences, you can turn off items and have a straight up duel with no distractions and rub it in their face.

But moving stages like Mute City were my favorite. Sadly, nobody but me liked them.

The new Mario Kart stage looks like mute city.

People actually played with Marth? Marth and Shiek are pretty much just activating lame-mode, if you ask me. We got a guy around here who plays with Shiek, but nobody gives them any points for winning with them, it's just kinda accepted out of the desire to let people have fun. Marth, however, is unabashedly lame. They're not funny like the other guys, they don't yell stuff like Captain Falcon, and they have very little 'character' to redeem them like Samus. All business. That's not too exciting! Where's the charm? As a hardcore Jigglypuff player, I guess I need to surrender my "Lameass Boring SSBM" crown to some of these other guys. I used to feel bad about complaining that some of the characters were lame... and geez, some people are making lame into a goddamn religion.

It's the sort of thing that makes you want to play with items on.

I mean, I just got Street Fighter Alpha 3, finally from Ebay. It's awesome. I love it. It's super enjoyable and definately what I feel is a quality strategy fighting game. But Smash Brothers, even when you try to play it in a more structured way, is really a social game and is meant to be played in a good-natured sort of way. I find it incredibly odd. I mean, I love to play a bit more 'seriously' in SSBM--without items, limited lives, and ideally, with Stark's Danger Level turned to 0 or 1--but today on Street Fighter I played half of my matches as pink-colored Dan. Dan. The joke character.

These ultra-lamers sound like the Ryu-and-Akuma fanatics who'd never play as Dan Hibiki. It's pretty sad! Not wanting your opponent to kill you with a goddamn Pokeball is one thing. But mutiliating the game to the point where it becomes possibly the worst fighting game ever, just to stroke their hardcore smash brothers wang, is pretty absurd.

Marth became popular I believe because he is second only to Luigi in wave dancing, and can be a fairly cheap edge guarder.

I never bothered with the wavedancing nonsense because my friends were never too serious into it either. I started practicing with Marth on a whim however, and heventually became my one on one character because I got pretty good at using his sweet spot(the tip of the sword) and with air combos wiht him. But in multiperson games I usually opted to Samus because I could never set marth up right in those situations.

Hopefully they do a good version of Big Blue for Brawl. Fighting on top of racing hover cars at the speed of sound? Couldn't be more awesome.

I remember hearing about 3 or 4 months ago that Sonic may make an appearance in SSMB. Has anyone else heard anything in that regard?

Sonic in Smash Bros would = awesome
Marcus Aurelius: ...the Swedish S-tank; the exception is made mostly because the Swedes insisted really hard that it is a tank rather than a tank destroyer or assault gun
Ilya Muromets: And now I have this image of a massive, stern-looking Swede staring down a bunch of military nerds. "It's a tank." "Uh, yes Sir. Please don't hurt us."

Last I heard, Nintendo had recognised the fans wanting Sonic in and said they had entered talks with Sega about it but that it'd be difficult to make happen. Not sure if anything has happened since then, one way or the other.

Yep. As Masami said, Sonic hasn't been confirmed or denied, but you sure wouldn't know it if you asked the GameFAQs forums, where people have flamewars over speculation of characters that may or may not be in.

Though I think it would be incredibly awesome to have Balloon Fighter and a Mii character option for Brawl.

Abraham Lincoln versus Robert Plant versus Mario versus Solid Snake, anyone?

I rather enjoyed Joystiq's image that accompanied their report:

We apologize if this news is just a bit too intense for your Monday morning slump, but we thought you'd like to know that the Princess of Hyrule herself, Zelda, is a playable character in Super Smash Bros Brawl. A completely and utterly unexpected twist to be sure, we're just glad to have had the luxury of sitting down upon receiving this news. The virtual high-fives accounted for, it's time for the community to get down to business -- nitpicking.

Where were you when Fox McCloud's nose changed colors from black to brown? You mean you don't remember? Oh, well then you probably won't even realize that Zelda's hair color appears differently by a few shades. More like some missing highlights, but that hasn't stopped a bunch of folks from flying off the handle over it. We expect your petition by the end of the day.

Well the fact that Sega and Nintendo are making a joint IP game for the DS cannot be a bad sign.
