I wonder when the zombies will attack the base. Well, if we still have our real-world memories, then we understand the need for headshots or decapitation.

The first thing we do with the anvil is use it to make another anvil! :P

This is the best idea I've heard all day. With an anvil and a hammer, you can make almost anything. Another Anvil is a bit tricky though. I suggest a small travel avil for starters, not the big delux model in Kuja's post.

Well, it's actually pretty smart to have a backup anvil just in case, so you don't end up losing the only one you've got due to a freak cave-in.

Time-Date Unknown

They were out of booze. Again. Production was running but it wasn't expected to have a surplus until expansion and a dedicated brewer could be found.

Adrian Laguna frowned. He took a drink from the cave river and threw his fishing line into it again. The waves seemed different. There was a reverberation along the walls, like some huge, vast mining operation but different.

He realized what was going on a few seconds later as Ford Prefect walked by on the bridge.

"Hey, Ford, watch it. The river's going to flood any minute."

"I see." said the artisan as he stooped to drink the water. Adrian pulled up a cave fish and dropped it in his bag. He cast again.

There was a rush of surf that, blocked only by the sealed doors blocking the bridge and the river shore from the rest of the cavern, would have inundated half the fortress.

Adrian wiped the water from his eyes and tried to wring out his soaking beard. He stood ankle deep in water despite having been sitting next to the bridge's edge a second ago.

"Told you so." he said to the bridge.

Ford kept a dignified silence. Adrian turned to smirk at him.

Ford was not there.

HSTRG walked by, trying to stay dry inside the sopping cavern. "Flooded, eh?" he said.

Adrian looked puzzled.

"The river. Thus the wetness." explained the Craftsman.

Adrian continued to look puzzled in other places.

"Did Ford pass by?" he asked after a long pause.

"Nay, not past me." HSTRG blinked and corrected his accent to be more English and less Drunken Scotsman. Dwarvenisms, as they were termed, were becoming more common in most people's speech. "Er, no, he didn't. Maybe he went out towards the dining hall or something."

Adrian looked out over the water.

HSTRG walked away towards the dining hall himself, hoping to arrive as a few coveted jugs of alcohol were produced and not after they were as usual snatched up by horridly sober fortress denizens.

Adrian suddenly, a few seconds after HSTRG left, noticed where Ford had been. A glove was floating on the water, down the river.

Image

That sucks, but it makes sense. Ford was on the bridge when the flood came after all. That glove is over 20 meters away, and the river's got to be a few deep with no shore nearby, just near-sheer walls. Dwarves don't float, either.

What a crappy way to go. Now we need a new stonemason. Why did it have to be of all professions the Stonemason to die?

Adrian sat down and looked at his catch. It had swam away in the flood, so he began to fish again

Behind him, half a minute later, the swearing and cursing form of Ford Prefect, soaked to the brim and wearing a single glove, emerged at a slow walk from the river. He grabbed the side of the bridge, hauled himself onto it, and continued past Adrian.

Side Anecdote: The Minifamine of 1050
Diary of Adrian Laguna
27 Granite, 1050, 3rd Age; Dwarven Calendar. [Mid Autumn].
Gods we're so hungry. The food just ran out a few days ago. Traders came. Nothing to trade. Miners too hungry to work, have no alcohol for their strength. Can't dig craftsdwarf shop, can't make goods. Can't get food so as to make booze to get miners to make craftsdwarf shop work.

Can't think. Have to eat something. Traders have food traders suck hoard food won't trade for food.

Spider in corner of room. Hate spiders.

Hungry. Could take meat from trader. They have guards- axedwarves. Axes can kill.

Kill. Kill spider. Get cat?

Eat cat?

Cat eat spider eat cat? Would that be nutritious as eating cat and spider both?

Fuck it. Eating spider. Cats are Ford's friends. He has hammer and is BAMF awardee from bridge.

9 Timber. 1050, 3rd Age; Dwarven Calendar. 10 days later.
Motherfucker. Started chasing rats. Caught little mouse, dashed brains out. Chewed on raw mouse.

rhoenix pops in to tell me the harvest has come in and that fishery is done.

Finished mouse anyhow.

A famine, eh? Looks like Adrian did alright, though he didn't get to be a hero this time round (which is a pity - I always thought that was rather characterful for the original Palelabor). Good to see we pulled through and are in a position to actually trade. Did our anvil actually arrive, out of morbid curiosity?

Also, this was the BAMFiest dwarf I have on my computer, in celebration of some particularly dwarfy moments. We endure.

12 Timber, 1050, 3rd Age; Dwarven Calendar [Late Autumn]. 3 days later.

Holy shit, we of the Dwarf Fortress take what we said about Adrian Laguna when we called him a lazy unaltruistic asshole back. Apparantly all that time he's been laying about on the shore of the river wasn't wasted.

Let the Quartermaster's records do the speaking.

Current Uneaten Stores of Food
Farming
12 Plump Helmet Mushrooms
Fishing
19 Cave Fish
27 Cave Turtles
32 Cave Crab

Adrian Laguna has provided us with exactly 78 meals.

Combined with Guppyshark's we have enough to last the winter safely and comfortably with a ton to spa-

Fort Population more than doubles.

17 days to Winter.

NEXT TIME, ON DWARF FORTRESS: We show who the new 11 inhabitants of this misbegotten fortress are, exhibit the new rooms the miners made while I was too busy watching Ford Prefect walk along the river bottom, Pirates of the Carribean style, and talk about what happened when the aforementioned Traders arrived.

Note, Ford Prefect and Pick are still civilians, I recruited and demobilized them as the equivalent of a server ping to get them to wake up and go do their jobs.

Dwarven Roll Call

IMMIGRATION WAVE 1- Spaghetti Western Style

The Good
Utsanomiko- Craftsdwarf (Glass, Stone, Clothes)
Lusankya- Farmer, aka Cook
Tasoth- Farmer, aka Brewer

The Bad
Bilateral Rope- Metalsmith
General Schatten- Metalsmith

and the Useless
Grandmaster Jogurt- Mechanic, aka Janitor
Rawtooth- Peasant, aka Furniture Hauler
The Dark- Peasant, aka Manual Labour
The Vortex Empire- Peasant, aka Servant

For those of you who are counting along, you'll note that 2 immigrants are missing. Did they die in an exciting swamp chase?

I wish. I was just counting the goddamn pets too

Bad News- Uts brought his pets, a Piglet and a Dog, with him. Schatten brought a mule.
Good News- If he dies like Spanky we can eat his pets.
Ugly News- If each person eats a meal we have 5 meals worth of food. That means that each of you can eat once every week. Which for dwarves might actually work. Who knows.

Now for a tour of the fortress.

and to make this post more exciting, a somewhat non-canonical story of the past events. As usual, some things may be edited for dramatization.

Side Story
THE TRADERS
Last Week

"Greetings, Dwarves of Idoktekkud!" said the merchant as the two of them strolled on the tour of Palelabor. "I come from Äkilbesmar's King in greetings and bring trade. We have much meat and some fine leather and cloth to trade."

"Ah..." said Pick, the group's designated diplomat (as there was no Forge up, she could not complete the Metalsmithing duties she was supposed to be doing, and with so little wood Master of Cards had lodged a protest that any of the precious material be burnt for Charcoal with which to smelt).

"There's a problem with that," she said. "We don't really have much to trade."

The merchant's face fell. "Surely you have something?"

"The Miner's Union is on strike, so we cannot create a craftsdwarf's room," she stated. "We have 4 wooden barrels we'd be willing to trade, along with as many blocks of stone you can carry. Is that worth anything to you?"

They stopped at the well for a drink.

"No, sorry. Bye then. We'll be packing up and heading out. Nice fortress, though, the Pick is looking very beautiful."

Pick gave the dwarf an odd look.

"I'm not being sarcastic, honestly! It's a complement! Very shapely and nice. Look, you don't have to believe me. The fortress looks good."

"Wait, the fortress? What?"

"Yes, the fortress. Idok. Tekkud. Pointed. Pick."

"Wait."

"Sorry?"

"My name is <<Pick>>, and when you said Pick, I figured you meant me. But if we're speaking Dwarven, how does Pick and Tekkud sound at all alike? There's no possible way I could have misinterpreted my name to be the name of the fortress under those circumstances."

"I don't know. The residents of the colony of Pointedpick should just accept some things without question. Thinking down those lines commonly assumed by fantasy authors is a way down which lies madness and blasphemy."

Pick frowned at the dwarf. She pulled out her blacksmithing instruments from hammerspace.

"Wait, what? Pointedpick? THIS IS PALELABOR!!!!!!!! "

1 Moonstone, 1050, 3rd Age; Dwarven Calendar; 1st Day of Winter

I do not like the looks of the animals. What purpose have they in learning to walk on the bottom of the ponds like Ford Prefect? I think they are up to something.

Image

This... this is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.
Thank you, Lord, Forgefather, for deliverance from our troubles.
Image

All in all, 10 barrels of Dwarven Wine is produced, enough to give each person in the Fortress 2-3 drinking sessions worth.

Food is coming along nicely too, with Lusankya preparing such delicacies as Cave Crab Gruel for our Denizens.

General Schatten wrote:Why do you want me as a metalsmith... remember what happened with the mining?
You assume we keep you as your skills show, and further presume I want you in my fortress near the damn Anvil at all.

Let's put it this way. You and BilateralRope are both good Metalsmiths.

Pick is a good Metal Crafter and Weaponcrafter in addition to those skills. I figure she needs one apprentice to help around, perhaps smelting the Ore while Pick uses the metal bars produced.

So it's short straw long straw as far as which one of you gets stuck with meat shielding us from the hordes instead of working in the shop. And I'm cheating on the random straws on this one here, because I don't trust you anywhere near the Sacred Anvil. :P

Naturally, Schatten, we've decided that you will if possible be the Miner to create, if we find the Lava River, a Lava Forge. It's like a normal forge, but doesn't need Charcoal, and it is about 10x more likely to maim because of random lava monster attacks.

It is also right next to the evil lurking in the heart of the mountain.

Vortex Empire- Servant changed to Animal Trainer.
The Dark- Also given the task of smoothing the walls and floor of the Giant Dining Hall, which should take him a good few years without help. Builds character.
