...Wow. That's really surprising, actually. The most surprising is the songs as ringtones one. I mean, honestly. It's a freaking iPhone, you'd think they could manage to get some decent mp3 stuff on that...Link

Yes! Be an early adopter! Pay $600 for a shitty smartphone! Maybe some of the features EVERY OTHER PHONE HAS will be added later.Max wrote:A few of those issues can be cleared up with a firmware update, which Apple said it intends to do.
I mean honestly, at this point you're paying $600 for a less than bare basics cell phone, an iPod with a fancy interface, wireless web, and youtube.
Whoop dee fucking doo. I was unenthused about the iPhone before. If this shit is true, I can't imagine how anyone would really be excited about it. A modern PDA and cell phone have more functions than the iPhone, save perhaps the supah browsah!
I mean really, that's the only thing the iPhone has going for it as far as I can see. Whoopee, a web browser that doesn't have to cut as many corners as other browsers for handheld devices. It's a nice advancement, but so what? Are you really willing to pay $600 plus monthly fees for unfettered access to the internet?

If by instant messaging you mean SMS then you are mistaken according to the apple web site, also in most pictures featuring the main screen the very first button on the screen is for SMS:Finally Confirmed: What the iPhone Doesn't Have

YouTube is flash-based video, so I assume that you will have at least that kind of flash.

The no MP3 songs as ringtones seems to be the most damning feature it lacks. You can get dozens of basic entry level phones that have this feature, yet somehow the iPhone doesn't?

Geez, even my 2 year old RAZR V3 has games, mms, video, voice dialing, bluetooth, IM, MP3/MIDI ringtones, not that I use any of those features...

I'm really more interested in the PDA/computer-like aspects of it. I really don't care about ringtones (don't use them, I just have a standard phone ring, actually I usually set it to vibrate) or most of those extras; I still use a free phone from Nokia that sucks in every way. It can text and call so I'm happy with it, but I've been wanting a PDA-phone for a while, they just haven't seemed useful enough prior to this (full desktop web browser, PDF support, images shown in email, Google Maps, etc? Sweet).
While some of them are definitely notable shortcomings, a lot of them are also pretty common.
• Songs as Ringtones
This is a common industry scam; they will NOT let you set MP3 files as ringtones on most phones, but instead you have to purchase ringtone versions of those songs. My sister pays an extra $20 a month for "unlimited ringtone downloads" which is the stupidest thing of all time.
This is true of the majority of phones, though I'm sure there are some that don't have this artificial limitation.

90% of the things on that list are handset features that are simply taken for granted. Even the cheap chavphones have most of them.

Okay, this is granted; there are no iPhone games pre-launch. I fully expect we'll see them coming though. However, the majority of cell phone games suck anyway.• Games

This is a shortcoming, definitely. I haven't heard that the iPhone lacks MMS actually. I have a hard time believing it; is the camera only for email then?• Picture messages (MMS)

it's quiet common on Europhone (but i think the iPhone support it; you'll probably have to pay the 5bucks/months to ATT to unlock it (unbelievable for us euro))I've never seen a phone with voice dialing. Is it common?
high quality audio through bluettoh, i doubt anyone gives a fuck except people with cars that support this features.

i won't get the iPhone cause my current cellphone does so much, but there is definetely a market for the iPhone.

Looks like Nokia and Samsung will. Guess this kills the youtube thing though, eah? Please, I beg of thee, find me ONE phone that supports this.• Any flash support
Very, my first cell phone from 2003 had it. I had no use for it, but it was neat. I think people who do the whole hands free thing use it. Of course who would go hands free with an iphone, unless they had some sort of transparent front pocket.I've never seen a phone with voice dialing. Is it common?• Voice recognition or voice dialing
Is this Flash web sites, or Flash-based phone games? I mean, my RAZR has Java, but it can't go on websites and run Java applets, it just runs Java-based phone games.InnocentBystander wrote:Looks like Nokia and Samsung will. I've never seen a phone that can surf to normal web sites and pull up Flash pages. I hope they add that to the iPhone in an update though.

Its been a while since I used flash, but I don't think you'd get one but not the other. Going by that article it looks like macromedia is specifically going with other vendors.Praxis wrote:Is this Flash web sites, or Flash-based phone games? Yes. However, I don't really have to worry about the cost. I am also less concerned with firmware updates every now and then to better the product. A lot of the functions that are missing, I could care less about. The internet speed isn't really an issue, since it has wifi and there are plenty of hotspots around. I don't place much importance on the internet speed aspect..because well, I have a fucking PC for that.Hotfoot wrote:Yes! Be an early adopter! Pay $600 for a shitty smartphone! Seriously, if you don't want it don't get it. Those of us that DO and are willing to shell out the cash for it will. I'm tired of my Treo as it is, and would like something nicer looking with a better interface. The fact my entire library of music will be on it is also a bonus.
Just get a phone that supports loading MP3s over a cable.... my cingular RAZR lets me do that (granted, I'm using moto4lin to do it- I'm not paying motorola extra money for the priveledge (and their software doesn't work on Linux anyway). That 20$ is a ridiculous scam.... (it has to include other data/media right? - supposedly you can use AT&T/Cingular Medianet to access the regular internet using the phone as a modem (although it would go against terms of service))Praxis wrote: • Songs as Ringtones

"Majority" is massively overstating it. There was a brief period when MP3s were cutting edge on phones where the phones could play them in a dedicated utility before MP3 ringtones came into viability.Praxis wrote:• Songs as Ringtones

On downloading ringtones - unless the handset is completely unable to support PC -> handset then you should never have to. I remember when I got my old Nokia 3200 I had to buy a ~$100 cable from Nokia to transmit files. Screw that.
That shit doesn't fly anymore. My N70 came with one in box.

Every other (subsidised) phone I had could use mp3's as ringtones. And with Bluetooth, it's hilariously easy to swap files over...
Though it is common to have those ringtone companies. But that is mostly people who have no idea how to do it otherwise...

I'm not sure about a full desktop web browser, but PDF support and Google Maps have been available for Symbian-based models for quite a while. There is a good reason why Symbian is called an "operating system" - you can actually install third-party programs to it. Besides, without WLAN availability iPhone's special futures are utterly useless. There is a good reason why no one else sells 2G quad-band GSM phones in this price segment. At least Apple stopped calling their toy a smartphone, because it definitely isn't one.Praxis wrote:but I've been wanting a PDA-phone for a while, they just haven't seemed useful enough prior to this (full desktop web browser, PDF support, images shown in email, Google Maps, etc? Really? And here I thought it was called an operating system because it controlled I/O, networking, processes and memory.Oberleutnant wrote:I'm not sure about a full desktop web browser, but PDF support and Google Maps have been available for Symbian-based models for quite a while. The iPod component is "totally useless"? Boy, and here I thought we'd sold 100 million iPods because they were useful to some people. But if Oberleutnant says it on the Internet ...Besides, without WLAN availability iPhone's special futures are utterly useless.
