What the fuck are you blabbering about? Neverminding that, nobody has so much as mentioned Microsoft but you in this thread.ray245 wrote:Here we go again...with people from apple keep on saying they are just the best company out there, and is not evil like microsoft.

He's obviously confusing "operating system" with "platform product".Durandal wrote:Really? [/quote]The iPod component is "totally useless"? Boy, and here I thought we'd sold 100 million iPods because they were useful to some people. But if Oberleutnant says it on the Internet ...Besides, without WLAN availability iPhone's special futures are utterly useless.
Forget the iPod components; did he completely forget that you can still use ALL the iPhone's features via EDGE?
Apparently, AT&T upgraded their EDGE network this morning and everyone is reporting vastly improved speeds.
I was thinking about getting an iPhone - up until May, I had this old Nokia I had gotten back at the end of 2004. However, when I heard Australia wasn't going to support it, I simply got a Nokia E65 (new release, as I understand it) and I'm quite happy with the choice. I don't really need an iPod or an iPhone, I just thought it'd be nice to have both in one.

You didn't. I was simply referring to people defending apple and keep saying the iphone much better than other 3G phone or pocket PC. And, I'm making an general analogy about how I find apple trying to market their goods. Which portray the fact that their products are better and justified by the price comparison…Like the Mac vs PC for example?Durandal wrote:Where exactly did I say any of that, douche bag?ray245 wrote:Here we go again...with people from apple keep on saying they are just the best company out there, and is not evil like microsoft.
And note, no one say the exact phrase, but I feel that apple defenders did some how did speak out their thought, one way or another.

Can I suggest actually addressing specific arguments instead of making up strawmen and sweeping generalizations? It makes you look less like an idiotic douche that doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about.ray245 wrote: You didn't. Can both of you just tell me how it's feasible to surf the net, check your email, watch YouTube, use Google Maps, etc. with ordinary 2G*? Having a built-in iPod in iPhone is convenient (I've never said a bad thing about that), but whatever extraordinary sales a media player has achieved doesn't really correlate with phone business. A mobile phone with ability to play digital media files just isn't nothing new, even if it's an iPod.Praxis wrote:

EDGE? I had never heard of this until now. After briefly browsing the article in Wikipedia, I'll partially concede my earlier point, provided it works sufficiently well in practice with iPhone's aforementioned features. iPhone's maximum data speed via EDGE is reported to be 384 kbit/s, yet according to WikipediaForget the iPod components; did he completely forget that you can still use ALL the iPhone's features via EDGE?
The data rate for this network is 40kbps, similar to a landline dial-up connection.[72] David Pogue of the New York Times found that the EDGE network was "excruciatingly slow," with the iPhone taking as long as 100 seconds to download the Yahoo! home page for the first time.[35] The EDGE network is being boosted from 40kbps to 80kbps to coincide with project launch.[73]
80kbps isn't all that much to write home about, but definitely better than ordinary 2G. Perhaps some of my criticism about iPhone was unwarranted. I'm still interested to see how things work out for Apple in the near-future, before I'm convinced about iPhone.

As was mentioned early, AT&T reportedly updated their EDGE network and, as of last night, people were reportly vastly improved speeds (sustaining a good 25k/sec). While not DSL, it's still very acceptable speeds for browsing (though not great for large file downloads). Assuming those speeds hold true once millions more users are added, I think the EDGE network will be plenty until AT&T finishes their 3G or WiMax network.Oberleutnant wrote: EDGE? As note that the reviewers were using the network before the upgrade, so their 'excruciatingly slow' speeds are hopefully a thing of the past.
Only time will tell, though.
The US is behind much of the world in 3G deployment due to the vast size of the network, mutually incompatible standards (essentially the successors to GSM and CDMA) and historical frequency allocation.ray245 wrote:I thought 3.5G is already out? And 4G phones is only a short matter of time?
4G should complete standardization this year.

Every BlackBerry gets e-mail through EDGE. Seems good enough for them. If you want to do serious surfing, just connect to a WiFi hot spot.Oberleutnant wrote:Can both of you just tell me how it's feasible to surf the net, check your email, watch YouTube, use Google Maps, etc. with ordinary 2G*?

No, but the throngs of people who lined up to buy one correlates to phone business.
Yeah, and? A hard drive music player wasn't anything new when the iPod came out.A mobile phone with ability to play digital media files just isn't nothing new, even if it's an iPod.
That's the theoretical max. In reality, it's very slow. But apparently, AT&T has been seriously upgrading their EDGE network according to reports. People have reported download speeds of around 200 kbps, which isn't bad at all.EDGE? I had never heard of this until now. Uh, no. You said "people from Apple", and unless someone else on this board works there, you were referring to me.ray245 wrote:You didn't. I was simply referring to people defending apple and keep saying the iphone much better than other 3G phone or pocket PC.

Anyways the iPhone is "evil" incarnate since the second Bell Reich (the "new" AT&T) exclusively provides telecommunications service for it

This thing is absolutely fucking amazing. There's just no other way I can put it. When you use it, all that stuff about AT&T, no SDK, etc ... just goes out the window.

Does it violate any agreements that you make on purchase to modify/build a BSD/Linux kernel and run it on an iphone? Is it possible to flash the OS at all or is it locked?no SDK

Played with one last night for an hour or so. Don't know if it is just my fat fingers, but I couldn't use the keyboard worth shit. It's an incredibly sexy design though, and there are some nice features, but I couldn't get over four points:
1) As I mentioned, the keyboard stinks. Damien tells me that isn't the case for him, but it was certainly the case for me, my girlfriend and my girlfriend's dad. Worse the screen itself was totally unresponsive half the time. Totally killed my ability to use the thing.
2) On every other phone in existence that I've used, the phone part is always a single button away. Apple buries it in the main menu and I hate it. It's a phone first dammit!
3) The UI is sexy and flashy, but it doesn't hold a candle to my Blackberry in utility of major functions. This is Apple's first phone though so I'm sure they'll get it right eventually, but for now the UI leaves me scratching my head at times.
4) The EDGE network is slow. Period.
