I may be wildly speculating here, but in TLC it is revealed that the cloning process sets up a resonance between a clone and the original. A clone grown too quickly can't adjust, and suffers from "clone madness." It could be that this resonance interferes with a Force adept's ability to use the Force.

Just a thought: maybe the reason behind Vader's bionic implants (iron lungs and the like) is *not* because SW medical tech couldn't heal him, but instead because the purpose of the implants is to enhance his combat ability (like Robocop). More endurance, resilience, stronger bones (metal frames), and the likes?

Well, I may be wrong.

I believe that to heal him with SW tech, they'd have to clone organs and body parts, and look at the Emperor when he cloned himself, he went through clone bodies really really fast, Vader couldn't have sustained himself on clone organs long at all, he had three choices from now on:

1) give totally to the Dark Side for the purity of hate required for full regeneration, this he could not do

2) Clone replacement parts or an entire new body, this would not have sustained him for long and he'd all the time have to redo the process

3) Get cybernetic replacements to sustain his crippled body

3 was the path chosen obviously.

I think body parts can be cloned in the SW universe look at yer man from Wraith Squadron, he was a loaded doctor and he replaced things like his spleen without needing cybernetics. I remember a distinct quote from him, "I got so furious i had to vent my spleen".

Vaders choice seems to have been to recieve all mechanical replacements.

Ton Phanan was a cyborg. It distinctly talks about him having mechanical parts because he's allergic to bacta.

Also, I agree with the cybernetics being to protect Vader. The same Force Lightning that paralyzes Luke barely slows Vader down. Part of it may be difference in Force capabilities and the fact that Vader's a DarkSider too, but I think the armor may have absorbed some of the force of the attack.

Weren't those clones sabotaged though? And cloning new organs isn't the same as the spirit hopping Palpatine did.

Most likely Vader simply had too many injuries to replace them all. He's a wreck and it would have meant replacing half his body. He might not have survived losing all the cyberntics.

Really now? Never heard of any of that. My experience with SF medics is to spray somebody with those little hypo things.

However I think Vaders damage was a little more extensive than lungs. (From EU sources)He did fall in a pit of lava after all.
Picard had his forearm and pieces of his skull removed (as well as several other body parts IIRC) when the borg assimilated him, turning him into Locutus. If you look at his body in the episode directly after "Best of Both Worlds, part 2", notice that parts of his body do not match his normal skin color. This indicates that Crusher replaced these parts with cloned tissue.

Why did Luke opt for a Mechanical Hand then?

Or cloning might have not been viable at the time. Keep in mind that the rebels didn't exactly have the best medical technology available. (which is completely understandable considering what they were facing)

Maybe he got used to it? To be honest, I'd love for George to give some kind of explanation on this topic. Not saying you're wrong or anything, its just that I'd like to have some kind of definite answer.

Or he kept it as a reminder of how close to becoming like his father he was in the Emperor's throne room.

Even cloned tissue would still have to be grafted onto the recipient. It's entirely possible that Vader's body is so battered and scarred that the trauma of having his mechanical parts replaced with cloned organs would kill him. Even if it's intended to help you, surgery still represents trauma to the body. It also might not be possible to get the nerves to reconnect correctly if there's been too much time since the injury was sustained. Note that bacta immersion is not a perfect healing method: you can see the scars on Luke's face from his mauling (no pun intended) by the Wampa.
