Hard drive shorted out

Post by Dominus Atheos »

This piece.

What is it? And if I go buy a new one, can I solder it back on myself?

If not, how can I recover my data?

Edit: I should probably mention, that picture is of an undamaged HDD.

Looks like a SMT resistor, but it could be a capacitor, and I can't tell which value it is. Best bet to recover the data: get a HDD of the same exact type, and transplant the circuit board.

You often need to match the part numbers, which can be a royal pain.

So what's the best way too get my data off of it? I found the same model for sale in several places, but the part numbers don't match.

No more then $500. I already checked out those data recovery services, and they cost upwards of $2000.

It's the drive that I store everything I download off the internet. If I tried really really hard, I could probably replace everything on there, but it was a 500GB drive, and it was pretty much full, so it would take a long time to replace.

You're probably screwed, to be frank.
