Leaning back from his desk for a moment, Isaac K. Andrews, programming chief for TNC’s entire infonet broadcast service let out an exhausted sigh. Looking up at the chronometer mounted on the front wall of his office, he was both unsurprised and mildly disgusted that the stacks of datapads and realms of flimsi-sheet mounded on his desk almost obscured its plain face. Isaac was not a lazy or dissatisfied man; he loved his chosen profession, and had clawed his way to where he was today from the assistant of some, pampered twerp local-bureau reporter by sheer force of will and ceaseless drive. Still, there was only so much work a man could take, especially just after coming back from vacation. As he scanned a 62-page schedule printout of one of TNC’s main competitors, one of the dozens he was supposed to simultaneously exploit and outdo, the thought of spending another week freezing his butt off and watching his bratty, spoiled grandchildren ski past him at Olympus Mons on Mars didn’t seem half bad.
Pushing the schedule away, he jabbed one of the buttons inlaid on his desk. “Sheila?”
“Yes, Mr. Andrews?” the voice of his secretary sounded from hidden speakers. Her voice was sweet and calm, but Isaac knew that she was drowning in as much paperwork was he was. Good old Sheila.
“How meetings do I have scheduled with the department heads today?”
“Six, sir.”
Isaac grimaced. “Six?”
“Six,” the voice confirmed. “Should I reschedule a few of them?”
“No, I’ve got to make sure that everybody knows what the hell they’re doing. We didn’t report on that freighter incident at all until half the galaxy already knew about it, just because I wasn’t here crack the whip over Foreign Affairs.”
“Yes, sir. And you have a lunch consult with the board of directors as well today.”
“Great,” Isaac said tiredly. “Anything else I’m forgetting about?”
“There’s just the weekly programming approval this evening… oh, and Mr. Fredrick Jenkins is here to see you, sir. Should I send him in?”
Isaac frowned again. Jenkins was the lead affiliate coordinator for the Galactic North. He had been utterly swamped with reports and correspondent deployments since someone tried to blow up the NGTO’s headquarters. As far as Isaac new, he hadn’t been out of his office in a week.
“Let’s see him.”
A few moments later, the office door swung open and a tall, slightly stocky man strode earnestly in. He was the picture of exhaustion; his clothes were disheveled and stained, his eyes were so swollen and red from rubbing that they were barely open, and his normally clean-shaven chin looked as though someone had stapled Velcro to it. Still, he moved with purpose, and clutched a datapad firmly in one hand.
“What have you got for me, Jenkins?” Isaac asked, leaning forward.
The dark-skinned man handed the pad to his superior. “This just came in from our CSS affiliate on New Indochina. Apparently someone bypassed the local communication net and beamed it straight into the producer’s office. No one there has any idea where it’s from, and tech guys don’t even recognize the kind of scope they used to film it.”
“What’s in it?” Isaac asked. “With this whole terrorist thing in NYC, I don’t have enough free time to watch unknown messages from unnamed sources.”
A strange looked passed over Jenkins’ tired face. “You should really look at it yourself, chief. After all, it was addressed to you.”
“To me?” Isaac stared at the other man’s serious visage for a moment, and then punched up the video file stored within the pad. A black orb defined by two small, white dots appeared on the darkened screen, and then a face rather unlike any he had ever seen resolved before him.
“Greetings, Isaac K. Andrews. I am known as the Emissary. I have a message your corporation may be interested in acquiring…”

Anton Warshawski, Minister of State for the Polish Republic, wiped sweat from his brow. The morning review of the troops on their way to the muster-fields had been exhausting. Fortunately, he had something to look forwards to.
"Mr. Minister, your 1:20 is here."
"Send him in, Ana."
Patrick Eizer strode into the office. Anton rose and took his hand warmly.
"Welcome to Warsaw, Patrick. I assume this call isn't merely social..."

“The Kiroter'nah Emissary will be arriving shortly Master-Wizard. I must ask Master, with tensions rising with the NTGO and the Central Powers, why go through with this meeting?” Evoker Erin had been growing uneasy with the potential war, the fact that she was part of the Isolationist faction in the military certainly didn’t increase her support of this meeting. “It could be taken as siding with the NTGO by the other powers.”
The commander of the exploratory fleet turned away from the Evoker and looked out the widow towards the outpost world. “I’m aware of that possibility Erin. But this was arranged before this conflict grew into its current state and most importantly the ‘Angels’ still wish the meet with them.” Master-Wizard Theodore Logan’s voice took on a reverent tone when he spoke of the ‘Angels’ “If this conflict continues to escalate, We’ll be drawn into it whether we like it or not. There was quite the reception committee for the Kiroter'nah. One Heavy Cruiser, two Cruisers, three Light Cruisers and two point defense Destroyers and one EW Destroyer. “That’s a Kiroter'nah Destroyer? Seems kinda big for a mere destroyer” Erin had an incredulous look on her face. The Master-Wizard smirked.
“Kiroter'nah Destroyer ‘Insight’ This is Master-Wizard Logan aboard the Excellence. The Committee and the ‘Angels’ are waiting to meet you at the space port at the outpost below. We shall provide security for this conference. We are transmitting a flight plan for your shuttle to follow to the surface. Excellence out.”

Planet Side
Waiting at the space port were two Humans In blue robes, and four ‘Angels’ They were similar in appearance to the earth Heron. But a full foot taller then the humans present. Their feathers were the color of gold, except the one in the middle which was Blue with white feathers on her breast and under her wings. The blue ‘Angel’ stepped forward and spoke in the human language, though it sounded like a parrot speaking.
“Greeting representatives of the Kiroter'nah Overflock. We welcome you to the Stellar Dominion. We hope your journey here was pleasant”

Moving back into the room, Alraszi looks about before moving over to Archon Brea and saying, "Ah, Archon, I apologize for my absence, I was notified of several breaking news items that demanded my full attention. It seems that the trouble brewing between the NGTO, the Heralds, and the Coalition nations guaranteeing the independence of the Heralds has just reached a turning point. It would seem, or so my sources on Earth tell me, that a third party has all but declared war on Poland by opening fire in orbit, making that incident between the Hegemons and the Kiroter'nah seem like a spat involving firecrackers. It could blow over, but from what I understand, the offending party caused the incident due to their own pig-headed belligerence. There is also now talk of a terrorist attack against a Herald ambassador."
"This leaves my people in between several rocks and hard places. Morally, we find the NGTOs casus belli suspicious and we do not wish to undertake such a rash act as war unless there is airtight proof. On the other hand, the Herald diplomatic overtures have been... undiplomatic to put it diplomatically and they could become dangerous in the future. Additionally, the NGTO, as large as it is and in close proximity to us, would make a poor enemy to have. That said, I would not be a politician if I did not say that the breaking of the back of the NGTO could be beneficial to us.
"All that said, we also have some treaties with the Grand Republic of the Sky Bear that we must look carefully at. Have you seen the delegates from there recent?"

Earth - Portuguese North Africa
In-Guezzam, Southern Algeria
From the 72nd floor the view was amazing. The riots, which had started in the slums of Lower In-Guezzam had made it dangerously close to the center of the city. Police, National Guard, Army and even marines had been called upon to put a stop to the riots. The Camera panned to the crowds below, Portuguese tanks, using their shields as riot barriers slowly moved down the streets in rows, forcing the angry crowds away from the city center. The riot shields shimmered as rocks and bottles were constantly being hurled at them. In the distance there was fire, as the mobs spread north out of the city and into the residential suburbs of In-Guezzam. The sky was unusually empty, as a group of Frigates from the Reserve Fleet had moved down into the atmosphere to enforce a no-fly zone around the city.
"Live from In-Guezzam, where just hours ago riots broke out over Portuguese support of the Coalition of Nations." Though he wasn’t on camera, the reporter was obviously shaken. There hadn’t been a riot in Portuguese territory in his lifetime, most especially not in North Africa. "Off to the distance you can see smoke, reports are coming in that people from south of the TGA border have crossed over and are looting suburban homes. And we’re getting reports in now of similar rioting happening in at least two other cities along the Portuguese-TGA border."
Earth – Lisbon
State Building - Office of the Emperor Elect
The Emperor-Elect looked over the report again; in front of him were three members of his cabinet, another four were shimmering holographic busts floating in the center of the room. "This situation is getting out of control." the Emperor-Elect looked down at his report once more. "This is simply unacceptable; we have to put a stop to these miscreants. Give me options."
"Well, sir, First and Second combat group have already been dispatched, along with their entire contingent of marines; however I do not believe they have the manpower. There are reports of more riots along the African border." The minister of the Navy’s holographic bust shimmered,
"I would like to point out," next came the intelligence minister, "that this situation could get a lot worse. The TGA’s official position may be against war, but they could use this situation to their advantage. If they start arming these mobs this mess could turn ugly very fast."
The Emperor-Elect sat for a minute before replying, "We cannot let this situation get anymore out of hand. Begin mobilizing as many reserve divisions as you need to put a stop to this, and make sure we can keep order for the duration of the Peace Talks."
The Portuguese Sol and Reserve Fleet are now on station around Earth. Portugal is mobilizing a serious number of reserve divisions to assist with quelling riots along the North African border.

T-minus five minuts to broadcast.
Since it's formation almost 200 years ago, the UISC had ruled mostly as an open, majority rules Council. The people elected their delegates, the delegates voted, and majority ruled. There was a President, a Single leader elected once after 6 years. But the post was largely ceremonial. A figurehead as it was. However, the position had one overriding power. Only the President could ratify articles of war.
Currently, the job of President had been in the hands of one "Jonathon Andrews" a guarded, wise, and aged leader. It was a bit of a public secret that he was a "Spacer" A sapient from an unknown homeworld of an unknown species. "Spacers" had come and gone through ought UISC history. Often they we're explores from civilization that had yet to expand into this part of space.
"Jonathon" had called himself an 'Umbrian' and professed little of who his people we're. How he ever got to be President was a bit of a mystery. It was strange that most of the UISC populace always seemed to 'forget' the election, as if the date slipped their minds.
Needless to say, the President had ruled for well over 6 years, and no one seemed to notice. Now however events had reached a head, events that required him to step out of the shadows, and formally address the whole of the UISC, every planet and beyond. Indeed, the whole quadrant would surely be listening in.
"We interrupt your regularly scheduled program for a speech from the President of the UISC, Jonathon Andrews."
"Gathered races of the UISC, for over 200years our peoples have lived in peace together. Quatoni with Tejlini, Qwintoni with Octona, Trathalan with Concearian. Together we have been one. Within The Sector we have been safe, we have been secure. But time changes what we are.
Outside The Sector, out side our space, the Galaxy marches onwards. Races, peoples, worlds move and whirl. They meat, they clash, and invariably, they go to war.
In my time here, I have done all that I can to maintain peace and Freedom between us. When the UISC Council sighed as part of the NGTO, I firmly believed that by doing so, it would be a step that would further enforce peace between not only us, but also our closest neighbours...

"A curious Speech Sir, I currently Estimate that there is a 40% to 47% chance of him declaring outright war before the end.. Excuse me for asking, but shouldn't you know the outcome?" RUDI smirked...
"I write speeches for many people Univ, but not for him. Oh I tried, but he is an interesting Organic, I tempted him with all manors of items, yet he has always remained outside my grasp. A shame really, I oft dream of the work we could have done together.
"Of course Sir,"

"...As I have said before, the incident regarding the alien race known as "The Harolds" has been an attack on the very core of our Freedoms and the security of the UISC. Under normal terms, and by our membership in the NGTO, we would gladly and Willingly Pledge ourselves, our ships, and our people to the Eradication of such a threat.
Let us no longer mince words between neither us nor the peoples of the Sol System!
((mummers from the audience…))
“It is clear to me, to all of us in the council, that supposed outrage and moral indignation is nothing more than fear for the NGTO as a whole! Let us not, to use an Earth phrase “Beat around the bush” The Harolds are a race that has a single, terrifying purpose!
The mine their planets to the core! They consume all resources to the bone! The build ceaselessly for the sole endeavour of Revenge! Nothing more nothing less. Their race was once defeated... no, “Insulted” by a nigh Godlike race ages ago, and for this one insult to them, they have bent their minds, their wills, their very Soul to nothing, save the single goal of ‘taking down’ these alien race!
((The audience spoke more as the Presidents voice grew higher, clear anger in his words))
“ Again! I say to those of the Sol System and their allies, it is not concern or ‘mercy’ that they defend these callous, single-minded machines, but FEAR! Fear that the combined forces of the NGTO could come down upon them next!
((by now, the audience began to clamour, some of them to cheer, cries of “HERE HERE!” and claps from mostly Qwintoni, Tejlini and Quatonian delegates.
“For as I have said! The attack upon us should and indeed constitute an act of WAR!” … IF, it is true…”
((Gasps now, a sudden hush sweeping through the audience))
“It has come to my attention, that the suggestion of a single, orchestrated event involving covert agents within the UISC is a shameful possibility! That the very reason for war itself may be built upon lies, lies perpetuated by members of the NGTO!
Now, As I have said, I find The Harolds loathsome, vile, and a force that seems bent on either absorbing other races, or simply snuffing them out. That aside, I shall NOT condemn this Council and it’s people needlessly to War!”
((Shouting now, howls of commotion from all delegates))
SILANCE!!!
It seems that the Nations of Sol have called for an investigation of these events. Let them investigate!!! Let the look, for, if the events at Telos, are indeed a lie, are indeed a fabrication, then I shall not spare a soul involved!
But… Let this be known as well.. If, in the increasing chaos and anger at Sol, if the Harold’s seek to use this confusion for their own goals, if they seek to turn forces on US! Against Us, and towards War, then Best be warned!”
((Wth that, the president stormed from the stage, the screen cutting away as the Council howled in disgust and cries of unrest. ))

“You ask this of me? I believe the words speak for themselves. If the incident was truthful, there shall be war, and if it is a fabrication, then war shall surely come to the UISC.”

"Univ?"
"Yes Sir?"
"Why have I suddenly lost track of a Decommissioned Cargo barge near the Kol system?"
"I don't know sir..."

UISC Main Council Hall

((Wth that, the president stormed from the stage, the screen cutting away as the Council howled in disgust and cries of unrest. ))

“Tell me Madam, what did you think?”
“You ask this of me? I believe the words speak for themselves. If the incident was truthful, there shall be war, and if it is a fabrication, then war shall surely come to the UISC.”
“Indeed so, I am more convinced than ever our decision is just… Come, we have a long road ahead”

Tzi's beady eyes blinked, and his head craned back and to the side, the amazingly unexpected offer giving the Hadrosaur pause. Coalition of Nations
Earth
Envoy Zegular Kesreg once again took the podium and began to address the gathered delegates from across the stars.
"The President of the UISC gave a speech recently where he called for an investigation into the events surrounding the supposed Herald attack on Nephilim space. While I am pleased that, unlike other NGTO leaders, he has stopped long enough to question why his block is headed towards war at a breakneck speed, I think we already have ample information to dismiss the NGTO's claims of a Herald attack out of hand.
"Let us look at what the NGTO has said about the incident in this very hall. Envoy Cahaan'nol from the Overflock was the first to inform this Coalition about the alleged attack. He reported that a Herald probe that he claims was in orbit over a UISC planet for weeks had purposefully decelerated and attempted to crash itself into a NGTO diplomatic hall, but was destroyed by a Chamara ship before impact. Soon after, a number of Nephilim outposts were destroyed by unknown ships. Fearing the worst, the NGTO activated several defense treaties and assembled an armada in Nephilim space.
"Already, we can see a number of problems with the story. Why would the Heralds, as a build up to an invasion, drop a probe on a UISC planet and then destroy outposts in Nephilim space? And once it became clear that the Heralds were not going to invade, why didn't the NGTO armada disperse? It is still there, even now, and only serves to heighten tensions and make the situation even more deadly and dangerous.
"This is not even addressing why the Heralds would seek a war with the NGTO when they would be outnumbered 7 to 1. Yes, the NGTO claims that the machines are xenocidal, but surely even they will agree that the machines are not suicidal? The only way an aggressive war between the Heralds alone and the NGTO would end is in the Heralds eradication.
"So, we already have a very shaky story even before the Heralds have a chance to respond, which they promptly do. They have proved to this Coalition, and the NGTO has not rebutted this fact, that the probe that that Envoy Cahaan'nol claimed was in orbit over the UISC world was in fact in deep space. It is not possible for the probe to get from where it sent its last transmission to the UISC planet. Cahaan'nol was either lying about the fact that the probe was in orbit around the UISC planet, and that it proceeded to crash into it, or we are talking about two different objects. Either way, the Heralds are not responsible.
"Now, remember gentlebeings, the only reason the NGTO had to suspect the Heralds in the destruction of the Nephilim outposts was the probe incident. Now that we know that it either did not happen, or worse, was fabricated by members of the NGTO, there is no reason to suspect them of anything.
"Nothing that I have said here has been disputed by any member of the NGTO, despite the fact that weeks have passed. They have not presented any evidence that the Heralds were responsible for the attack on the Nephilim outposts. They have remained tight lipped, and have not even reacted to the outpouring of international support for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
"Contrast this with the behavior of the Heralds, who, though they have been less then, ah, tactful, in some ways, have still been open and honest with this Coalition. They have, from the beginning, provided data files on the probe, and shown decisive evidence that it could not be where the NGTO said it was. Their ambassador has reacted to the childish fears of some members of this Coalition that his design was 'too warlike' to be a good envoy and arranged for another to take his place here. And he risked his own life saving the lives of women and children during a terrorist attack in the United States.
"I think it is more than clear that the NGTO have either abused this incident, or worse, manufactured it, as an excuse to eradicate the Heralds of Xylyx. Still, since some nations remain unconvinced, I propose that we honor the UISC President's request appoint an investigatory party that will finally get to the bottom of the matter. The Kingdom of Isdenestilom is more than willing to commit an engineering party to analyze the wreckage of the outposts, and see what caused there destruction and whether they have been tampered with.
"Furthermore, I call upon the NGTO to prove me wrong in my judgment by taking the first step in deescalating this conflict. Disperse the fleet that you have built up in Nephilim space. It will go far in convincing us that you are, as you claim, are only acting defensively, and it will help keep this situation from exploding into interstellar war.
"I hope that both of my proposals are adopted, and that we find a way to maintain peace in this region of space."
With that, Zegular Kesreg retook his seat.

"Chesska, wake up, can you hearr me..."
Chesska mewls in pain as she cracks her eyes open, with her and her sisters having their psychic perceptions at full gain on the league of thought ship when that mental message was sent the pain that lingers when she regained consciousness feels like bush rats burrowing into her brain. The feline psycher looks up into Gess's face and nods painfully, eyes slitted against the glare of the light as on top of the aforementioned affliction the drugs that fuelled her psychic high have burned out of her system, leaving things depressingly silent outside her mind.
"what happened Chesska?" Gess smiles a little seeing her charge is at least conscious now, squatting next to the bed.
Chesska starts to explain "They were the league of thought, psycherrs more powerrful than any of us, one of therre number did an accident and killed some humans as they left. The polish came afterr them, demanded theirr surrender, even after they gave the polish the one responsible. Then the polish killed them." Chesska leans up "Can we go meet them, please? this league of thought, nyo?" she asks, this being her first true encounter with psychers not of the royal core.
Gess hmms then nods "get some rest lil one" she says and strokes Chesska's cheek as the exhausted psycher closes her eyes and flops back down.
short time later
"We'd need to transfer the diplomat's things to the Overflock ship if we leave for this league, it's thankful we know where they are at least." Gess nods in preoccupation, still concerned for her recovering sister charges "Ask the spacebats to look afterr ourr diplomat then, and see if we can get an escorrt to league space." she says and turns to face the rest of the bridge. She's answered with the clicking of keys as a neko makes a connection the earth network. Gess suddenly looks thoughtful again "Oh and we'll need to hand half ourr psycher complement overr to the overrflock ship as well, intel priorities" she says and then heads out to the sleep den to check on Chesska and the other two recovering felines.

Solar system, Ganymede
The space around Jupiter, especially its Galilean moons, was busting with activity rivalling that around Earth itself. Huge freighters bringing in the Helium-3 harvested from Jupiter to fuel the voracious appetite of the Hegemony. The huge jump gates around Io, allowing ships the more cost-effective transit to hyperspace, were busy as ever, an never-stopping stream of ships arriving and leaving. Orbital stations, artifical moons, yards, foundries... You name it, you probably find it here, too.
Despite its origins on Earth, the Hegemony had begun to shift more and more of its vital installations and facilities off-Earth. Mostly to diversify, but also because Earth has become quite crowded, especially with so many great powers struggling for influence. A current census projected that the populace of the Jupiter system would soon surpass that of the combined Earth-Lunar space of the Hegemony. Bold scientists and adventurers even begun experimenting with utilising the upper atmosphere of the swirling gas giant as living area, but large-scale applications were probably still decades away.
So, it was no surprise that it also an heavily defended space, easily more so than Earth itself. Large portions of the Heavenly Fleet was anchored at the vast installations on and around Ganymede Fleet Base.
Due to recent activities and incidents, among them the increased blustering of the NGTO, all around Ganymede and Jupiter, readiness was raised, ships warming up their drives and preparing for action, sensor sweeps increased.
Around Earth itself, the same happened, albeit on a smaller scale.

Solar System, Earth, Bejing, Ministry for Foreign Affairs
The Ministry was housed in a modest skyskraper near the ancient Forbidden Palace, a tall, thin spire of quasi-Crystal, illuminated from within by a gentle blue light.
On the 149th floor, Grand Minister Rufus Chaing-Tcherekov smiled as his guest entered his office. The ambassador to the Polish Republic smiled back. Despite the sometimes shaky relationships between Earth powers, the working relationships were excellent. He even admitted to liking the slim Pole.
"Glad you could make it," Chaing-Tcherekov greeted the ambassador and pointed to a small seating group to the left. It wasn't as lavish as other nations might have been. The Hegemony always prefered elegance and simplicity over large and lavish.
When he was seated, he offered the ambassador a coffee and took one himself. "Pjotr," he begun, "there are two things I wanted to discuss with you today." His tone grew a bit more serious. "For one, was it really necessary to blow up that ship in orbit? We know they damaged the station, but the damage a full-blown fighting in orbit could have caused..."
He took a quick gulp of coffee. "And the second, more important one: What to do with the NTGO? We are aware that there has been increased sabre-ratttling and you are leading talks. It might surprise you that we try to act non-belligerent, but we'd like to solve this issue without weapons. If it should come down to shooting, you know our stance, though."
He put down his cup and waited for the Pole to answer.

The Chamara module of the embassy station is nearly ready to go. We've got it hooked up to auxiliary generators, it has its own docking ports and life support is working. It may take months to get the rest of the station built but your section can easily support eight personnel. Give us another earth day to get it ready. The Elucidate will of course remain on station protecting the construction area.

This is good news, we were unaware that the construction process of our module had proceeded so speedily and appreciate this gesture. Now that there is no need to impose upon your ship's hospitality and we have an embassy to establish we can up our personnel detachment for this. Station systems at the current time are capable of supporting 30 people yes? we will add a few more diplomatic aides and a small service staff to our detachment from this ship. We will not be departing for more than a day regardless as we are currently exploring options for an escort to our destination, this league of thought bears more investigation.

Confirmed, life support and habitation areas are adequate for 30 humanoids, but you will be eating reheated ration packs until the catering facilities are completed. The recycling plants aren't hooked up but there should sufficient water storage capacity available. No main power, defences, shuttle bay or displacers yet, but your module has two multipurpose docking ports and its own intrasystem communications equipment.

Subject: Moving in plans
Excellent, our detachment will be prepared by at the latest 48 hours from now. food problems are not a high priority and as we are not detaching the Quintana's boat for use at the station the lack of shuttle bay will not be a problem. The full personnel complement for the embassy station and all additional equipment we require has already been dispatched from Jewel and is enroute. Gess has recently designated me as leader of the detachment, i look forward to our taking up residence in the module generously provided.

Anton stood up. and walked over to the window.
"At this point, our own sources are uncertain as to whether this whole thing was a mistake or not, but they are fairly certain that it was not an actual attack by the Heralds. Either the NGTO are reckless, or they are actively trying to create an advantageous situation for war. Either way, the Polish Republic is prepared to take the necessary steps to halt further Northerner aggression."
He sighed.
"Steps up to and including war. However, I personally think it's highly unlikely the Northerners will risk war over this little fiasco. Frankly, they don't have the numbers to take on a coalition of the willing. It's not just Earth, but a half-dozen other powers who are leery of this so-called defensive alliance."

"As for the incident in orbit, well, the President is going to address it in his speech tonight. For your personal information, we decline to accept any blame for the events in orbit. The League ship willfully and constantly showed wanton disrespect and disregard for the Polish lives and property. Their entire attitude was absurd and aggressive from the start, and they made no pretense of even caring for the lives of non-psychics. Frankly, I think they are a menace. For the moment, we accept that it may have been a mistake, and are planning an expedition to contact their government to work this out. As for the NGTO, well, I think it's likely that they will back down under pressure- but we can not let them under any circumstances invade and conquer the Herald state. The whole thing indicates that they are either blindly aggressive at best or actively planning aggression at worst."He took a quick gulp of coffee.

Nodding with her lips pursed in thought, Archon Inzeti replied, "This I do understand - our two peoples found one another in the dark once before, and parted on nervous, though peaceful terms. It appears the galaxy is growing smaller by the hour, I'm afraid. Many beings and races are coming out of the woodwork, each with their own agendas. Due to our peaceful parting before, we came to you again."Covenant wrote:"Pardon my saying so, but you have got to be making a joke. This must be the case, since of course you realize how quietly secretive our person peoples are, and how obviously apparent we would all become as a member partner in your Organization, and of course, information as to us is quite unequivocally highly confidental, not to mention secret."
She nodded gracefully. "I completely understand, and I feel honored by your words. I will wait while you confer."Covenant wrote:"It is certainly true, and somewhat correct to say, that trade is of interest in some capacity. However, and furthermore, travel between people persons of our world places does seem a bit quick and even rash to yet consider. And an alliance treaty...? While I can speak for myself, as myself, I cannot now speak only for myself and must speak for myself and my peoples too. I will need to confer with, perhaps, the First Rank of Important Persons. I myself believe, personally, that you will wish to speak to them as well."

Polish Presidential Palace
Warsaw

The hovercar that pulled up gently to the Polish Presidential Palace in Warsaw was an unassuming thing. Its design was little more than a simple, long oval with nearly-opaque damage-resistant windows. It sported no flags or insignia, and was distinguished only by the particularly handsome coat of dark blue paint coating its exterior. As the transport of High Diplomate Kel-mar-Chul, however, the vehicle was more than it appeared. The long body was suited to comfortably seat Shultakk, Gharn, and even Khurl passengers. Its pilot was a relatively low-level smart AI. It even featured an energy shield, to give it a chance to flee without damage if beset by attackers. Like many things of the Glorious Republic, the unassuming vehicle's various features were not readily available at a glance of its simple exterior.
Within the passenger compartment of the vehicle, High Diplomat Chul carefully checked that his robes were in order. A quick word with his conservatively-robed aides, a Gharn and Shultakk, confirmed that he was properly perfumed so as to avoid any unfortunate odor-related diplomatic mishaps. With these things settled, he spoke to the hovercar's AI "driver" in a brisk, business-like tone, "Send a message to this facility's reception and security to confirm our arrival, and relay their instructions to me."
The AI, of course, obeyed.

Somewhere in deep space South-West-Up of the Straltoc Borders
The Straltoc fleet burst from the other-dimensional realm that they used to get around Einstein's speed limit, and almost immediately a soft, difuse glow enveloped their ships, their shields repelling a bombardment of radiation.
"Sir! Radiation levels are-" The sensors officer begins.
"I know, but our shields can easily hold back such levels indefinitely. There is a pulsar approximately two light years from our position and we are currently sitting in the irradiated remnants of an exploded star," Admiral Aquirz says, pulling up a holographic display, showing a three dimensional map of the local area.
"Approximately one and a half million years ago this area contained a binary pair consisting of a Class B blue giant and a Class M red dwarf. The giant exploded and produced the pulsar tickling our shields. Since then the orbit of the pair has degenerated until about twenty thousand years ago when they no longer remained gravitationally linked and the pulsar swung away."
"Analysis of the red dward has led us to strongly suspect that it has at least one rocky planet in orbit, unknown whether it was present before or after the explosion. In either case, travel through the supernova remnant and exposure to the pulsar has left it inundated with heavy metals and radioisotopes on its surface. While native life is impossible beyond perhaps some bacteria deep in the crust, with the pulsar receding radiation levels will have dropped to tolerable levels in system. Historical analysis shows that pirate activity is particularly heavy in this area. It has been decided that the probability of a pirate base in system is high enough to warrant deploying this fleet. Moreso, while maintenance will be a bitch, the politicians are interested in using this system as an intermediate port for trade between us and our cousins still in Sol, especially if it is as minerally rich as we suspect."
Smiling with all four of his faces, Aquirz then says, "And if any of you are spies, now is a good time to panic as we are on full communication lock down and the radiation warrants using a transmitter sufficiently powerful to burn through the interference that it will be detected."
Settling back into his chair, Aquirz muses Now we wait for the boys and gals from the Centrality to show up

"Sir, there's a message being beamed from a ship over Africa, they're giving us permission to move troops twenty miles across their borders." the watch officer had a confused look on his face. The intelligence officer walked over and examined the message and its source, the station commander looking over his shoulder.
"Commander, I don't like the look of this, something fishy is going on. Comms, I need a secure line to central intelligence - NOW".

"And how sure are you?" the Emperor-Elect asked the Head of Central Intelligence, whose hologram floated above his desk.
"As I said, we have sources inside Africa and the TGA, in addition to sattelite feeds. I am no longer confident that the government of the TGA is in control." the head of intelligence spoke quickly and with purpose, "We're seeing movement of ground and air assets northwards, strange comms chatter, rioting in the streets. And now absurd communiques from field commanders. Sir, I think we need to step up our readyness level."
The Emperor-Elect folded his hands and though for a few moments, before responding. "I will take this information under advisement, Thank you." the figure on the hologram nodded and vanished.

Dart-like Talon class destroyers took up positions along the flanks while the terrible Manticore class cruisers took the front. At the center of the task force were the sleek Hunteresses and the Wasp. A quartet of drones flew from the carrier to scout the system.
Commodore Sean Erickson watched the drones deployed from Wasp's command center. The Archer class ship relied on weapon buses to carry her main punch, a carrier build as opposed to the Centrality's more normal gun and missile hammers. Carrier commanders were a different breed, according to navy myth. His augmentic eyes missed nothing.
"See if we can find our Straltoc friends," he said.
"Its a radiation bath out there sir," said a junior lieutenant. The commodore turned his lined and scared face towards his junior. Erickson was of the opinion that a man should bear his scars with dignity, unless they were so severe as to be disabling. This eccentricity had not stopped him from augmenting the rest of his body.
"I'm aware of that," he snapped.
"We'll find them sir. And anyone else who is out there."

"Alraszi, it might give you some confidence to note that the NGTO fleet has not moved on the Xylyx, and nor shall it unless the separate investigation reveals us to be correct, at least while one of our finest ships is flagship of that fleet. That ship, much like it's all Jotun crew, are weapons of war, and we do not commit their use lightly, knowing all too well what they are capable of."
She turned to look directly at Alraszi, looking somehow much older than just a few moments ago, though had a tired smile. At this, Archon Brea's eyebrows rose straight up. "Yes, I'd heard the same thing myself, just a few moments ago." She shook her head, looking grim. "Perhaps there's just something about the Sol system that inspires war."Academia Nut wrote:Moving back into the room, Alraszi looks about before moving over to Archon Brea and saying, "Ah, Archon, I apologize for my absence, I was notified of several breaking news items that demanded my full attention.
At this, the Golden Sky Combine Archon gave Alraszi a rueful smile. "I wish I could say hearing such news gave me surprise, but that's why I am here."Academia Nut wrote:"This leaves my people in between several rocks and hard places.
She walked closer to the railing of the palace, looking upon the splendor of the beautiful world. Archon Brea looked thoughtful for a moment before answering. "I last saw them earlier at the party, though not since. I suspect the wiggle grass may have affected them somewhat adversely."Academia Nut wrote:"All that said, we also have some treaties with the Grand Republic of the Sky Bear that we must look carefully at.
