That could be anything, and even assuming, for some reason, that it is character portraits, there is no way to count them. Besides, if they wanted to hide the characters, they wouldn't blur them like that, they would just crop them out...

The website says that "The character select screen is still a secret!" immediately below that picture, so the immediate assumprion by most was that the blurred image was part of the character select screen, but it's entirely possible that was thrown in to feed speculation, I suppose.

Also, Giga Bowser is very, very big. He takes up the entire upper platform of the Yoshi's Island stage.

Yeah, it looks more like floating background words.

I thought it was pixelation, but people seem to think each block is a separate character. I highly doubt it.

Now that I think about it, you would think that Jigglypuff's down B move would work on Giga Bowser just like it did in Melee.

It's his Final Smash, he'll doubtless be invincible.

There’s a variety of attacks in Smash Bros., and they all involve some combination of strength and direction. Let me start here by talking about strength.

Standard Attack

If you just press the attack button, you’ll perform a standard attack. These are generally speedy.

Strong Attack

screenshot

When you tilt the stick in a particular direction, you’ll do a stronger attack in that direction. These attacks usually have longer reach.

Smash Attack

screenshot

Now, if you simultaneously tilt the stick and press the button, you’ll do a smash attack. These are powerful!

Since the name for smash attacks is derived from the game’s name, you can assume they’re pretty important.

Swiftly tilt the Control Stick left, right, up or down, and simultaneously attack! When you link the feeling of this control with the result of sending an opponent flying, I think you’ll start to see the crux of this game.

At first, don’t overthink things. It’s OK to just tilt the stick and bash some buttons. Ease yourself into it.

By pressing and holding the attack button during a smash attack, you can build up power. Power up and unleash it when the time is right!
We also get to see how its done on the diffrent controls. :)

I must say, the way they're doing smash with the solo remote is interesting, since now you'll have total control over when you smash and when you don't.

I'll probably end up playing with the nun-chuck, it can't be that hard to get used to.

Update tonight is a new stage, the Bridge of Eldin, from Twilight Princess. It is, and I wish I were making this up, a perfectly flat stage that runs from one end to the other.
This area appeared in the Wii game The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. If you’ve played that title, you ought to remember this place.

Image

The terrain is flat. I mean, really flat.

And the enemy leader, King Bulblin, makes cameo appearances. Occasionally, he uses bombs to blast holes in the stage.

Image

Run! It’s King Bulblin and Lord Bullbo!

Image

Uh-oh! There’s a hole...

But don’t worry. The missing chunk will be magically transported via portal to fill in the gap.

Image

Whoa! Just like the original game!
It doesn't look very interesting at all. I've said it before in the thread, and this only increases my worry that the stages in Brawl seem to be mishandled so far. I hope, and the SSB team has not yet let me down, that it will be as impressive as its predecessor when I'm playing in November/whatever.

That being said, the first screenshot is gorgeous.

NOTE: I tried to get all of the images onto one for convenience's sake, is that a problem?

So far they're all really flat... I thought we'd be getting more movement?

I want to get to know more about the Fire Emblem and Kid Icarus stages: of the ones that we've seen, they seem the most interesting.

I find it interesting that you can blow holes in the middle of the bridge. Might put a twist to a completely flat stage.

I'm hoping we get a better ratio of "plain" stages to "wacky" stages. I'd rather not play Final Destination every other round just because one or more people in the group keep requesting it.

There better be something analogous to Poke Floats and Rainbow Cruise this time around, too.

And, finally, I want something similar to Hyrule Castle from the original SSB. Nothing in SSBM had that perfect balance of mixed terrain and size.

Hell, I'd be content if they just brought all the good stages from SSB and Melee over to Brawl. Then, even if we end up just getting 30 variations of Battlefield and Final Destination for new stages, the game won't be worse than Melee.

I'd like to think that they're revealing the boring, "competitive-friendly" levels now, and saving the good ones like MGS, FE, and KI until later.

Also, I hope Poke Floats makes a reprise. That level just felt so epic.

EDIT: Also, wouldn't it be awesome if the Game Boy Camera made an appearance in this game? Sorry for the random, it just occurred to me out of nowhere an hour ago.

Yes. Kraid's stage was fun.

Update:
Up until now, standard combos, or button-press combos, were done primarily by tapping the attack button repeatedly.

That won’t change in Brawl, but now you can also just hold down the attack button to automatically do consecutive standard attacks.

It will vary a bit depending on the character, of course, but in the case of Fox...

screenshot

Press and hold the attack button to do consecutive jabs.

screenshot

Press the button repeatedly, or just start hitting your enemy to initiate the combo.

screenshot

You’ll see a smooth transition into his Rapid Kick!

The game will be compatible with a variety of controllers, so I’ve gone a tad easier on the button pressing.

Of course, each character will have variations. While some may do repeated rapid jabs, others may simply do three slow swipes with a blade.

Meta Knight is somewhat unique. His standard attack is an unbelievably rapid sequence of slices. Just press and hold the button to unleash a rampage.

screenshot

Hee ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya!

This guy needs to calm down.

Dr. Wright

What? You mean THAT Dr. Wright? The one from the SNES version of SimCity? Well, I guess Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the kind of game where anyone can show up and anything can happen!

screenshot

"Hold on a second! What are you guys doing here?!"

screenshot

"Starting today, you’re the mayor!"

screenshot

Suddenly a skyscraper pops up out of nowhere!

The fighters are completely blown away by the skyscraper that just shot up underneath them.

Awesome. Now THAT’S what I call city-building.

Given how chummy Will Wright has been with Nintendo over the years, this isn't necessarily so surprising when you think about it, but it's certainly a unique pick for a character.

That skyscraper attack seems to have some serious area control going on there.
