A WH:40k Space Marine questions

Post by Lord Revan »

  1. How would a space marine force react to getting help/reinforsment from another Chapter (assuming that the chapters in question weren't openly hostile with each other (like Space Wolves and Dark Angels for example))?
  2. How would a space marine force react to a squad of Grey Knights (either "normal" Battle-Brothers or Terminators) arriving and saying they were sent there by the Chapter Master/inquisition/or what ever to help said marine force?
  3. how would a IG force react to the same situation?

Hard to say about the other Chapters. I'd guess it probably depends on the situation and the Chapter. Some chapters DO collaborate after a fashion big battles (Armageddon comes to mind), and even the Dark Angels and Space Wolves fought together against a common enemy (Sons of Fenris.) But I suspect that they won't actually team up unless the situation is REALLY dire, at most they'll probably participate independently in the same battle. Space Marines can be very dutiful and honorable, but they're also extremely proud whem it comes to their Chapter and its glory/proewss - and few things tend to override that.

Grey Knights... as far as I know, the Grey Knights aren't well known to the Imperium at Large, even including many Space Marine chapters. If the Chapter somehow knows of them, then they probably would welcome them, because Grey Knights are so frigging badass (and it probably means that there's some big bad daemon around that would chew up regular Space Marines rather easily.) Again they may not like it, ,but they can do it.

The IG it again depends. THE common soldiers are pretty much people who grow up on stories of how badass and gerat Space MArines are. That sort of propoganda tends to cause them to literally shit themselves with awe and honor and pride and whatnot. This can be a good thing insofar as morale goes. If SM's re around Guardsman are likely to fight alot better.

Officers (especially higher up ones like Generals) tend to have mixed opinions, and I suspect this largely depends on the Chapter. Space MArines are super-soldier badasses who can take on overwhelming odds and do things that most Guardsman can't do without casualties, but they're also essentially an independent command.

What's more, there are some Space Marines (IE Dark Angels) who are basically dicks and put their own interests and honour above the interests of other people at large. Some Generals are aware of this, and it tends to make them leery (what good is it to have superhero baddasses if they might randomly run off on some private agenda when you most need them and least expect it?)

Some officers also tend to (rightly) view Spacec marines as psychos with guns and axes, and express disbelief at their preference for Melee combat. Such officers tend not to view them as "real" soldiers (Like General Xarius in Crimson Tears... heh heh...)

Well the situation I had in mind would that SM force was for some reason or another overwhelmed by the enemy and get reinforced to win the battle but those are reinforsment aren't from the same chapter.

as asking about the Grey Knights, was because as you said their mere presence means that there's some really nasty stuff coming your way (normally some really nasty deamons)

Most people, including commanders, wouldn't know what a Grey Knight is...

If they knew who the Grey Knights were I think they'd be both relieved (as Grey Knights open up a six pack of whupass on stuff) and worried (as Grey Knights means there's deamons about), well as worried as a space marine can be.
Since most don't know what a grey knight is I'd go mostly for worried because the grey knights will probably explain why they are there (Deamons).

Imperial Guard would be happy (as they're space marines, and guard seem to worship marines) and I'm guessing the Knights would keep quiet about the deamons around the guard.

And you have to wonder how some of them would react if they found out.

The GK's killed Mortifactor Chaplains to "recruit" Brother-Captain Stern.

Situation 1:

Marines would probably be a little bitchy to be honest, they don't particularly like any inference they can't handle whats going on. The worse the situation is, and the more rational the Chapter, the more likely they are to accept help, its a simple as that.

2

If a bunch of Grey Knights turned up out of the blue, it'd really depend on whether or not the Marines had a fucking clue who they were. The presence of Inquisitorial Mandate would smooth things over, but being an "unknown" chapter is likely to create problems, its unlikely they will be totally unaware of who is operating in their area.

3:

Rank and file would be dead impressed, motivated and happy, although some might question is it so bad that they need the Supersoldiers?

Command ranks would be gradually less and less thrilled about it, again heavily dependant on who turns up, what the actual situation is etc. If a bunch of Flesh Tearers turned up for a relatively small pacification I imagine even the most aggressive Guard Commander might have second thoughts after he'd spoken with them! Whereas Ultramarines, Space Wolves etc would be very welcome regardless of the situation.
